• Friday Randomness, now with Waffles!

OK, this started out to be a review of a waffle mix I recently tried, but it’s fallen completely apart, and really, I should have separated this into two posts, but I didn’t.  So what?  My blog, my rules, even if they’re stupid.  So. Here’s the waffle part I recently found myself trolling Williams-Sonoma for some of their yummy pumpkin pecan waffle mix, which I’ve pushed on you before.  I didn’t see any on the floor, but they did have this Caramel Apple waffle mix, so I decided to try it.  I mean, the pumpkin waffles are awesome, and I love apples, and I love caramel, so I bought some. …

  • Blog Comment Day ~ Results

(monkeys found here) Yesterday was Blog Comment Day, and the assignment was to leave at least 5 comments throughout your blogging day (I always do anyway), and that two of these comments should be to blogs where you have never commented before.  Rather than doing a random ‘next blog’ type thing, I decided to mine the blogrolls of some bloggy friends.  I popped over to Red Stapler, and picked two blogs from her blogroll with tantalizing names. I visited Godammit, I’m Mad!, and commiserated with her frustration at people feeling pretty high and mighty about buying the Starbucks coffee that donated $.05 to AIDS relief on December first. I also…

  • Life As We Knew It/The Dead and The Gone

Life As We Knew It and The Dead and The Gone are companion young adult/science fiction novels covering the same events from the points of view of two different characters.  In both stories, the moon is struck by a very large meteor, pushing the moon off its axis and closer to Earth, resulting in tsunamis, violent storms, droughts, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.  These natural disasters result in power shortages, food shortages, crop failures, widespread death and disease, and the failure of communication systems worldwide. Life As We Knew It centers on 16-year-old Miranda and her family, who live in rural Pennsylvania.  It is written in the form of Miranda’s diary,…

  • I’m participating in Blog Comment Day

On December 3, 2008, leave one comment on at least 5 different blogs. Out of the 5 blogs you comment on, at least 2 of them will be blogs you haven’t commented on previously. Sound like fun?  I’ll be snooping around your blogrolls for something new to read, so I can comment there on Wednesday.  🙂 If you participate, go tell John you’re doing it as well.

  • Charming Billy

Billy Lynch, alcoholic, romantic, kind and loving man, has died.   His friends and family come together to comfort his widow, and to celebrate his life.   And Billy’s life seems to have two stories to it.  The sad story of his alcoholism, which his friends and family tried again and again to guide him away from, with no success.  And the sad story of his first love, an Irish girl whom he intended to marry, but who goes back to Ireland and dies.  At least, that’s what Billy is told.  The truth is, she took the money he sent her for her passage to America, bought a gas station…

  • Saturday Stupidness

(I’d like to go on the record and say, I scored an 80%, not a 80%.  Sorry.  I know that makes me really, really anal.) ~DoSoEvAyMo 1. Call my sisters…it’s their birthday today!  Happy Birthday, Maya and Melissa!  Wish I could be there to have some cake and ice cream with you. 2. Go to Stockton for a funeral.  My brother’s wife’s father passed away last week.  He was a wonderful man, and will be dearly missed by many people.  We liked him an awful lot.

  • 100 Foods Meme

(photo found here) Thanksgiving is known, not only as a day to share our thanks, but also as a day to feast.  In the spirit of feasting, I thought I would take on this meme that RelaxedDad tried (he did it in two parts).  Some of the foods are clearly European, as I didn’t even know what the heck they were.  Here are the rules: Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions. Bold all the items you’ve eaten. Cross out any items that you would never consider eating. Optional extra: Post a comment here at www.verygoodtaste.co.uk linking to your results. So now to the foodstuffs! 1.…

  • Thankful

My plan for today’s blog was to make a Thursday 13, and list 13 things for which I am thankful.  Family, friends, our health, having a job, good elections, etc. etc. As so often happens, though, life got in the way.  Let me tell you what happened. Ted and I use WordPress to maintain our blogs.  Ted’s really good about updating his blog to the most current version of WordPress, but often the update comes with a small hand full of problems.  There will be something new that he has to tweak, and it takes time, and blah blah blah.  Me?  I’m more the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix…

  • Champagne Turkey Recipe

When I moved to San Francisco in 1987, I worked at a big hotel as a front desk clerk. Since I had no seniority, I had to work both Thanksgiving and Christmas days. My roommate, Troy, worked at another hotel (though he later left and came to work at the same hotel as me). He had the pleasure of working the ‘graveyard’ shift, so he was usually asleep while I was at school or work, and I was asleep while he was at work. Troy was a pretty darned good cook, and on Thanksgiving Day, while I was working, he cooked a delicious Thanksgiving meal for me and some of…

  • Run

Run begins with the story of Bernadette’s statue, an heirloom especially treasured by the women in her family. The statue is of Mary, Mother of God, and looks remarkably like the women in the family. The daughter who looks the most like the statue inherits it, and the others bitterly wish it were theirs. Now that she has died, with three sons and no daughters, her sisters show up, demanding that her husband give it to them. We hear the history of the statue, which is sweet and sad and full of lies. Bernadette and her husband Bernard had three sons. They both wanted large families, and though they had…

  • I’ve been tagged…twice

Ombudsben and Donna both tagged me for this most recent form of a fairly popular meme…7 random things about me.  Maya would like that, as one of her favorite words is ‘random’.  So, here goes. 1.  Amuirin reminded me of this with her 7 random things meme.  When I was a very young child, I cut off the tip of my finger.   My mom was cutting carrots for dinner, and had to go to the bathroom.  She put the knife (she thought) out of my reach, and away she went.  I somehow reached the knife, tried to cut the carrot, and sliced through my fingertip.  OUCH!  I screamed pretty loudly,…

  • Grateful

The writing prompt for this week’s Sunday Scribblings is Grateful.  I’m thinking of writing of things I’m thankful for on Thanksgiving, so at first I thought that this might be redundant.  Then I decided that instead of writing about all of the things for which I am thankful, I would write about my mom, and how grateful I am that I had the time that I had with her. I am grateful for those early years, living in the Bay Area as a small child.  My mom was working and going to school and raising two small children.  Money was very tight, but she never let that be a big…

  • J & Py’s Weight Loss Plan

(funny pic found here) Want to lose 5 pounds in a week?  Here’s what you do.  First, catch a stupid cold.  Your nose stuffs up, your throat is raw, and you feel like crap.   Because you’re sick, you give up your evening wine habit.  This is probably the biggest factor in the weight loss. Drink a lot of water, a lot of tea, and then more water, trying to flush the yuckies out.   Enjoy that false full feeling, even though your tummy might actually be kinda empty. Lastly, when your cold progresses to the ‘coughing up a lung’ stage, think of the ab work you’re getting!  It’s better than crunches! …

  • Friday Dog Blogging

Hi Everyone!  This is Genevieve, and I thought you might like to hear about the stressful week I’ve been having! So my Big Boss got the dopey idea this week that I might enjoy a trip to a very strange place called the ‘dog park’.  Have you heard of these places?  Scary!  What happens is, they take you in, take you off of your leash (how am I to feel secure if I’m not on my leash???  HELLO!), and then try to get you to join a wild pack of dogs that are running around like they might be insane.  What’s to like about that?  So I told him, using…
