Six Things Saturday

I didn’t get to a Friday Randomness this week. Usually I write my posts throughout the week, and publish early on Friday (at 4:23, my mom’s birthday), but I didn’t get to it, and I didn’t even write this post on Friday in time for an early Saturday post. C’est la vie, I’m going to post in real time.

1 – Cats
Let’s start with some very good news…kitty Anastasia was adopted last weekend! That made me so, so happy. The staff talked to the family who adopted her, told her that she would need her own space, need time to come out of her shell, and they seemed like they really wanted to give her her best life. <3 Now there are two little kittens.

Aren’t they adorable? They’re both very shy. The dark one ran away when I opened the door. The orange one stuck its ground, but hissed and seemed totally overwhelmed. When I wasn’t terrorizing them by giving them food and water and cleaning their litter box, they were playing with each other and being frikkin’ adorable. They are scared though, and have pooped up their beds pretty much every day, stinking up the place.

2 – Voting
You may have heard about our primary process for Governor this year. This is my ballot, which has 61 options. Ridiculous. I’ve been trying to decide between a couple of the front runners, but have been waffling. I’m 90% there, will likely vote tomorrow or the next day.

3 – Shopping Fun
Last week I wandered over to our local feed store to see if they had any water plants I could put in my new little backyard fountain. I love this store. You can buy a mask to keep the flies off of your horse’s face.

You can buy baby chicks if you want to have chickens and your own eggs.

You can buy goldfish for a koi pond.

You can buy Breyer horses, which are a lot more expensive than when I was a kid. Man, I loved my Breyer horses.

They have a claw grabby machine for dog toys. FUN. I found some plants and set up my fountain.

Here’s my little fountain. I’m not convinced that water lettuce was the way to go, perhaps it would look nicer with a taller plant. I’m not sure. Also, I clearly need to rake up the dead leaves on the ground. It’s so dry here, which is normal for this time of year, but I miss the late winter when everything is green.

Here’s a nearby trail, which is on the way to the feed store. Not completely dried out, there’s still a bit of green in the grass, but we’re getting there.

4 – LFL
Here’s Ted showing off our good work organizing the Little Free Library. The books look so organized and appealing, right?

5 – Breakfast for Dinner
We had breakfast for dinner twice this week. One night was pancakes, another was omelets. Here we have eggs, bread for toast, white cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese, avocado, bacon, green onions, yellow bell pepper, yellow tomatoes, and chives. Plus some fruit salad for the side. They were very tasty.

6 – Trying to conquer the clutter, with so-so results
We have old cabinets, with pressed wood, and we have a lot of pots and pans and lids. The cabinet where we keep them is kind of a disaster. So I decided to give this product a try. The good news: It does hold several of our pans and lids. The bad news: It’s such a cramped space, you have to twist the lids to get them off the rack, because there isn’t room to lift them up straight. I feel like Obama – Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. It’s not perfect, far from it, but it’s better.

I hope you’re having a good weekend so far. Do you like breakfast for dinner? Are your kitchen cabinets a disaster?

Those two kittens are adorable, but they look petrified. Hopefully, with a bit of love, they’ll come around. I do not understand the US voting system, but that ballot is ridiculous. You don’t have to number every box, do you? It reminds me of our most recent council elections with 23 people on our ballot (the largest number of council candidates in the state). We did have to number every box in order of preference. I read all their blurbs, but there was a distinct sameness about most of them. I wonder whether they just got ChatGPT to write them.

You’re right, those kittens are terrified. Hopefully they will adjust and begin to feel safe.

No, thankfully, we only have to pick one person, not rank them. I can’t imagine. Usually it’s only 2 or 3, maybe 5 candidates. This time is insane.

Oh my – I have not opened my mail-in ballot yet and had no idea the volume of candidates in the race. Guess I’ve only been focused on those that made the debates. :0 Way too many on that ballot!

  • Daria

    Kittens!!!!!!!
We have a new kitchen but the pots and pants drawer is a disaster. We lay them flat but it makes absolutely no difference.

    • J

I’m not sure whether that makes me happy or sad! I guess there’s no hope is what I’m hearing. Or I need to get rid of a bunch. I could do with fewer, but there are times when I want a specific pan for a specific job, so it’s difficult.

Oh, those kittens. They remind me of Piper and Marlowe when I first adopted them. I’ll bet the orange one goes first if they’re not adopted together. Orange cats are awesome.

We used to have breakfast for dinner often. In the fall/winter it was pancakes. In the spring/summer, frittatas. Now I can’t seem to stomach eggs very well, so the frittatas are out at present. I’d like to try again, though. Pancakes feel too heavy for me sometimes, even without syrup but fresh fruit instead. I know Rick misses both.

