Pickney Sick

Ted and I have been fighting a cold for over a week now…Ted started getting it the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and almost lost his voice. I started getting it on Thanksgiving day, and it was mostly in my head (meaning sinus and runny nose, not that I had imagined it), but now it’s turned into a yucky cough that tortures me. Never is it the kind of cold that lays you out and keeps you home, just enough to annoy you and make you feel kind of tired and wish you weren’t sick. Until now. Yesterday, it finally caught up with Maya. She woke up feeling queasy, and didn’t want to go to school. But she was worried about getting behind in school, and asked me to go pick up her assignments. So I left her home, went to school, got her work, and then went to Safeway to pick up some things there. She called me while I was at Safeway…”Mama, I threw up.” Oh, poor Monkey. So I came home, tried to make her some breakfast, gave her some medicine, and put her back to bed. She dozed off and on, throwing up once more in the afternoon, and getting kind of feverish and chilled at one point as well.  Finally she settled down and had a 3 hour nap. Sigh.

Having a sick kid at home is OK…there is a certain something about it that means you have to slow down, forget about what else it is you’re doing, and cuddle them. But…today we were supposed to go on a field trip to Mission Dolores in San Francisco, and then over to the Presidio. I was supposed to be one of the drivers. I like driving on field trips, because it’s something new and interesting, and I enjoy it. And she’s feeling much better this morning. But we decided to play it safe, and not to risk her throwing up in the car, in the mission, or anywhere else. So we’re home today. I guess I’ll get some work done, huh? Sigh.

I hope everyone is feeling better real soon!

J, thanks for your comment today. My part is “Moosy”, VERY loosely based on the “Lucy” character from Narnia. She is a grown woman from the deep South, and she is lacking all kinds of class. My character will be a thickly accented woman with a penchant for big hair and gum-smacking.

I hate those non-descript, icky-feeling sicknesses that just slowly wash over you. But maybe the worst is over and it’s all uphill from here. Hope so. Feel better, okay?

Oh no! I’ve had it for 2 1/2 weeks now.Jjust got back from the doc and learned that it’s Bronchitis. That coughing is what wears me out. Hope you all recover soon.

What a shame about the field trip. If she’s going to be sick, have it on a days she’s been dreading for weeks.

We’ve been passing the germs back and forth around here as well.
