The Wedding People
The Wedding People ~ Alison Espach
A suicidal woman (Phoebe) checks in to a lovely resort hotel determined to have a wonderful meal in the beautiful dress she bought but has never had occasion to wear, before ODing on feline pain medication. She is mistaken for a wedding guest at a destination wedding, a wedding that is going to take a week and has booked the rest of the hotel. She ends up talking to the bride (Lila), who asks her which family she is with, and Phoebe tells Lila that no, she is not here for the wedding. She is here to kill herself.
I found this book to be completely predictable and yet very enjoyable. Like any good rom-com, I knew what was coming, and I was there to see how we get from point a to point b. I won’t say any more, except that it was a fun read with some tender depth included. Recommended.
What’s with all the book reviews? I’m participating in NaBloPoMo this month, writing a post a day. I decided that I would write about the books that I have read this year. For more NaBloPoMo participants, check out San’s list.

EVERYBODY has liked this book, and I have a library hold on it. Last time I checked I was something like 350 in line, so I’ll be waiting for a while. But I’ll read it eventually.
J
My wait list was long too, though not as long as that. Somehow I got it early. Our library has a feature where if your loan comes available and you aren’t ready for it, you can let someone jump ahead of you in line. If this happens with enough people, you can jump way ahead. That’s what happened for me. 🙂

I agree with Jenny. Everyone has liked this book. I’m glad you liked it too. I’ll see if I can fit it in between my book club ‘assignments’.
J
It was a good read!

I really loved this book and gave it 5 stars. It’s a lighter book but also had some heavier/thoughtful commentary around marriage/infertility/etc. It was just what I needed when I read it this summer.
J
Agreed, it was light in ways, but not total fluff.

I am in the same boat as Jenny; I have had it on hold for AGES!! I am sure I will like it, given the rave reviews, but I need to be patient!
J
Hang in there. Likely next year we’ll be reading about it on your blog, when you finally get it.

Ok, what I got from this is that people can die from OD-ing on pet pain meds… how did I not make that connection earlier?! I have pet meds casually lying around in the guest bathroom and must go fix that right away!
I’m glad Phoebe does not die and finds love (I’m guessing)!
J
I think it’s a safe guess Maya! Put those pet meds away.
Alexandra
Oh, will you look at that, I’ve had this one on order at the library for ages and will probably end up buying the paperback to read it. A friend said she loved it and that it touched her. How funny everyone has heard something good and wants to read it.
J
It’s a good read, I hope you enjoy it!

The waitlist at our library is SOOOO long but I am determined to wait 🙂
J
You will be happy when you finally get it, though you will have forgotten everyone that recommended it probably.

I will look at my local library for this one. Love romance.
J
I hope you find it!

OD on feline pain medication! LOL. But, then, hopefully there wasn’t a feline being abandoned, right? (Just tell me that no cats were harmed in this book.)
J
There is good news and bad news here, Engie. Her cat passes away, and she is left with the pain killers. But the cat was not harmed, it died of old age I think.

This is a DEALBREAKER for me, friend. No dead pets allowed in my fiction. They all live FOREVER.
J
That’s fair. Agreed, they all need to live forever.

I think I need some rom com stuff because I’m not connecting with my latest book. “We Solve Murders.”
J
This is a fun read, Margaret!

I snagged this from the walk0in shelf at my library on Friday! Can’t wait!
J
Nice! That’s kind of how I got it, too, though I listened to it. Just a fluke because the wait was really long.

I was just going to comment saying I’m probably like 300th on the library list, but NO. I am #5! So it might be soonish that I read this, I’m excited.
J
Yay! I hope you like it!

I LOVED this book. I listend to it and it was a great listen. The book is mostly being told in Phoebe’s head so it flows off the tongue super easily. I finished it in like three days. I can’t really place what I liked about it so much, maybe just Phoebe herself and her way of looking at the world? Definitely a fun read.
J
I listened to it too, and really enjoyed it!

Oooo, I have a 12 week hold. This seems totally wait-able and shorter than some others. Looking forward to the read!
J
Absolutely doable, I hope you enjoy it when we’re almost to spring!
Coco
I fully agree with you that is predictable but still very enjoyable read. Glad you liked it too.
J
Thanks Coco!

Huh… this was not on my radar as something I would enjoy. But I think I may.
J
For a book that started with suicide, it was surprisingly fun.

Everyone raves about this book so I was really excited when it was a Book of the Month add-on this month. I couldn’t add it to my cart fast enough! I hope I love it.
J
Me too! Hard when books are so hyped, right? But I enjoyed it for sure.