I wish our Little Frees had the triple shelving. Ours just have one shelf, and it’s hard to keep it looking neat. Some larger books have to lie down, and that makes everything else prone to being messy. I do what I can.

Water lettuces reproduce alarmingly fast. You’d probably have been fine with just one, but you can always put the extras in another water container. The birds will be happy.

I used to say that pancakes made me feel stupid. Like I wanted to just go into a coma after eating them. I don’t presently have that problem, thankfully. Oh, frittatas are a good idea…maybe I should look into making that for dinner, with a nice salad. Hmmm. I’ll bet I could make it work.

Uh oh on the water lettuce. I may end up giving them away on buy nothing if they propagate too quickly. I don’t want a lot of standing water around.

    • J

I think it’s especially helpful for the lids, though we honestly don’t use them often and they don’t come out of the holder easily. Still, for now at least, better than it was.

I want that omelette! I love breakfast for dinner although that usually involves eggs. In fact, I had a cheese omelette for dinner last night–much more boring than yours. Your photos of kittens makes me want another cat. (sorry, Mari!) That ballot is crazy! I hope the number of candidates doesn’t hurt the Dems. Right now, we can’t afford that. 🙁

California has a weird primary system where the top two, no matter the party, go on to the general election. So if the number of candidates divides the vote too much and we get two republicans on the ballot, that will not be good. The good news is that I think the vote will be divided by the top 2 or 3 democrats, and one of the republicans will be way ahead of the other, so hopefully our general will be 1 D and 1 R. Fingers crossed.

  • San

Uff. The ballot. I haven’t opened mine yet but knew the list of candidates is long. I went to Becerra’s Town Hall here in Sac earlier this week just to see what he had to say. I am also still waffling between a couple of candidates but will make up my mind soon.

We don’t do breakfast for dinner very often (because we meal pan for the week) but I am not opposed to it at all. Sometimes it’s nice and quick and easy!

Your little library is so cute. 🙂

  • Lisa’s Yarns

Those kitties are so adorable! The dark one looks shocked in the photo, though. The orange one reminds me of our cat when she was a kitten.

Ted looks so happy and handsome in front of the LFL!

Dang that is a lot of primary candidates. I have never seen something like that!!

    • J

Both of the kitties are really scared. I hope they get braver as time goes by, it must be a lot of stress for them.

Our primary system is weird. It has never been this bad before though.

  • StephLove

Those kittens are darling. I’ve always wanted an orange cat, but never had one.

We are having almond flour pancakes with mulberries for dinner later this week.

  • Diane

Pots and pans are ao awkward to store! When I was growing up my mother put them in the oven. Of course she didn’t bake much so it was moatly fine. Our current house has a hanging pot rack and I love it. Pots and pans grt hung and lids go into andeep drawer. i *have* thought about getting an organizer similar tobtour new one for baking sheets, though.
61 options!!!!?!! That’a too many. Also- I’m always amazed at people who manage to run for theae high profile positions- it takes so much money to run a campaign. And optimism too, I guess.

    • J

I think your hanging option is a great way to go. It might also limit the number of items you accumulate, which would be a good thing in our case.

I think a lot of the people on my ballot are yahoos trying to get their name out there for some other reason, so they don’t spend any money beyond the filing fee. I’d guess there are 10 people who are even serious. It’s a joke (as in, ridiculous)

  • Michelle G.

The number of candidates on your ballot is impressive! I’ve never seen anything like that! Your little free library is so adorable. The kitties are adorable. The toy horses are adorable! So many adorable things! I love breakfast for dinner – and for lunch – and for breakfast!

    • J

Sometimes it annoys me, because I don’t want to compromise. But in this case (and so many cases) it’s what we can get.

  • Jenny

GAH THOSE KITTENS!!! They are so, so cute. You’ll have to keep us updated- I hope they become less scared. And I hope they can get adopted together!!! I hope Anastasia is enjoying her new home.
Breakfast is definitely my favorite meal… now I want pancakes for dinner ; )

    • J

The kittens were so cute, but afraid, so I didn’t get to say hi to them. They were both adopted, though I think to different families.

      Mmm. Pancakes.

  • Stephany

Yay, Anastasia! I hope her new home is everything she needs. <3

I giggled at the photo of the new kittens. The one on the left has the biggest eyes! I want to snuggle both of them and love them forever. I hope they start feeling more comfortable! At leas they are enjoying each other's company.

It will probably not surprise you that my kitchen cabinets are NOT a disaster. They are lovingly organized because of who I am as a person, lolol.

Omeletes is always dinner for me.
I woudl eat it for breakfast though.

Its weird how different it is. Like for my husband scrambbled eggs are breakfast and hard boilded egg dinner. For me its the other way around.
