TiVo Alert ~ San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker
We were fortunate enough to catch an encore performance of San Francisco Ballet’s Nutcracker yesterday. It was beautiful and really, really well done. I looked on our local PBS website, and there’s only one showing left, 2AM Tuesday morning. If you have a chance, record it. You won’t be disappointed, even though the Nutcracker Prince has a mask that looks a bit too much like the Burger King for my taste. It was filmed last year, and is distributed this year via Great Performances. Of course, there’s a DVD available for the ballet lovers out there. Enjoy. It’s gorgeous.

Thankful
My plan for today’s blog was to make a Thursday 13, and list 13 things for which I am thankful. Family, friends, our health, having a job, good elections, etc. etc. As so often happens, though, life got in the way. Let me tell you what happened. Ted and I use WordPress to maintain our blogs. Ted’s really good about updating his blog to the most current version of WordPress, but often the update comes with a small hand full of problems. There will be something new that he has to tweak, and it takes time, and blah blah blah. Me? I’m more the “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix…

Champagne Turkey Recipe
When I moved to San Francisco in 1987, I worked at a big hotel as a front desk clerk. Since I had no seniority, I had to work both Thanksgiving and Christmas days. My roommate, Troy, worked at another hotel (though he later left and came to work at the same hotel as me). He had the pleasure of working the ‘graveyard’ shift, so he was usually asleep while I was at school or work, and I was asleep while he was at work. Troy was a pretty darned good cook, and on Thanksgiving Day, while I was working, he cooked a delicious Thanksgiving meal for me and some of…

Thank-You
Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that…

Happy Diwali!
From Wikipedia: While Diwali is popularly known as the “festival of lights”, a more appropriate significance is “the new year of luck and wealth”. Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light, in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one’s true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atman…

Happy New Year!
(image found here) It’s Rosh Hashanah, (unless you’re Ted, and then it’s Rush Hashanah), which is the New Year according to the Jewish Calendar. I’ve made the impulsive decision to make my New Year’s resolution now rather than in January, because there are a couple of things I need to work on, and there’s no time like the present, right? I don’t generally go in for New Year’s Resolutions, actually, but this year, I feel the need. So. Here goes. 1. Floss. I know, I should have been doing this all along, but I haven’t been. I don’t enjoy flossing, and I don’t get much tartar on my teeth, so…

How to waste a day…
It’s 8:30 P.M., and god, I’ve been watching a stupid 90210 marathon ALL.DAY. They’re just now getting to Season 4. What a loss of a day. So, here’s what I have accomplished today: 1. Walked dog. 1.5 Watched the workers tear down one of our car ports (we live in a condo complex), which was hit by a drunk driver last night, smashing it up and causing stupid amounts of damage. 2. Made baigan choka with the eggplant Cherry left me. 3. Went to pick up curried lamb and rice to go with the baigan choka. 4. Watched episode after episode of 90210. Can I tell you what a waste…

Who Put the Labor in Labor Day?*
We did, that’s who. When I think of labor day, my mind first thinks of the end of summer…the crisp fall weather on the horizon, the cool weather clothes, school starting up again, the return of the good TV shows… Then there are the Labor Day celebrations…one last bbq of summer, maybe a trip to the beach, the lake, or the shore… For some people it is a chance to get caught up with some chores around the house, to enjoy a 3-day weekend by sleeping in one extra day, maybe see some friends. I agree with all of these things. Not a thing wrong with any of them. But…

Happy Independence Day, Everyone
Does anyone else remember this little April Fools Joke that ran in the newspapers back in 1996? I remember it because my mom was visiting us, and Maya had just been born (March 29), and we were looking at the newspaper, and Mom got all outraged. I wonder if it was sleep deprivation, due to all of the excitement, or if perhaps the fact of being in such a historic city got the blood all of her patriot ancestors flowing freely, but she decided this was just too much. And to think, George Bush wasn’t even in office yet! Anyway, she was talking to my dad on the phone, and…

Licorice Day!
Today, April 12, is National Licorice Day! Who knew? As a matter of fact, you may wonder how I know this factoid. Well, I went over to Chrissy’s blog, where I saw the pile of candy that she won, and spied in that enviable pile a Bit O’ Honey. I remember Bit O’ Honey being made by the Ward Candy Company, because my maiden name was Ward, and I used to imagine that it was MY company, or maybe my Grandpa’s company, and I would be able to invent all kinds of groovy candy, ala Willy Wonka. Well, Nestle bought the company at some point, and I felt a little…

Happy Valentime’s* Day!
Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone, but especially most of all to my beloved Py. Can you believe this is our 20th V-Day together? I remember the first one…roses, chocolate covered strawberries, and champagne. It was a good day, and every one since that has been better than the last, because it means it’s longer that we’ve been together. I love you so very much. *Inside joke. Kinda like, ‘Can you borrow me a pencil?”
