TiVo Alert!

Sunday night, Maya and I stayed up past our bedtime watching a new show on the Discovery Channel, Planet Earth.  Planet Earth is an 11 part mini-series that took 5 years to make, and utilizes a lot of cutting edge video technology.  If you’re an early adapter, and have High Definition TV, this show will probably make you glad you spent the money. It’s beautifully filmed.  So far, we’ve only watched the first episode, Pole to Pole, which discusses the different environments of the world.  Think of it as an introductory chapter of an essay, with more depth to be added in later installments.   We did get tired of hearing Sigourney Weaver say, “Never before filmed” and “With our new technology” and other self-congratulatory things like that.  But they’ve done an amazing job, so I guess it’s OK if they want to toot their own horns a little bit.

If you missed it on Sunday, my local newspaper TV guide says it will be on again this coming Thursday, but the Discovery Channel website says no.  It is also playing on The Science Channel, on Saturday the 31st.  Or, you could just cave to pressure, and buy it on DVD (available next month).  And, just to confuse you if you should decide to make the purchase, on Amazon.com, the DVD says it is starring Signourney Weaver, and then in the details, that it is narrated by Sir. David Attenborough, who narrated the British release.  Either way, I’m sure it’s great. Also, there’s the HDTV version, and the regular version. What to do?  For now, we’re just using our old fashioned VCR.

Weird. When I came into work this morning the Science Channel was on, that show was on and they had some amazing footage of avalanches. Did you hear that the Rockies have 100,000 avalanches a year? Unreal.

We’ve watched the first three episodes so far. The footage is really incredible, but I too grew tired of Sigourney saying that. haha The footage of the great white shark eating the seal, while sad, was just amazing. I can’t wait for the rest.

I told my HD-owning friend to invite me over to watch the series. Hope she doesn’t mind me being in her house every Sunday night until June. I can make her dinner in return for her technological provisions.

I finally found a night to start watching the series, and WOW, did you see the part with the great white shark jumping out of the water to catch the seal? I must have rewound that four times and I could barely breathe each time.
Their camera work is just breathtaking. I can’t wait to watch all of them!
