Throwback Thursday – Normandy
We stopped at Omaha Beach when we were in Normandy last June, a few days before the anniversary. Not the best pictures, to be sure, but they do capture a bit of what it is like there.
The sculpture is ‘Les Braves’, by Anilore Banon. From NormandyWarGuide.com, it consists of three elements:
The Wings of Hope
So that the spirit which carried these men on June 6th 1944 continues to inspire us, reminding us that together it is always possible to change the future.
Rise, Freedom!
So that the example of those who rose against barbarity, helps us remain standing strong against all forms of inhumanity.
The Wings of Fraternity
So that this surge of brotherhood always reminds us of our responsibility towards others as well as ourselves. On June 6th 1944 these men were more than soldiers, they were our brothers.

I’ve been watching the national news this week and their coverage of the D-Day commemoration. I’ve never seen this sculpture even once. It’s quite dramatic!

I’m glad I posted it then! I haven’t been watching at all, but have heard coverage on NPR. Most of the beach was in preparation mode, fences and trucks and so on, since we were there 2 days before the anniversary. But I did like the sculpture, and the flags, and the school kids doing what school kids do.

Thanks Ben! I don’t know why I expected it to be anything but a quiet beach, but I’ll admit to being a bit surprised. I mean, there were markers and memorials all around, but it’s still a beach. I love the ocean, esp when it is cool and cloudy. It was a lot of driving, to see it, but it was lovely nonetheless.

This sculpture is in keeping with the historical drama and daily waves of that beach. Great photo of it and the kids– who I also think are in keeping with the beach. Life goes on, energized by youth.
