Nonfiction Books

I’ve been looking around for a non-fiction challenge.  Anyone know of one?  I certainly don’t have the energy or nerve to host one myself, but I find these challenges very motivating, and when it comes to non-fiction, I needs me a bit of a cattle prod on my flank to get me going.  But there are a few books that I’ve been thinking about reading, and I’m waiting for a challenge to come along, maybe in 2008?

My Sister, Guard Your Veil; My Brother, Guard Your Eyes

I wrote about this book here, so I won’t go into it again, but it’s composed of essays written by Iranian women, discussing the Iranian revolution, feminism, and culture.

The Omnivore’s Dilemma

I’ve been kind of thinking of this one for awhile.  It’s pretty popular…you can buy it at my local 7-11, along with your cheetos and diet coke.  Not that I would know anything about that.  “It’s a fascinating journey up and down the food chain, one that might change the way you read the label on a frozen dinner, dig into a steak or decide whether to buy organic eggs.” ~ Publisher’s Weekly.  I wrote about this once before – but then I was writing about hearing him on the radio.  I’m still thinking I might stop off at 7-11 and pick this one up.

Woe Is I

Yes, I mentioned this book once before as well.  Again, I heard about it through a podcast of a show on NPR.  I like to read a bit about grammar, and I’ve heard this book is a keeper.  Also that the author thinks that some of the rules I chagrin are stupid, which endears her to me. 🙂

OK, that’s it…three books.  I might be able to come up with two more, if the challenge were for 5 non-fiction reads.  So, any of my book blogging friends, heard of a challenge I can join that will motivate me to put down my beloved fiction for a bit?

I don’t have a challenge for you, but I’d really like to check out two of those you mentioned: My Sister, Guard Your Veil; My Brother, Guard Your Eyes & Woe Is I.

I love to read about other cultures (currently reading The Kite Runner – yes I’m a little behind everyone else), and who couldn’t use a little brushing up on her grammar?

Looks like nobody is running a non-fiction challenge right now, but you do have the makings of a very good personal challenge.

I can’t help but think that Michael Pollan would be horrified to find his book next to Cheetos and Diet Coke. 😛

I don’t know of any challenges, but I would be happy to blow the dust off and send you the copy of the Albert Einstein biography I bought this summer. 😉

I’m currently reading “Cult of Luxury Brands”. It was sold out EVERYWHERE — in Hong Kong, in Toronto, NYC!!! Nuts! And I’m really enjoying it. It’s very informative. I don’t know if that’s your cup of tea, but thought I’ll open my bag and show you what I got.
