Meme Monday – Miscellany
We’ve all done this around here…the worst was the time I got all of the way to the grocery store and then had to come home and get my mask. The store isn’t too far from my house, but still, I was on my lunch hour, so it was annoying. As disposable masks became more available, we got smart and started keeping some in the car and in my purse.
I’m hopeful that this will be a light flu season, as so many people are washing hands better and wearing masks and not congregating and so on. We got our flu shots, just in case.
We’re not getting new cabinets, but we ARE getting new windows, which is very exciting. Ours are old and drafty and single paned, and our neighborhood gets louder all of the time, and is going to get even more so once construction starts on the huge apartment complex that is going on next to our condos. And we’re not spending money like we used to, no vacation, no new clothes, none of that, so we decided to bite the bullet and do something that will hopefully bring our heating and air conditioning bills down a bit.
On the topic of money, if you spend most of your money at the grocery store, Chase has a credit card that will give you 5% cash back for the first 12 months of grocery spending, up to 12,000, which equals $600. It also gives a $200 bonus if you spend $500 in the first 2 months, and gives 3% cash back on restaurants and drug stores. I just got mine in the mail, looking forward to getting some points on that one. I try to save points for vacation. My dad and stepmom paid for their vacation to Africa using mostly points, I think. If you don’t carry a balance, it’s a good way to go. Of course, if you DO carry a balance, credit cards are not the way to go, as the interest rate is far higher than the points you will get. It’s the Chase Freedom Unlimited, and it looks like they have several versions with different point structures. The one that got me was the grocery store one, because that’s where I spend most of my money.
It looks like fall might finally be arriving. Sure it’s been in the 90s, but the weather is supposed to cool down to 70s and 80s by the end of the week, which will be a huge relief. I get so tired of the heat, it wears me out.
Oh, Maya signed up for Hulu, and we’ve been enjoying ‘Little Fires Everywhere’. I bought her the book several months ago, but neither of us have read it, so I don’t know how it compares. I recommend it.

“Little Fires” was written by a NEO writer–Shaker Heights, I think…? We watch a lot of mindless junk on Hulu, which is sad, I know. It’s hard for us to get into anything deep and thinky or dramatic right now. My brain just needs a break.
I, too, have done The Mask Reverse a few times, and now keep a few in the car. My grocery store has disposables for super-cheap, so they are always in the glove box.
How very odd our lives suddenly became! (As if they weren’t feeling exhausting enough.)

Indeed, our lives have become strange!
‘Little Fires’ does take place in Shaker Heights, and if you haven’t read it, has a lot to say about social injustice, so if you’re not up for that right now, let it wait! We’re also re-watching ‘Beverly Hills, 90210’, so believe me, I get it. And the new season of the Great British Baking Show, which I adore.

I agree with you about how useful points can be. We pay off our balance each month and have a Kroger credit card that’s similar to the one you got. Getting those points makes me smile every time.
I want to watch Little Fires and we have Hulu, but I’ve yet to start it. I’m keeping it in reserve for when the weather turns bleak and I’ll need something engaging to keep me entertained.

Ally, smart to save it, it’s only 8 episodes…about one hour each. Maybe a stormy weekend watch?
I love points. I’m hooked on them. I’m new to the game, other than straight airline points, and I find that I actually enjoy having different cards that I use different places for maximum points. I suspect that is a sign of some disorder or another and that I may need help.
