TV Shows I Tried, but Couldn’t Get Into
For my 13th Thursday 13, I thought I would confess some of the TV shows that I have watched, or TRIED to watch, but just couldn’t get into over the last several years. Yes, there are gratuitous Buffy references, when obviously, Buffy does not belong on this list. So sue me.
1. Desperate Housewives. I tried a few episodes, and I liked it at the beginning, but when Terri Hatcher’s character got stuck outside naked in the bushes, I just thought it was too dumb, and stopped watching.
2. Grey’s Anatomy. Everyone loves this show, and maybe I should have tried another season, but we rented season one, and found ourselves much too bored by the idea of watching even one more episode, so we sent it back without even seeing all of the episodes on disc one. Too boring, too soap opera-ish. Don’t hate me.
3. American Idol. Um, whatever. Couldn’t care less about this show. Every time I try to watch it, I just think I’d rather have my teeth cleaned or something.
4. The L Word. Who knew that lesbian TV love could be just as boring and dumb as hetero TV love? Equality in yawn-dom.
5. The Sopranos. Same as number 4. Boring. And I didn’t LIKE any of the characters. I wanted to identify with someone a little bit. Blech.
6. How I Met Your Mother. This is a goofy little sitcom. I wanted to like it, because Willow from Buffy is on it. No, still not worth it.
7. Angel. If you loved Buffy, you were supposed to love Angel. Nope. See, the cool thing about Buffy was that she was this tiny little girl, looks like she couldn’t open a jar by herself, and she KICKED ASS. A vampire running a detective agency? Yawn. Then again, I never really liked Angel’s character on Buffy either. He annoyed me.
8. Firefly. Another show by the maker of Buffy. Sorry, I tried, but I couldn’t get into it. Boring, and really, I’m not that into sci-fi, and not at all into westerns so, yeah. Yawn.
9. Will and Grace. I have watched a few episodes of this, and it was funny enough, but never good enough to make me not change the channel or anything. And the longer it was on, the more annoying I found it. The only time I laughed at that show was once when Will said, “What is your damage, Heather”. That was funny.
10. 24. OK, this is kind of a lie. I LOVED this show the first season. It was on right after Buffy, and boy, Tuesday was the best night on TV. We watched it the second season, too, but pretty much lost interest, and haven’t gone back.
11. Alias. I tried to like this. Cool girl kicking butt, you know. Couldn’t get into it. There’s really only one Buffy. (Like how I have mentioned my fav show 4 times in this list, and it’s clearly not even ON this list? Sad, isn’t it?)
12. Charmed. Sorry Dot. I tried. I wanted to like it, because I love a good Shannen Doherty soap show, but sadly, couldn’t make it stick.
13. Rescue Me. Ted likes this show, and when he remembers to watch it, he’s pretty into it. It’s well done, but maybe just a bit too gritty for me. These people have pain in their lives like no one else you know (I hope!). What else could you expect, I guess, from a show about firefighters in post September 11th New York City?
In case you’ve been living under a rock, and have never checked out Television Without Pity, that’s where the links go. It’s fun to go and read what they think of your favorite shows, and when I was in full-on addict mode with Buffy, I spent way too much time there. I’m guessing they don’t do sitcoms, so there’s no recaps for “How I Met Your Mother” or “Will and Grace“, and I’m not sure why they don’t have anyone watching “The L Word“. Maybe it’s just too boring for anyone to handle at TWoP? Probably that’s it.

Most of the shows you listed is the reason I stopped watching TV so much. Pretty boring, bad, can’t get into it type of thing.

I’m with you on your list, but I would add Studio 60. Why doesn’t this show grab me?

I haven’t been able to get into Despertate Housewives, Angel, Firefly, Alias, and 24 either. I only watch American Idol when they are auditioning for talent. After they’ve found the “talent” I stop watching because it isn’t funny anymore. 🙂

I watch all of the first three, although Desperate Housewives I am no so very into. I can sort of take it or leave it.
I have a hard time getting into most sitcoms- Two and a Half Men leaves me cold.
“Arrested Development” was the last true comedy I watched on a regular basis.

You know I forgive you about Charmed. Me and Autumn still are watching re-runs. I watch DH but it can get pretty dumb. Grey’s Anatomy I am just hooked on!
PY, I stopped watching Studio 60. I’m so disappointed b/c I really wanted to like it.

Great list. I liked Charmed and Will & Grace, but the others I’ve never even seen. You get an award for even trying to watch them.

The only one on your list that I do like is American Idol. Hubby and I just dig it…..especially at the beginning.
As for the rest, they can take them off the tube and I would never miss them!
My T13 is up, hope you will visit.

Many of these I never even tried, but otherwise I agree with you on everything but Firefly. But then, I will watch a lot of science fiction just because it is science fiction. I also like Studio 60 — you have to stop wanting it to be West Wing or Sports Night. And it was better this week.

I have never heard of Firefly, so I totally agree with you on that one!
This season of Grey’s Anatomy has me hooked, and I watched Charmed a few years back but don’t even know if its still on now, and I really enjoyed Will and Grace when it first started, but my attention for it waned but I still kept up on the story line via reruns.
All the others, can be done away with.
And PY – I have mr Tivo recording Studio 60 but I’ve only seen one episode. Perhaps I’ll watch them someday (you know after they cancel it and I love it and I’ll be sad).

I’m a big Gray’s Fan. I’m enjoying some new shows this year though: Hero’s, The Unit, and Ugly Betty in addition to Lost which I can’t miss.

I’m really not much of a TV person, the only show on your list that I’ve watched (thanks to my two daughters) is American Idol.

I like about 4-6 of the shows on your list, I think they are great. I think you have to have a certain type of sense of humor just to like somethings. Like 40 Year Old Virgin for example, I was told it was funny. Who’s idea is it that it was funny, it was the dumbest SO NOT FUNNY movie I have ever seen. Yes, I know we are talking TV shows but it was the only example I could think of right now. As long as they keep coming up with some good things for everyone, we should all have some TV shows we like. Oh, and New York got sent home again on Flavor of Love, ha ha witch-o-rama, that is what you get.

Well, I’m a complete Grays Anatomy fan, I’ll admit it. Far from boring, in my mind. And I’ve been enjoying Studio 60 too. I enjoyed Will and Grace, as well as charmed, though I wouldn’t say I was an avid fan. The others I haven’t tried, though god knows I will never try reality tv–the commercials alone make me gag. My new favorite show is the Julia Lewis-Dreyfus one–now THAT’s a sit com.

Fun list!
I’m totally feeling jealous that you changed your blog location because Blogger is having a scheduled outage right now, and I haven’t been able to upload a photo through Blogger all day today. I had to send it to my blog via flickr. Blogging shouldn’t be so complicated!

I’ve gotten so much shit for not liking Will and Grace. Personally I found them dam annoying. They could have done a better show by calling it Jack and Karen and losing the other two. Also, Friends. I know I’m alone on this, but i just stopped caring after season two.
On your list, I love Grey’s Anatomy and I loved Charmed and Alias, which are both off now. Oh but I never like Buffy, sorry.
You know which new one i love is Brother’s and Sisters even though I thought I may not like it.

Those are shows I cannot get into either. They are so popular and I hear people talking about some of those at work. Maybe, I should give them a try, it is the new season so maybe they are better. What do you think?
Wendy
How can we be friends? lol! I love Grey’s and Sopranos and 24 but i am totally with you on the rest!
