  • Crisis Averted…

No need to find out if the world will end or not, because of me having nothing to say.  Shockingly, the source of my inspiration is me wanting to bestow major kudos on a conservative Christian Republican from Texas.  From the A/P: Governor Rick Perry signed an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer…. Beginning in September 2008, girls entering the sixth grade — meaning, generally, girls ages 11 and 12 — will have to get Gardasil, Merck & Co.’s new vaccine against strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV. I’m going to ignore…

  • Misc. Friday Stuff

I was at an all day meeting at work yesterday, and it was interesting and fun, but I don’t talk about work on my blog, so that’s that.  But, since I usually write my post the evening before, and post in the morning, I don’t have a lot of time to post much now.  Gotta shower, get ready for school, walk the dog, etc.  What to do?  Just miscellaneous stuff, I think, is the way to go.  Some of this stuff could easily be flushed out into long, serious posts of their own, but not today. 1. A piece of advice.  If you don’t keep your glasses in the SAME PLACE…

  • At The Mall

People didn’t really believe in war even while they planned it. The Salinas Valley lived about as it always had. ~ John Steinbeck, East of Eden Ted and I were watching “NOW” the other night, an episode titled “Back to the Front” that followed troops from Fort Stewart, in Georgia, as they prepare to go to Iraq on their second, sometimes third, tour of duty. Although I have a dear friend who was a Captain in the Air Force, she left the military prior to September 11th, and never had to leave her children and husband behind while she went to war. Neither did she have to wait at home…

  • WTF?

I wasn’t going to write about this today…I like the happy date-a-versary thing, and why be a downer and take away from the fun? But this story I read in the paper is needling me, threatening to drive me nuts if I don’t write something about it, to get it on ‘paper’ and out of my head. Iran is holding a two day conference to determine whether the Holocaust indeed happened. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has called the Holocaust a ‘myth’, and Israel a ‘tumor’. Clearly, the goal here is to show that he is a President who can stand up to the West, as well as to support claims that…

  • Idaho? No thanks.

Not to lump a whole state into one nutty town, but I’m thinking no. Has anyone read about this news story? Here’s the gist. The tiny town of Greenleaf Idaho has passed a law that residents “who do not object on religious or other grounds…keep a gun in the home.” What? OK, don’t worry, all you have to do is object on any grounds you want to be exempt from this law, so it’s pretty much gutless. But what is the reason behind this law? “…citizens should be armed in case Greenleaf, which sits on high ground, is overrun by refugees in a Katrina-like flood.” Get that? Because when your…

  • An Open Letter to the Democrats

Dear Democrats, Congratulations!  I am delighted that you have come in to serve as a balance to the freaks that have been running this country for the last 6 years.  We desperately need some moderation out there, someone to keep things under control so that we don’t end up in a theocracy or a monarchy anytime soon. I find it distressing, however, that it appears that you could not have won this race without the Republicans shooting themselves in the face.  As I see it, you won because some Republicans couldn’t keep themselves from harassing young boys, or at least being complicit in allowing it to continue.  You won because…

  • When You Lay Down With Dogs….

…you wake up with fleas. Again and again in U.S. foreign policy (and world history, to be fair), this idiom has proven itself to be true. When I was an International Relations major at San Francisco State in the late 80s, the focus was on Central America and our involvement there. Now, the focus is on the Middle East. Watching “Frontline” on PBS last night, the focus was on the Taliban, and the support that they have received by our ally, Pakistan. Watching the fanaticism and rage that is held by these people, it occurs to me that the history of our involvement in this region has been a disaster…

  • Time for Bloggy Love

Last month, I was on the ball, and gave a ‘perfect post’ award. I kind of thought of doing that again, but for me to do that would mean keeping the idea in the back of my head all dang month, and remembering which blog would be worthy, and comparing it to others that would be worthy, etc. etc. etc. I know, I can copy and paste the URL into a draft, or I could go all 20th century and write them down on a piece of PAPER or something, but instead, I just think, “Wow, that was good stuff”, leave my comment, and move on. I read great stuff…

  • This Just In…Politicians SUCK

How else to explain the vote this week in the Senate, which would give the Congress the power to ban flag burning? What can this be, if not pandering to the right wing before the November elections? As to flag burning itself, I hate to see it. I do not enjoy watching someone burn a flag on TV, because of what it represents, the hatred which that person holds for America. Usually when you see a flag burned, it is happening in a foreign land, and the people there are ANGRY with America. I guess I just want to be liked, want my country to be liked, and I hate…

  • Proof of the Apocalypse #2

I found myself agreeing with some guy on MSNBC last night. I thought that was a conservative run station, and probably it is (I don’t watch enough of it to be sure), but this guy, Keith Olbermann, was talking about She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named* last night, and her latest desperate plea for attention…and I agreed with him. Of course, nothing that she has done lately has changed my opinion of her in the least, because I HATE HER and I think she is EVIL and surely has 6-6-6 tattooed on the underside of her tongue (as well as the inside of her eyelids), but maybe, just maybe, this time she has gone too…

  • I Voted….Did You?

Several states around the nation are having primary elections today. We just went and voted (not for Arnie, in case you’re wondering…), and boy, the turnout was BAD. We were voters #12 and #13 for the day, so far. Ted got to try some fancy new computerized system, and I had to do a provisional ballot, because I requested an absentee ballot, but then forgot to fill it out and send it in (and I also lost it…). So at least we provided a little bit of excitement for the folks at the community center. 🙂 If you haven’t voted yet, and you’re in a state holding elections today, get…

  • Why I LOVE me an Angry Black Bitch Once in Awhile

Because I have this thought in the back of my head, which goes something like, “Why would we want a Constitutional Amendment outlawing Gay Marriage, which will be overturned someday when our ideas of Civil Rights are a bit more defined and humane, and when we have bigger fish to fry?”, and she writes this, which talks about so much more…about how our Congress is a bunch of mamby pamby asshats that worry too much about stupid shit and not enough about REAL issues. Like poverty. Like health care. Like education. Here’s a quote of her brilliance: “Tell me how a bitch prepares to look the desperate, denied, hungry and…

  • Proof of the Apocolypse:

Noam Chomsky talking at West Point on CSPAN2. Never thought I would see that. Yet there it was on Monday night TV. (It was on Book TV, which won’t come up right now, so I can’t find out if there’s a link to the actual show or not. Like you’d want to watch it, I know. It was classic Chomsky, though, which is always interesting.) Proof I married well: When the cadet goes up and gives Chomsky a gift at the end of his talk, Ted says, “What if it’s the user manuel to his car?” HA!

  • What’s W doing at Mom 101’s Blog?

Looks like he took over for a few minutes and did a meme. Mom 101, I hope they didn’t ship you off to Gitmo while he worked on this! ‘Cause you know, it probably took him quite awhile!

  • Disturbing Thoughts…

Friday I went into the office to do some work, and I was going through some client files, and I discovered that one of our old, inactive clients was Enron. That got me thinking…I wonder if I would have felt differently about them back in 2001, when I was sweating in the dark, unwilling to turn on the a/c or a light, trying to keep my electric bill under control, worried about rolling power outs, while they were raping California for money, laughing all of the way to the bank. Would I have hated them less if they had been a current client? Somehow I doubt it. Another disturbing thing…
