Musings

  • Town or Country?

Are you a town mouse, or a country mouse? That’s the question posed today at Sunday Scribbling. I could say either…I love the city, the lights and the vibrancy and the diversity and the culture. I lived in San Francisco for 7 years, and never thought I would leave. I loved the restaurants, the shops, the odd people on the bus (though not always their smells or habits), all of it. Of course, city living has its downside…parking is an issue, hard to find a place with a washer and drier hook up, and to buy rather than rent requires the kind of income that I will never attain. Country…

  • Anatomy of a Wedding Shower

It seems that a certain Miss Cherry is getting married in a few short weeks, and as her de facto maid of honor type person, I decided to have a wedding shower for her today. Yay! So, let’s see, what do we need… Guests…check! We’ve invited family and friends to come and take it easy, have some snacks and drinks, get to know each other, and shower her with lovely gifts. Gifts….check! Including several big and heavy ones sent by far away family who couldn’t be here, and I’ve been dying to tell her that they’re here, but I would prefer for her to be surprised… Food…check! It’s an afternoon…

  • Spending $$$

Ms. Mamma had a post the other day, in which she was sporting some stylin’ new shades. She mentioned that she almost didn’t buy them, because they were expensive, and she’s not rich. Immediately, my mind went to a ploop type graph, in which I show WHY I don’t buy expensive sunglasses. As you can see, I have tried a couple of times to own cool, sexy sunglasses, but it’s really not a good idea. I said as much to Ms. Mamma, and she replied that she is gifted in such a way that when she buys sunglasses, she keeps them as long as she wants to, unless her mom…

  • Misc. Thoughts…

(I found this odd apple image at http://princev.front.ru) Maya’s come home from Science Camp. It is SO nice to see her…to hug her and hear her stories. They took hikes, sang songs, went to the ocean, checked out tidepools, saw tons of stars, and Maya won the title of “Hard Core” by eating an entire apple, stem, seeds, and all. Atta girl. Watched “The Queen” the other day. It was good. It was interesting to see a bit of what maybe went on in the royal family at that time. I came away with a feeling of, ‘wow, I’m glad I’m not part of THAT messed up family.’ And while…

  • Friday Poll

I’m stealing this one from Gina…she likes to do Friday Polls, and I’m jumping in. But I honestly want some advice here, which she sometimes does, sometimes doesn’t… I was talking to my mom last weekend, and she told me two interesting things that I have yet to test, and I’m not sure when I will be able… 1. A great cure for PMS? Chocolate covered potato chips. I wonder, does this work equally well for chocolate covered pretzels, or do you need the potato and deep fried fattiness of it to make it work? Because I don’t think I’ve ever SEEN chocolate covered potato chips. 2. A great cure…

  • Pickney Gone…

Maya’s gone to Science Camp for the week…or, truthfully, she will have gone in a few hours, right now she’s still asleep in bed.  But once I take her to school today, she’s off for a week of hiking in the woods, exploring tidepools, looking at different biomes and ecosystems…fun fun fun.  I don’t know if most states/areas do Science Camp, but I gotta say, it was the BEST week of my whole elementary school education.  It was the first time I was away from family for that long, which is a pretty liberating feeling.  No homework or regular school stuff to do, which is also awesome.  Nature, hanging out…

  • Does God Speak to You?

He doesn’t so much speak to me, as he sends me emails….like this one (see the return address…does this mean that God is processing loans in Russia? I thought he had a better gig than that?), that I received yesterday…what I kinda wish, though, was that he would use my home email, rather than my work one.  It’s more personal, right?

  • Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is traditionally a day for honoring our mothers, our grandmothers, our wives if they are mothers. We do this by taking them to lunch or dinner, giving them flowers and gifts, making sure we understand how special they are to us, how important they are, and that we appreciate all of the things that they have given us, and what they do for us. It was interesting for me to find that the original purpose of Mother’s Day had nothing to do with Hallmark or FTD, crowded restaurants and long buffet lines…it had to do with searching for peace. Julia Ward Howe (hey, that’s almost my maiden name!)…

  • Misc. Linky Love

Meandering around the blogosphere, dipping into worlds unknown, I come across some things too groovy not to share. So here we are, I’m sharing them. Because I’m nice like that. 1. Check out Ms. Mama’s bathroom. I’m seriously impressed, and Ted and I now want to pay for her and Snowflake to come out and give us a cool room like this sometime. Seriously cool. 2. Ally Bean has a groovy sign in her ‘hood. Check it out. 3. Curiosity Killer has a cautionary tale about what people do when they find out they only have a short time to live…and then find out that it was a mistake… 4.…

  • Five Friday Thoughts

Five things I’m thinking about today… 1.  Even though we haven’t gotten any offers on our place yet, it’s really nice having it SO CLEAN all of the time.  I kinda miss our stuff, but not the clutter, if that makes sense. 2.  Is Locke really dead?  Hmmm.  Could be.  Sure looked that way.  Doesn’t mean we won’t see him in ghosty form, does it? 3.  We got Genevieve groomed last Friday, and she’s soooo soft and lovely.  It’s different when we give her a bath at home, for some reason.  I don’t know if it’s the conditioner they use, or if it’s the brushing, or the blow drying, or…

  • Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow…

A few weeks ago, I found myself at a crossroads.  One of the complicated (well, it doesn’t HAVE to be complicated) moments in a woman’s life…to cut my hair short, or not to cut my hair short?  Way back as a young child, circa preschool, I LOVED long hair, but I wasn’t allowed to have it.  Once I was old enough to care for it myself,  I was allowed to grow my hair long (not that much later, actually).  Since then, it’s been a back and forth, a dance, long hair for a few years, short hair for a few years, grow it out, long hair for a few years, always…

  • What’s in YOUR Freezer?

Part of getting our place ready for an open house has been cleaning and decluttering all of the places that nosy people might peek.  Since the refrigerator and freezer are included in the sale of the place, I suppose they have a right to peek in there to see what kind of science experiments we might be growing.  The answer? None.  That is one CLEAN fridge and freezer, let me tell you. After cleaning out the freezer, and throwing away a lot of half eaten boxes of Popsicles, things like that, I was making Maya’s lunch yesterday, and I saw this lovely box of popcorn chicken. “Hey,” I thought, “I…

  • Happy Birthday Mom!

(This is my mom looking a lot like Shirley Temple…) Today is my wonderful mom’s birthday! I wrote a post to her last year that pretty much summed up what I would say today…and if I trusted you to go to the old post and read it, I would leave it at that.  But knowing how lazy I am about clicking other people’s links, instead, I’ll paste it into this post, and you can read about my amazing mom: Today is my Mom’s birthday.  You may think you have a good mom, but my mom will trump her in almost any category – and since today is her birthday, we’ll…
