Licorice Day!

Today, April 12, is National Licorice Day! Who knew? As a matter of fact, you may wonder how I know this factoid. Well, I went over to Chrissy’s blog, where I saw the pile of candy that she won, and spied in that enviable pile a Bit O’ Honey. I remember Bit O’ Honey being made by the Ward Candy Company, because my maiden name was Ward, and I used to imagine that it was MY company, or maybe my Grandpa’s company, and I would be able to invent all kinds of groovy candy, ala Willy Wonka. Well, Nestle bought the company at some point, and I felt a little sad the first time I looked at a Bit O’ Honey wrapper and saw Nestle instead of Ward. Sigh.

So, I left a comment for Chrissy, and then went on a Google search for Bit O’ Honey and Ward Candy Company, and found this blog post. I read it, and commented, and then went to the Home page, to see what was new…and what was new is a Red Vine Giveaway! And you have until 10AM TODAY to enter! So hop to it!

The giveaway is in honor of today being National Licorice Day, which is interesting, because Red Vines don’t really taste like licorice, do they? When I think of licorice, I think of the black anise tasting stuff. I love it, but many folks hate it. I suspect many folks that hate it think it tastes like anise flavored medicine. But I grew up with cherry flavored medicine, so no problem here.

Anyway, happy Licorice day! Have a chew, and ponder…do you pronounce it ‘Lick or iss’, or ‘Lick or ish’? No right or wrong answers here, but I’m just wondering.

“Ish” here. And have you ever had the “authentic” kind, made in Holland, where you have to specify salted or unsalted. shudder Both are horrid.

Love, love black lick-or-ish! And I’ve recently discovered the pleasures of licorice tea. I recommend it!

Would have bought some if I’d known about this yesterday…well, I guess there is always next year. 😀

Ok this is just a little too creepy.
Yesterday, while I was out picking up a new blush because I had dropped mine and broke the last of the powder cake to tiny cake bits, I walked down the candy aisle because I enjoy looking at all the candy and getting all gitty inside because I COULD buy all of this candy if I wanted to and no one would make me choose just one. I had recalled my craving of Red Vines from the week before and I bought a box.
I RARELY buy Red Vines, and thought of you when I did. And now… now I know why I really bought it yesterday. Because it was Licorice Day! YAY!

I had noooooooooo idea about Licorice Day! I learn something new on your blog everyday, J! 😉

P.S. I Googled the Ward Candy Company too (after reading your comment)! Oh, and winning all that awesome candy certainly isn’t helping me cut out sugar from our lives! LOL!
