Musings

  • Dang

Thanks everyone, for your wishes and crossed fingers.  Didn’t get the job. Sigh.

  • Since You Asked…

The interview went…so-so. I did my best, I tried my best to convey my passion for this job, for the idea of it all. I think they heard me. But in the end it’s a sales job, and I don’t know sales. I have zero experience in it. But I think I could do it, and do it well, if I believe in the product, which in this case I very much do. We’ll see if they value enthusiasm over experience, or not. Word comes early next week. Sigh. (I used to read Cary Tennis’ column, Since You Asked, in Salon.  Loved it.  I think I should get back to…

  • Happy Friday!

Who likes to rock the party?  I like to rock the party! OK, I’m a bit giddy right now because I just had a rockin’ good interview for a job that I REALLY want.  At one point, I told the recruiter that she was making me drool, that’s how much I like the idea of this job.  And you know what?  It’s nothing I would have ever seen myself doing before, nothing I had ever thought about, and I have no real-life experience in it.  So what?  I’m totally qualified for the job, and I would go out and make it my OWN.  I’m excited by the idea of…

  • Sooner or Later, it starts to look like real money…

(picture found here) I heard an interesting podcast the other day on Planet Money, where a school teacher gave the broadcasters an idea on how to get your head around huge numbers.  Really huge numbers, like billions and trillions.  It’s true, it’s sometimes difficult to get our heads around how big really big numbers are.  So I started thinking about when money starts getting confusing for me, ignoring the tens and hundreds and going straight for the thousands.  For example, if I have $1, that’s easy to get my head around.  I would have no problem spending $1.  That’s not even enough to pay for a diet coke at 7-11.…

  • The Other End (Of the Telescope)

Where does our responsibility as bloggers sit, with regards to one another?  Is it enough to be polite, to not insult or slam those whose blogs we visit?  Should we be honest above all else?  If a blogger that we like starts another venture, be it an online magazine or an etsy shop, or a real, brick and mortar store, should we support them in their endeavors, with clicks or cash or both?  Are we obliged to support them by putting a link to their other endeavors on our sidebar, if that will help them?  Does it depend on how well we feel we know them?  On if we feel…

  • Mom Yoga

I have two mothers who are yoga teachers. My mother-in-law right here in town, and my step-mother in Portland. I used to joke that Maya would be confused by my mom, her only Grandma who didn’t take or teach yoga. Since I’ve been unemployed, my mother-in-law (“Ma”) has invited me to attend her yoga classes for free (the perfect price for the unemployed…thanks, Ma!). I aim for twice a week, but of course life sometimes gets in the way. Since losing my mom last June, yoga classes sometimes get me crying. Something about slowing down and spending time focused on my body seems to send my thoughts that way, and…

  • Friday Already?

Hard to believe it’s Friday already.  This week sure sped by, didn’t it?   So. Grandma’s feeling a bit better, though not at all happy about going into assisted living, no matter how temporarily.  The silver lining to this whole thing is that she realizes that this might involve some money on her part, and so is cutting off my blood-sucking vampire of a cousin, who has been milking her and my Great Aunt dry for years.  Lining your pockets at the expense of old women on a severely limited income is tantamount to elder abuse in some circles, so this cutting off is very much welcomed by our entire family. …

  • J’s Grandma

Sorry for the little hiatus there.  My Grandma fell on Monday and broke her leg.  Doesn’t sound like a big deal, and it probably wouldn’t be in someone young.  But she’s 86, and her bones are so brittle, the doctor described them as eggshells.  He also described some of the risks of surgery on someone of her age, which scared us all a bit, and had my grandma making lists of what piece of jewelry she wants to go to go to which granddaughter, if she should die. Tuesday, she had surgery.  They put in a titanium plate, so she’s got titanium from hip to knee.  The surgeon said it…

  • Most Awesomely Yummy Cookies

Imagine my surprise when I came home yesterday to find a box of yummy cookie goodness on my doorstep!  I opened it up and found a delicious package of cookies and a sweet note from my pdx bloggy pal, BMC, aka Bite My Cookie.  Maya was generous enough to model for me, both the anticipation of pre-bite into some chocolate chip gooey heaven, but also an action shot of an actual bite.  Notice the very cute new top she bought herself with a gift card from Auntie Janet, as well as the fierce pink streak in her stylish new hairdo! The cookies were pretty big, and mighty rich and buttery,…

  • New Budget

(money photo found at Gourmet Gal) The first few weeks that I was out of work, I didn’t really change my spending habits much.  I had my final paycheck, complete with over 100 hours of PTO.  I had my severance, puny though it was.  I won’t say I was in total denial, but I was in partial denial.  I bought some clothes, thinking that I will need them when I start working.  Having worked from home for several years has put me in a bad situation in that department.  I stopped at the grocery store whenever we needed anything, and as often as not, I ended up leaving with a…

  • Walking Away

I keep hearing about people who are underwater on their loans, and who might walk away from their homes in order to save money.   I just read this on Yahoo, where four people who are underwater discussed their decisions to stay or not stay in their homes.  It seems a bit disingenuous to me, becuase of the four people they interviewed, they found two who would not walk away from their homes, and two who are considering it, but they didn’t interview anyone who is definitely planning it.  There must be some folks out there who are walking away from their mortgages, so why didn’t they get some of them?…

  • Road Trip Weekend

(front row: Liz, Tracy, and Cherry; back row, me and Dorothy) One upside of blogging is the wonderful people that you meet, and how they can go from being just comments on your blog to being people that you genuinely care about, and sometimes, people that you get to meet in person.  Cherry, Liz, Dot, and I were friends before we started blogging.  We used to work together in a previous life, and happily, we’ve stayed friends all these years later. We’ve made friends with Tracy and Gina through blogging, and we’ve been fortunate enough to meet them in person.  Cherry and I went to Tracy’s wedding shower, and Cherry…

  • Happy Birthday, LaLuna!

Happy Birthday to a wonderful Sister-In-Law, La Luna!  I hope all your birthday wishes come true. (The recording is from when the Beatles were on a BBC show called “Saturday Club”, which is who they’re singing Happy Birthday to.  In case you’re trying to figure that one out.)

  • Meme Monday

Because I’ve got nothing else this morning, and still I want to post something. Maya got a super cute haircut over the weekend, but she won’t let me take a picture for the blog. I finished my book last night, but don’t have time to write up a review right now. I’m going to go observe small claims court later this morning, as our homeowners association is being sued, and it seems like it might be kinda fun and interesting to watch. So, for now, you get a meme that I took from my Facebook & real life friend, Connie: 43 Things about me!* 1. Do you like blue cheese?…

  • The Album Cover Project

Do you Facebook?  I Facebook.  Through Facebook, I’ve reconnected with some old high school friends (wait, that didn’t come out right…they’re not old…or wait, maybe we’re all old, I’m not sure.)  Anyway, I’ve reconnected with some great guys that I knew in another lifetime, back when I was still trying to figure out who I was, and I was mostly shy and awkward and so on, and they were mostly friends of my brother, but let me hang around anyway.  One of these guys is Darin, who actually left High School before I started, so I didn’t know him quite as well as the others, but he is a great…
