How to Use Your Apostrophe Correctly
(Photo found here.) OK, time for another grammar lesson kids. I know, it probably bugs the crap out of you when I do these posts, but it’s not often, so suck it up. Here’s the gist of it: I’m tired of seeing apostrophes used for plurals! Tired of it, I tell you! But I haven’t said much about it, except that I suspect that plurals don’t appreciate being used as possessives. It occurs to me that perhaps, some readers might make good use of more information. So, here goes. The correct uses of an apostrophe are: 1. To indicate the possessive form of a noun. For example, “Genevieve’s new bed…

Double Meme Monday
Because it’s St. Patrick’s Day, so green is the “IT” color of the day, and because I saw this over at Beenzzz’s place, and couldn’t resist. Even if I am boring and reliable. I do like olive green, though. 😉 You Are Olive Green You are the most real of all the green shades. You’re always true to yourself. For you, authenticity and honesty are very important… both in others and yourself. You are grounded and secure. It takes a lot to shake you. People see you as dependable, probably the most dependable person they know. What Color Green Are You?

Ode to Wednesday
One of the things I like about Maya’s middle school is Wednesday mornings. In her elementary school, she used to get out of school at 1:00 on Wednesday afternoons, which was nice, but now instead of getting out early, they start late. So, one day a week, we get to have a slower start to her day. Maya sleeps in (and sometimes, like today, I do too). Often we have time to sit down and eat breakfast together, as opposed to her eating eggo waffles while we walk to school (don’t worry, no messy syrup). The morning just doesn’t have that same rushed feeling as the rest of the week…

Stress
Through this ordeal thus far, I’ve received some very good advice…to care for myself, to keep good thoughts so my body can stay strong, to take time for myself, to be kind to myself, etc. And I’ve been trying. The hotel has a gym; I belong to an online yoga studio; there are paths to be found around here that aren’t too icy, so I can take a walk when it isn’t too cold. So I’ve been exercising every day. The hotel has a large kitchen that families can use, and my room has a fridge and a microwave, so I’m not stuck eating in the hospital cafeteria. I’m eating…

Good News/Bad News
Short update before we run out for a bit…good news is that the angiogram was tolerated and she came through it fine. Bad news is that she needs bypass surgery, perhaps as soon as Friday. Looks like I’ll be in Alaska longer than I had thought…

I’m in Anchorage
Hi All, Haven’t been in Alaska in 10 years, and this is my first time in Anchorage. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be sightseeing or visiting much, as I’m here because my mom has been transferred here from Juneau, and is in the hospital. Looks like heart problems, which may result in angioplasty, serious meds, or a bypass, depending on tests that they will be doing on Wednesday. So for now, we wait in the hospital. Fun. To my local friends, esp Cherry and Dot, I feel crummy for not calling you and telling you that I was leaving town, hopefully to be back on Saturday, but not sure…but I…

TGIF
Not only is it Friday, it’s a three day weekend! Yay! I’m kinda thinking I could use a long weekend right about now. Seems like I’ve been busy busy busy lately. Last weekend, Maya and I attended a girls seminar held by Soroptomist International. Maya took classes in Self Defense, Yoga, and Etiquette, and I took classes in Talking to your teen-aged daughter, and helping your teen to succeed. Maya liked her classes, except the one on etiquette, which she didn’t like at all. But the classes that she might have been more interested in were full, so that’s what she got. But she did learn a few self defense…

The Secret Family of Jesus
(I couldn’t find a video of the right program, but this is very similar, and the same host.) We ended up watching part of this show on PBS the other night, The Secret Family of Jesus. We came in late and left early, so I will not pretend that anything I write here is correct or true. It’s all about the family of Jesus, and what information about his family made it into the Bible, and what did not. Discussions about how at that famous wedding where he turned water into wine, he was probably at a family wedding, that kind of thing. Then the idea was floated that…

My Fairbanks Life
I recently found a new bloggy friend, Theresa from My Fairbanks Life. I found her through Michelle at Scribbit. They’re both Alaskan bloggers. Michelle lives in Anchorage, and Theresa lives in Fairbanks, which is where I spent 5 years as a child. Hearing about the cold snap they’re having right now (I just checked yahoo weather, and they’re saying it’s -43 F right now) put me in mind of some of my own memories of Fairbanks, and the time that I spent there. I had intended to do this as a Thursday 13, but didn’t get to it until late. So it’s a Friday 13 I guess. Anyway, without further…

Wraggle Taggle Gypsies O!
(artwork by Tracy Butler, found here) We were talking the other day about music in schools, remembering when Maya used to sing every day in class, and how much she liked it, and then how that…ended…when she got to 1st grade. They still had music, but it was a music teacher who came once or twice a week, rather than the class singing songs together. I was reminded of the 4th grade, back in 1976 (I remember because it was an election year, very controversial among the 4th graders), when we had Mrs. Katz, the music teacher, who would come to our class once or twice a week with her…

Home Alone
There was a time, years ago, when I was practically never home alone. Ted was working on his dissertation, Maya was in pre-school, and I was working across the street from her school. I would get up and go to work in the morning, leaving Ted with Maya. He would get her up and ready for school, and I would pick her up in the afternoon. If I were home, either Ted or Maya were also here, usually both of them. I remember once in awhile, envying Ted his quiet time at home, time alone to spend however he chose, though of course that wasn’t the reality of it…he was…

Proof that Maya is Smart
While we don’t believe in paying our child for getting good grades, we have been known to celebrate our successes in life. So when Maya came home on Friday with a report card that showed how hard she’s been working, Ted said we would celebrate, and she could pick what we have for dinner. Anywhere she wanted to go, or we could cook at home. Being an intelligent child, as it is the height of Dungeness Crab season, she said she wanted crab, at home. Yay! It just so happens that I had been eyeballing the crab at a local grocery a day or two before, and had decided that…

It’s Probably A Good Thing…
It’s probably a good thing that we have given up selling our little condo, because it looks like we live in a construction zone right about now. Some of what is going on is improvements, and some of it is repair type work, and some is just plain mud and mess due to rain, but gosh, if I were a prospective buyer, I wouldn’t even walk through the front door. Heck, even the front door is a mess. We live in a condo complex that is almost 30 years old, and the exterior is shingles, for that lovely ‘Tahoe look”, as they call it. 30 year old shingles start to…

The Rocky LaPorte Show
(Update…look, through the miracle of YouTube, you can enjoy the first segment of this sitcom…you could then go back and watch more, if you want…I don’t know WHY you would want that, but hey, whatever floats your boat!) I answered the phone the other day, and the kind person on the other side of the line asked me if I would be interested in watching a 1/2 hour sitcom if they sent me a DVD, and then they would call me back and ask me questions about it. Cool, huh? And, to thank me for my time, I would be entered into a drawing to win $100 worth of valuable…

What a Challenge
The beautiful C has tagged me for a challenge that I have been mulling over for a few weeks now…The Think Different Challenge. Here are the rules, cribbed from C’s post: The Think Different Challenge is all about finding something in your life you currently have negative thoughts or feelings toward (eg work or your mother-in-law), and deciding to look at it differently. It is about realizing that some things are just a part of life, so we may as well try to find the positives in them. The rules for this writing project are: Write a new blog post in which you “think differentâ€. Follow my suggestions above, or…
