Holidays

  • Thank-You

Whereas the 11th of November 1918, marked the cessation of the most destructive, sanguinary, and far reaching war in human annals and the resumption by the people of the United States of peaceful relations with other nations, which we hope may never again be severed, and Whereas it is fitting that the recurring anniversary of this date should be commemorated with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding between nations; and Whereas the legislatures of twenty-seven of our States have already declared November 11 to be a legal holiday: Therefore be it Resolved by the Senate (the House of Representatives concurring), that…

  • Happy Diwali!

From Wikipedia: While Diwali is popularly known as the “festival of lights”, a more appropriate significance is “the new year of luck and wealth”. Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Diwali is the celebration of this Inner Light, in particular the knowing of which outshines all darkness (removes all obstacles and dispels all ignorance), awakening the individual to one’s true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With the realization of the Atman…

  • Happy New Year!

(image found here) It’s Rosh Hashanah, (unless you’re Ted, and then it’s Rush Hashanah), which is the New Year according to the Jewish Calendar.  I’ve made the impulsive decision to make my New Year’s resolution now rather than in January, because there are a couple of things I need to work on, and there’s no time like the present, right?  I don’t generally go in for New Year’s Resolutions, actually, but this year, I feel the need. So.  Here goes. 1. Floss.  I know, I should have been doing this all along, but I haven’t been.  I don’t enjoy flossing, and I don’t get much tartar on my teeth, so…

  • How to waste a day…

It’s 8:30 P.M., and god, I’ve been watching a stupid 90210 marathon ALL.DAY.  They’re just now getting to Season 4.  What a loss of a day. So, here’s what I have accomplished today: 1. Walked dog. 1.5  Watched the workers tear down one of our car ports (we live in a condo complex), which was hit by a drunk driver last night, smashing it up and causing stupid amounts of damage. 2. Made baigan choka with the eggplant Cherry left me. 3.  Went to pick up curried lamb and rice to go with the baigan choka. 4. Watched episode after episode of 90210.  Can I tell you what a waste…

  • Who Put the Labor in Labor Day?*

We did, that’s who. When I think of labor day, my mind first thinks of the end of summer…the crisp fall weather on the horizon, the cool weather clothes, school starting up again, the return of the good TV shows… Then there are the Labor Day celebrations…one last bbq of summer, maybe a trip to the beach, the lake, or the shore… For some people it is a chance to get caught up with some chores around the house, to enjoy a 3-day weekend by sleeping in one extra day, maybe see some friends. I agree with all of these things. Not a thing wrong with any of them. But…

  • Happy Independence Day, Everyone

Does anyone else remember this little April Fools Joke that ran in the newspapers back in 1996?  I remember it because my mom was visiting us, and Maya had just been born (March 29), and we were looking at the newspaper, and Mom got all outraged. I wonder if it was sleep deprivation, due to all of the excitement, or if perhaps the fact of being in such a historic city got the blood all of her patriot ancestors flowing freely, but she decided this was just too much.  And to think, George Bush wasn’t even in office yet!  Anyway, she was talking to my dad on the phone, and…

  • Licorice Day!

Today, April 12, is National Licorice Day! Who knew? As a matter of fact, you may wonder how I know this factoid. Well, I went over to Chrissy’s blog, where I saw the pile of candy that she won, and spied in that enviable pile a Bit O’ Honey. I remember Bit O’ Honey being made by the Ward Candy Company, because my maiden name was Ward, and I used to imagine that it was MY company, or maybe my Grandpa’s company, and I would be able to invent all kinds of groovy candy, ala Willy Wonka. Well, Nestle bought the company at some point, and I felt a little…

  • Happy Valentime’s* Day!

Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone, but especially most of all to my beloved Py. Can you believe this is our 20th V-Day together? I remember the first one…roses, chocolate covered strawberries, and champagne. It was a good day, and every one since that has been better than the last, because it means it’s longer that we’ve been together. I love you so very much. *Inside joke. Kinda like, ‘Can you borrow me a pencil?”

  • 365 days until my birthday! (or, 0 days until my birthday!)

I saw this meme back in November, over at Josey’s blog.  I decided to save it for my birthday. And just right when you’re still feeling kinda puny from being sick, and though the stomach flu has left you, you now seem to be enjoying a chest cold during vacation. Sigh. what do to: Pick your birth month. Bold the 5-10 traits that best apply to you. Copy to your own blog, with all twelve months. JANUARY: Stubborn and hard-hearted. Ambitious and serious. Loves to teach and be taught. Always looking at people’s flaws and weaknesses. Likes to criticize. Hardworking and productive. Smart, neat and organized. Sensitive and has deep…

  • Merry Sickmas!

(disgusting but sadly appropriate graphic found here) We’re home from Portland, and I must say, it was a mixed bag of a vacation. We arrived on Saturday evening, and my poor dad was feeling fine, but then not so fine, and by the end of the evening he had all of the oh-so-fun symptoms of either stomach flu or food poisoning. Yay. We all hoped for food poisoning (so it would go away quickly, and so no one else would get sick), and washed our hands a lot. Too bad, it was stomach flu, and the good news kept coming in. My sister, brother-in-law, and niece had a variation (though…

  • Merry Christmas!

This is Maya at about 9 months old. Laluna had Santa come to see Chee and Big Sis, and Maya was there as well, and got a peek. She had a lot of stranger anxiety, so I’m surprised she let this even happen. We’re off to Portland now, back on the 27th, so no bloggy-blog from me for a few days. 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, and that it is filled with laughter, family, and yummy food.

  • Thanks!

Look what the Hanukkah Armadillo brought to our house earlier this week!  Now how did he know that there’s a writers strike and nothing on TV and gosh, we’re pathetic and love us some 90210 fun?  Thanks, Hanukkah Armadillo!
