(Not) Wordless Wednesday
People sometimes ask what your favorite season is, and I have trouble with that one, because there are things I really like about each. Spring – rain and everything is green and flowers…Summer – great produce, listening to kids play in the pool, more relaxed vibe (at least when Maya was still in school). Autumn – changing leaves, cool crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Winter – cool, sometimes cold weather, being cozy inside when it is wet outdoors, rain, holidays.
Know what season I hate? FIRE SEASON.

I’d hate Fire Season, too. It’s sad that there even is such an established thing. To those of us in the midwest California seems like it could be paradise, but perhaps not all year round. Stay safe.

It’s really the last few years…I mean, CA has had a problem with wildfires for ages, but these last few years have been much worse, where more people have to evacuate and some lose their homes. It’s horrible. And it’s not only related to drought, because it happens when we get rain too, because we only get rain in the winter/spring. No rain in summer/fall means that everything is super dry, no matter how much water we have in our reservoirs. Of course the long drought we had recently did make trees more vulnerable to burning where once they might not have, so there is that. This recent bunch is the result of a weird storm we got last weekend. It was like being in your neck of the woods, except without any rain. Thunder and lightening. It did rain a little bit, but not enough to prevent the lightening from causing a lot of grass fires, which have taken off.
Add to that that it has been over 100 for about a week now, and everything is SUPER dry, and now the air quality is crap due to fires and ash.
On a selfish note, I am not looking forward to our electricity bill, we have had the A/C running day and night, which we generally do not do.

Rick and I have been watching the news with horror and sympathy each night as they report on the California wildfires. I wondered about you and your safety, as well as another of my Cali blogfriends. It’s such a tragedy to see all the violent loss.

Everyone I know well is safe for the moment, though Ted’s cousin is packed and ready to go if need be. I have some Facebook friends (childhood friend from Alaska that I haven’t seen in over 40 years, a couple of high school friends) that are evacuated in the Santa Cruz area. So horrible, I hope they don’t lose their homes.
The air here is shit. It finally cooled off this morning, but we will still have the a/c on all day instead of opening the windows. Puppy gets a very abbreviated walk, about like we would do if it were raining. Small problems to be sure, but I am so tired of this becoming an annual thing.
