We walk by this on one of our regular weekend walks, and every single time, I think it says, “DONUT STAND” which does not make sense, as it is just plywood over a hole in the ground. Clearly whomever painted on the wording needed to learn to put a space in there so it would read “DO NOT STAND”, What did you see? Are you suddenly craving donuts? Or doughnuts? For me, this sign specifically makes me want a plain cake doughnut.

I saw DO NOT STAND. Perhaps because I have been anti-doughnut (or donut) for years and years, so I don’t look for the word or crave the thing itself.

I like these sorts of bossy signs that order you around with random and general directives. Are you supposed to drop to your knees as soon as you see it? Is it to prevent loitering? Must you hurry on by so that you don’t linger even a moment and break its rule?

    So crabby.

So far it’s just me then…perhaps because I love doughnuts. How can anyone be anti-doughnut? I mean, I haven’t EATEN one in several years, but gosh, they are a delicious treat once in awhile.

I wonder, before they painted the bossy sign, were people standing on the plywood? Did someone fall? Or were they thinking ahead KNOWING someone would want to stand on it, or perhaps even jump on it…but it doesn’t say DONOT JUMP so maybe that would be allowed? (I like the bossiness of it too…)

Perhaps its just me then? When I see it, what I first picture is a little donut stand, like a lemonade stand, with neighborhood children selling donuts for a little pocket money. Either they sold all of their donuts and went home, or they were disheartened because, like Nance, too many folks were anti-donut, so they couldn’t sell them. They broke up their little donut stand in a frustrated rage, and went home. This is all that remains.
