Current Situation

Today is my Fabulous Friday, which was supposed to be spent with my friend Neva, trying out a new pasta place downtown, drinking some wine, walking and talking and catching up. Then Ted started feeling poorly, and took a COVID test on Wednesday. You can tell by my tone that he tested positive. Sigh. Neva’s son is high risk for lung issues, and has been hospitalized a couple of times with COVID, and we are trying to avoid that happening again. So we have postponed, we’ll get together in a few weeks instead.

At times like these, I wish we had a guest bedroom. As it is, Ted is wearing his mask in the house whenever Maya or I are in the room with him. He’s sleeping on the sofa. Maya is working from home. So far, Maya and I feel fine and are still testing negative. Ted felt blah on Wednesday, more crummy yesterday (fever, chills, coughing), and today was feeling well enough to go on a socially distanced walk with Mulder and me. We are going from a pretty busy weekend to a pretty quiet one. I was getting together with Neva, Ted was going to get together with some coworkers, Maya was going to get together with some friends. We were all supposed to go to a party on Sunday. Sigh.

So, instead of getting together with Neva, I did our taxes today. (Thanks Stephany, for reminding me about taxes…just by posting that you had done yours already.) I was sure we were going to owe, with Ted’s new job and the fact that my withholding was off for a couple of paychecks when my company switched providers, but we are breaking even, even with the fees to TurboTax. So YAY!

Back to COVID talk. I was thinking that if Neva didn’t have a high risk son, I might have gotten together with her anyway, since I am without any symptoms and testing negative. I felt like if Maya still wanted to get together with her friends, she could do so, as long as everyone was OK with that. (She’s going to have a zoom get-together with them instead, very 2020) Of course we wouldn’t get together with anyone who is high risk, we would wear masks in public (as we always do), and we would make sure everyone involved was OK with it. How about you? If someone besides you in your household tested positive for COVID, at this stage when there are vaccines and treatments, would you cancel everything? Or perhaps go out anyway, and just be cautious?

I would probably go out and be cautious if it were outside, but not an indoor venue. I wear good quality masks; even so, I would feel terribly guilty if I passed it on to anyone. (especially someone with medical conditions) Hope Ted feels better soon and that Maya and you don’t catch the Covid!

Margaret, exactly, we don’t want to pass anything on to anyone. All of this has me questioning so many practices, like candles on our birthday cake. Really? Someone blows their cooties all over a cake and then we eat it? Probably not a great idea.

    Ugh. Covid. I’m sorry.
I’d cancel plans, just as you did. I would never want to be responsible for giving anyone Covid. The risk for Long Covid is what I’d be concerned about the most.

I hope Ted recovers soon and keeps it all to himself. Hang in there!

(And thanks for the reminder about taxes. I just mentioned ours to Rick.)

We also do not have a guest room, and when my younger son tested positive for Covid back in March 2022, I just kind of shrugged. I thought we had all been exposed a lot prior to his positive test so we didn’t isolate him or anything like that. We all had it, but we were pretty mild. I did and would cancel everything if someone in my house had Covid just because we have a small house and I would figure I was a disease vector, but also because the classes I teach are filled with seniors, so I wouldn’t want to, you know, accidentally kill them! Or make them ill.
Anyway, too bad about the diagnosis, and I hope you and your daughter manage to dodge it! Hope your husband is feeling better.

I’d stay home and reschedule. I would feel awful if I inadvertently got someone sick, not knowing that I had the virus & was passing it on. I’m cautious when it comes to most things.

Too bad that this had to happen on a weekend when you had plans. Hopefully he’s better and you won’t get it.

I would definitely cancel in person plans if someone in the house was sick, unless it was a special situation and the other person was willing to risk it. You just never know. Otherwise we’re out and about like it’s 2019.

Ugh, I am so sorry that Ted tested positive again. I heard from a few people recently that they’ve gotten infected again. I think I would try to isolate as much as possible, but we also don’t have a guest bedroom, so it would be almost impossible to completely isolate. I hope you and Maya don’t get it and that Ted is on the mend.

    Ugh. I am so sorry!

The guidelines where we live are: stay home until you are symptom-free, but everyone else in the household can continue on with regular routines. This is such a HUGE shift from just a year ago when it was a full lockdown for everything. We do have a guest room in our basement. My husband was recently sick at the end of a work trip and spent DAYS isolated in the basement. It has a very old bathroom and shower but it’s perfect for isolating.

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear this! I think if someone in our household tested positive, we would all hole up in the house. I hope Ted is back to normal soon and that the rest of you remain normal.

Well, Ted’s efforts to not pass it on have proven ineffective. I have tested positive this morning. Mostly I feel fine, a little run down, a little gloppy in my throat. Still trying to keep from passing it on to Maya. Time will tell.

If someone in my house tested positive I would probably go on as normal as long as I felt ok. My husband and I had Covid at different times and never did distancing or masks and didn’t catch it off each other. Don’t know how that works… we were sleeping in the same bed. When my daughter had it she coughed in my face lots and I still didn’t get it then. But there are pretty clear rules here about Covid and if you have Covid you should stay at home or at least outdoors or wear masks if your have to go indoors. If you live with someone who has Covid you still have to go to work etc. as long as you feel ok.

I hope ted feels okay soon!

Ugh, covid. The gift that keeps on giving. I see from your comment above that you have since tested positive. I hope that your case is mild!

We do have a guest bedroom so I slept in it for several nights when I had covid in May of 2022. But since our kids are young, the parent that sleeps upstairs really carries the load since they deal with night wakings and get woken by the kids in the morning. I think I slept downstairs for 4 nights, though. My husband somehow did not get covid even though the boys and I did and we didn’t have the boys mask when they tested positive since they are so young.

If someone in our house tested positive, I would probably cancel any social plans. I can technically still go into the office, though. But if someone tested positive, I’d assume I will get it because of my suppressed immune system.

Hi Lisa, my daughter had COVID last year too, and she worked from home and sat right next to me, and I didn’t get it. Or else I did and was asymptomatic. Who knows.
