Wordle Wednesday

Are you playing Wordle, the online game that’s taking the internet by storm? I’m playing, and I really like it. I like that there is only one word per day, and that everyone gets the same word. It seems gentle to me, sort of like “The Great British Baking Show” (or Bake Off, if you’re somewhere where that term isn’t copyrighted).

If you’re not playing, and you like puzzles, you might give it a try. It’s sort of like Mastermind, sort of like Hangman. You try to guess the 5-letter word of the day in 6 tries. You cannot use random letters, they have to be words. The yellow squares mean right letter, wrong place. Grey squares mean no, this letter is not in the word. And green letters mean right letter, right place. So far I generally seem to be getting 4/6, though today was 5/6. I haven’t yet gotten a 2 or a 3, and of course a 1 would be pure luck.

The other day I was in the car and I thought of the word MELON, and I wondered if that might be the word the next day. I thought about how if the word were MELON, but I did not guess it, no one would believe me that I had thought of it and not used it. What a silly thing to think about, but I did. I remembered my silly thought the next day, and guess what? It wasn’t MELON. All grey squares. At least it told me what letters were NOT in the word. I think that day’s word was SUGAR. I got it in 4 tries.

If you are playing, are you enjoying it? If not, give it a try, see if it gives you a moment or two of joy.

Note that the screenshot above is not my guess, I got it on an image search. In case someone is playing today’s Wordle and hasn’t played yet, I didn’t want to ruin it for you.

I’ve heard about it, of course, since everyone is talking or posting about it everywhere. It’s almost exactly like the game Jotto, which I’ve played on my phone for ages. I haven’t yet played Wordle, but thank you for including the link. I’ll try it out. I did hear on some news/talk show segment, that a tip for Wordle is to start with the word ARISE since it contains the most commonly used letters and vowels.

It’s so cold and icy here that I’m stuck indoors. I’ll take any diversion, so thank you.

I’ve never heard of Jotto…just went and looked it up, and it does sound very similar to Wordle. Maybe that was the inspiration?

I’m sorry it’s cold and icy there. Weather patterns being what they are, that means it’s stupidly beautiful here. There were rumors of rain next week to start February, but they appear to have melted away. I suspect that means more crummy weather for you. I’m sorry.

I’m playing Wordle, but the limit of one game per day bums me. If I bother to show up to play a game somewhere online, I want to play for a while not a few minutes.

I am playing too! The first few days just made my brain hurt but I’m getting better. It still usually take me five tries, but better than all six I suppose. My son usually gets them in three, I’m jealous lol!

I have yet to get a 3 or less, which is frustrating. Oh well, maybe if I use ‘ARISE’ as my first word, rather than whatever word I fall asleep thinking might be it, I will have better luck.
