  • Flashback Friday – Hiking El Capitan

Here is a blurry photo of me taken in 1984, from the top of El Capitan in Yosemite Park. I have a perm, so likely it’s a good thing it’s blurry. We didn’t have digital photos back then, and this is from Rosemary’s point and shoot. You may have seen pictures of people scaling up the face of El Capitan with ropes, but there is a trail that gets you to the peak that you can do in a few hours, without ropes and so on, and this site has great pictures and a description of the hike. This is El Capitan. If you climb up the face, the ‘nose…

  • Meme Monday – Weird Junk Food Version

I can’t even with the election tomorrow, I’m afraid I will grind through my mouth guard if I get any more stressed out about it. So I’m taking a deep breath and showing you some food products that I have seen (mostly) at the grocery store. I was at the drugstore the other day, and I spotted these very strange Apple Pie flavored KitKats. I don’t really like white chocolate, and the entire idea of this makes me want to throw up a bit, so no. But I took a picture for Ted, who loved KitKats back when his body still tolerated such things, especially the ones from England. Then…

  • Red Lentil Soup with Warm Spices

I came accross this recipe on Facebook, because I follow Cooks Illustrated. I saved it and waited for the right day, and happily, that day finally came with the cooler weather. The soup is delicious and warm and has lovely flavors. We had it 3 different ways…I had the soup with some sourdough bread, Ted is low carb, so had his with some chicken in the bottom of the bowl, and Maya is vegetarian (mostly, she eats a bit of fish), and she had hers over some fake chicken with some sourdough bread. We all liked it a lot, though Maya didn’t use the mint/paprika/butter at the end. Beautiful photo…

  • Meme Monday – Miscellany

We’ve all done this around here…the worst was the time I got all of the way to the grocery store and then had to come home and get my mask. The store isn’t too far from my house, but still, I was on my lunch hour, so it was annoying. As disposable masks became more available, we got smart and started keeping some in the car and in my purse. I’m hopeful that this will be a light flu season, as so many people are washing hands better and wearing masks and not congregating and so on. We got our flu shots, just in case. We’re not getting new cabinets,…

  • Meme Monday

I’ll probably dive down into the depths of the shit storm of 2020 next week, but for now, wanted to lighten up a bit. So, here it is… We had a lovely weekend. Saturday was errands, including Bed Bath and Beyond, because our electric kettle broke. Ted got a new cookbook, Indian-ish, and made us a delicious dinner. He’s been watching the author’s videos on YouTube, and really likes her. She worked for Bon Appetit for awhile, and made some videos of recipes for them. She mostly seems to credit her mother’s recipes, which as a mother, I like. It’s Indian fusion, and so far really good. We’ve had a…

  • Meme Monday – COVID Edition

“They were careless people…they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby Frankly, I’m surprised that it took this long for Trump and his cronies to catch COVID. How did they prevent him from getting it for so long? I can only assume that there are some people in the White House that actually believe in science and have done their best to force him to be safe. Eventually his bravado and jack-assary got the better…

  • A Day of ‘Firsts’

Today was a day of ‘firsts in awhile’…I haven’t done any of these things since SIP started in March. 1. Got $$ from the ATM 2. Went to the Farmer’s Market 3. Went to a movie I haven’t needed cash, really the place I spend it most is at the Farmer’s Market. I don’t know WHY I haven’t been going there, it’s obviously even more safe than the grocery store, but I did worry about being around too many people, and then there was smoke and hot days and blah blah blah. It wasn’t crowded, everyone was wearing masks (even though the guy selling grapes had his under his nose…)…

  • (Not) Wordless Wednesday

People sometimes ask what your favorite season is, and I have trouble with that one, because there are things I really like about each. Spring – rain and everything is green and flowers…Summer – great produce, listening to kids play in the pool, more relaxed vibe (at least when Maya was still in school). Autumn – changing leaves, cool crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Winter – cool, sometimes cold weather, being cozy inside when it is wet outdoors, rain, holidays. Know what season I hate? FIRE SEASON.

  • Mrs. Mata

This is a somewhat blurry picture of my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Mata, taken when she was much younger than when I knew her. She retired just a few years after I was in her class. I don’t remember a lot from that year in school, but I do remember her being a very good teacher, kind and involved and helpful. And short. I found out today, via Facebook, that the Stockton Unified School District has named their newest school (opening this school year, what a year to open!) for her. Here is the bio, from the school website, which is also where I got the photo. I had no…

  • Nice vs. Kind

Ally had a post the other day about her rules for how to live her life, and in the comments, Nance mentioned that the only rule she lives by is to be kind. Then I saw this meme on FB, and it got me thinking about the difference between being nice and being kind. According to this post, the main difference is in your motivation. Nice is about how you want to be perceived, whereas kind is about genuine compassion and caring. From the post: “If you get offended when people don’t offer you praise for being “nice” then you can be certain you aren’t being kind.” I agreed with…

  • We Are Being Tested – And We are Failing

“All were unconscious that this experience was a test of character, and, when the first excitement was over, felt that they had done well, and deserved praise. So they did; but their mistake was in ceasing to do well, and they learned this lesson through much anxiety and regret.” ~ Louisa May Alcott, Little Women California did so well at the beginning of all of this, we crushed the curve. At least, it felt that way. I felt sorry for the people in New York and Louisiana and so on. I felt a little smug, actually. And now, here we are, mid-July, and hospitalizations in my county have tripled since…

  • Splurge Worthy

Photo and recipe found here. Fresh crab meat is expensive. Our local grocery store sells fresh Dungeness crab meat for just under $40 a pound. At that price, you want to be sure your recipe isn’t going to bury it with too much mayo or bread. Last week was our staycation. We were supposed to go to Portland to see family and scatter my father’s ashes at sea, and then to Vancouver for a vacation, but of course, COVID has put all of that on indefinite hold. We decided to take the week off of work anyway, and overall it was a nice week, though more boring than our usual…
