Lick The Tins
Do you remember that 80’s John Hughes movie, “Some Kind of Wonderful“, in which the boy (Eric Stoltz) is in love with the ‘pretty’ girl (Lea Thompson), while the ‘cool’ girl (Mary Stuart Masterson) pines away for him, hoping he’ll wake up enough to notice that she’s actually cute and might be a better match for him? I really liked that movie, especially since I never felt like I was as pretty as my friends, and so worked to cultivate a ‘cool’ persona instead. So I identified with her. Of course, I suspect everyone identifies with the unrequited love theme at some point in their lives. Anyway, the movie ends happily, and cool chick gets the guy. Whew. One fun thing about the movie is the soundtrack, and one song I always loved was the remake of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”, by Lick the Tins. It’s SO much better than the UB40 version. Really.
So we looked on YouTube, and Py found a version that included pictures of the band, etc., but it was just still pics that repeated, and I wondered if there might be something more fun out there. I found a totally cute version, set to some kind of Japanese love story that seems to center around a free spirited girl with an unlimited budget for clothing, who likes to wink in a cheerful manner. Enjoy!

Definitely prefer the Lick The Tin rendition. The Japanese love storyline takes a bit of getting used to.

LOL! I LOVE this post, J! There’s something so special about movies like “Some Kind of Wonderful”. I can relate to a lot of the movies made in that time!
The Japanese video made me chuckle because the girl in the video reminds me of a very good Japanese friend of mine when I was teaching in Japan! She had the same quirky mannerisms and the same “cheerful” winking thing going! LOL!
I like the flute and drums in the beginning of the song.
Thanks for this wonderful post, J!

I thought that Japanese film had just the right amount of “weird.” And who says they don’t make good films anymore?

Ah. One of my childhood favs, that movie is. And that song tops my list of great movie music. I used to wander the stores looking for the soundtrack. Maybe I’ll see if iTunes has it? Guilty pleasures.
