J is for Jules
Jules follows Milton (Ben Kingsley) who lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town, but finds his day upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the extra-terrestrial he calls “Jules.” Things become complicated when two neighbors (Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin) discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. What follows is a funny, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbors find meaning and connection later in life – thanks to this unlikely stranger.

We watched Jules on Apple TV a few weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. It’s a gentle movie, about aging, alienation, and the meaning of friendship. Excellent performances all around. Highly recommended.
Bonus content – Does anyone remember the group Til Tuesday? They had a great song, J for Jules, which of course is running through my brain now.

I’ve not heard of this movie and without Apple TV+ I won’t be seeing it any time soon. Sounds delightful, my kind of movie. Plus Jane Curtain! She can do no wrong in my worldview.
J
Ally, it was really good. I’m hoping it will show up on other platforms as well. It was in the theater for about 15 minutes a few months ago, but I didn’t make it there in time.

I’ve never heard of this movie but it sounds good! I’ve also never hear of the song, or the group Til Tuesday for that matter (wow, I’m really out of it.) Now I’m curious about the song.
J
Jenny, Til Tuesday was big in Indie circles, and had one or two popular songs in the late 80s and early 90s. Aimee Mann was the singer, she’s wonderful.

Alas, we are not Apple TV streamers. This sounds a little like ET meets K-PAX.
Love Til Tuesday and Aimee Mann. Their song “Voices Carry” (and the video) was a favourite of mine in the 80s. She did a great song for the movie “Magnolia”, too–“Wise Up”.

I can only watch Apple TV on my laptop unless I cast to my TV which I’m sometimes too lazy to do! They have so many excellent programs.
J
Margaret, we have an Apple TV that we use to wach on our TV, but I also sometimes mirror things from my laptop.
J
Nance, I’m hoping Jules shows up on other platforms soon, so everyone can see it. And yeah, Til Tuesday/Aimee Mann are favorites around here.

This movie sounds lovely — I hadn’t heard of it before.

Wow, thank you for sharing!! I briefly thought the post was dedicated to your blog name ;).
J
Daria, yeah, I thought of that too!
Margaret
I’ve never heard of the song or group, but it went immediately into my Apple Music. Great song!
J
Margaret, I’m glad you like it! It’s from my favorite Til Tuesday album, Everything’s Different Now.

I love a good recommendation for a show, but dang we don’t have Apple TV. I wish TV shows were on the television like in the old days so I didn’t have FOMO. I’m not big on sci-fi, but it does sound like a cute premise. I don’t remember that group.

This is a movie, so not quite the same, but I get it. We spend FAR too much money on our subscriptions, it’s frustrating. This one was in the theater and is now available. I hope it will be on all streaming eventually.

Loving all the media recs!

Thanks Sarah! I think this is the last one for awhile, just trying to stick to my A-Z Theme. 🙂
