Links of Love
(This picture is of Shrimp Paulista, the last link of love today…enjoy!)
Once in awhile, it’s fun to point people to some blog posts that they might not otherwise see…so, because I love you all, here are a few that I enjoyed this week (and maybe one or two from last week…):
Py Korry bought a fancy space-age type turntable and rooted through our album collection, starting a new feature on his blog called “I could give a rip”, in which he rips a hard-to-find song from LP to MP3 and uploads it for your downloading pleasure. The debut song is one of my old school faves, “Some Girls”, by Belouis Some.
Flea over at One Good Thing had a contest for stories of the most humiliating child. I won the award for my mom, by telling the neighborhood things they probably didn’t want to know. But you should go check out the stories…some of them are really funny. Some adult content, so be warned. OK, LOTS of adult content.
Shark-Fu over at Angry Black Bitch tells a story of her brother and some pizza. This is a good read, and reminded me of why it’s so important to have family in your life. Whether you’re related to them by blood or not (she is…but for some folks, their friends are their family, and that’s groovy, too). A few days later, she reminded us why nuclear power might not be the best way to go…
Sognatrice at Bleeding Espresso has a mighty yummy looking use for pesto, and a yummy pesto recipe to boot! Ted and Maya like their pesto in small doses, not so much a big bowl of pesto on pasta, so this might be the answer to how to enjoy it in our house.
Jill at Brilliant at Breakfast made me kinda want to vote for Elizabeth Edwards for president.
Lotus at An Anthropoligt Wannabe got me thinking about ‘dark tourism’, where one vacations to places that aren’t necessarily cheerful and bright, but more along the lines of concentration camps and such. I think it’s important to teach your children of the dark side of the world, especially older children, and not make them think the world is just Disneyland and Waterworld. I think it’s important to remind ourselves of these facts sometimes as well (as if the news didn’t remind us every damn day…) When on our honeymoon, we stopped at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. It was a grim reminder of man’s inhumanity to man.
Ms. Mamma has a poignant story of cleaning out her cabinet, including letters written to her then-still-alive brother.
All you Harry Potter fans should go check out Rockstar Mommy, who has a couple of theories of her own about how the 7th book will end. I pretty much lost interest in the books in the first 1/4 of book 5, so I’ll probably never read 6 or 7 and will stick with the movies. But after reading her theories, I feel kinda caught up.
Wendy had a great post about lessons learned the hard way…and memories triggered by scent. The girl can turn a phrase, I’ll say that much.
Outside of the blogisphere, if you’re interested in romantic comedies, and how they’ve changed since the 1930s, you might find this New Yorker article interesting. Kind of long, but a worthwhile read nonetheless. David Denby discusses the new comedy, Knocked Up, in relation to the great romances of the 30s, and beyond.
Woke up this morning to a small earthquake. For those of you who don’t live in earthquake country, here’s what we do when an earthquake wakes us up…lie there in bed and try to determine if it’s going to get worse. Yes? Get in the doorway. Make sure Maya’s in her doorway. Go to her doorway if it’s safe to do so. Not getting worse? Think about going back to sleep, but decide it would be better to go to the bathroom first, since I’m awake anyway. Have Maya come and check on me. Tuck her back in bed. Go back to own bed. Think about how a year or two ago, she would have asked to climb in our bed for the rest of the night, but didn’t this time. Not sure how I felt about that. Go back to sleep.
Lastly, if you’re not sure what to make for dinner tonight, we tried a yummy new shrimp recipe last night, Shrimp Paulista. It’s shrimp, lime, garlic, and cilantro, with a touch of red pepper. Pair with rice and a veggie or salad, and Friday night dinner is DONE. 🙂

That’s a whole lotta love! 🙂
You know, I’m kind of hot and cold on the whole Harry Potter hype, but I think I’m going to check out RSM’s post.

Thanks for the link love – I am glad you enjoyed it – It felt good writing it 🙂

Aw shucks, thanks so much for the link love! And I do hope you get to enjoy pesto more often 😉

Wow, these links will keep me reading all weekend I think. I’ve never been to many of those blogs, so maybe I’ll gain some new favorites, thanks!
Gina
We’ve had two earthquakes this week, although both were about 2.6.
And did you know that you aren’t supposed to stand under the doorway anymore? You are supposed to get under something big and heavy like a sturdy table or desk. Away from glass, of course.

I like this! It’s fun and interesting to read blogs I’m unfamiliar with.
Shrimp recipe looks very yummy!

I heard about the earthquake on the radio and immediately I thought of you. I was so relieved to see that you had posted today and weren’t affected.
Thanks for the recipe and that Eating Well website is neat! I love quick and easy with simple, everyday ingredients. I’ll have to try it soon.

Gina…no more doorways? Dang it all, because we don’t have anything big and heavy upstairs to get under. So I guess we’re sticking with doorways for now.
I used to work with a man who was in the Northridge earthquake, and the lesson he took from it was to keep slippers by your bedside, because if there’s a big one, there WILL be glass on the floor. Of course, we had no glass on our floor after the ’89 earthquake in SF, but still, it’s a good lesson anyway. 🙂
Shelliza, thanks for your concern. 🙂 It was a tiny little one, kind of like a category 2 storm must feel to you in the tropics. Enough that you notice and pay attention, not much more.
Autumn's Mom
Heard about the earthquake..we are further north and I guess not near any faults so we typically don’t feel them. I didn’t know about the doorways either. shoot.
I’m trying to stay away from any kind of hype before reading the last book tomorrow. Yes, I am a nerd and I’m pretty sure I’m going to work in the morning and read harry the rest of the day. Cuz I don’t want to stay away from the internet too long! I might miss something good.
Jess
You rock for posting these. I laughed hysterically at Flea’s contest over at one good thing. “Hey, what’s in the box?”
Oh my. Whew.
J
Jess, I think it was the jellybean story that made me want to link to it, which is what started this whole post! HA!

We had an earthquake?

When I heard the earthquake news this morning, I wondered about you. All is well it seems. Interesting observation about how Maya is taking such things in stride now.

That shrimp dish looks wonderful! I will puruse the blogs you mentioned. 🙂

Hey Jules!
Oh my gosh, YUM… does THAT look good!
I’ll be right over on the next flight.
…not sure if you’ve caught wind of it yet, but I’m not the exactly best cook around town here…
to be honest, I have 911 on speed dial and two local fire departments on payroll.
So I’ll admire your pics… from a distance, and call it good.

Gee J, that was cool reading those blogs, I loved the funny children stories.

I lost interest reading the harry potters as well and kept up with the movies instead… they make these movies so fast, I can barely catch up with the sequels.
The shrimp looks deeee-lish!!

Your earthquake drill sounds quite familiar. My first reaction (up until 1989 anyhow) was ho hum.
We didn’t feel your latest quake here. Sometimes we do, sometimes not.

That shrimp looks scrumptious!

Hi, J! Thanks a bunch for the mention, also, it’s real nice of you to give us the heads up on so many cool links. Going to check them out now, thanks!
