The Sofa ~ Wolf Alice
Ted’s the music lover in our household, but I get the benefit of hearing new music that I might not otherwise hear. This song is a gentle ear worm, and I sometimes sing it to myself when I’m doing something I don’t want to be doing (like strength training or cleaning the toilet) because what I’d rather be doing is relaxing on the sofa.
Are you a lyrics person? I like the dreamy music and the singer’s voice, but also really like the lyrics, about wanting competing things from life, and perhaps also about the expectations that the world can lay on you…and while sometimes you want to be wild and do it all, sometimes you just want to lie on the sofa watching reruns. Give it a listen.
“Hope I can accept the wild thing in me
Hope nobody comes to tame her
And she can be free
Sick of second-guessing my behavior
And what I want to be
Just let me lie here on the sofa
And put the reruns on TV
I’ll be fine, I’ll be okay
I feel kind of lucky right now and I’m not ashamed to say
I can be happy, I can be sad
I can be a bitch when I get mad
I wanna settle down, oh, to fall in love
But, sometimes, I just want to fuck
I love my life, I love my life
Sometimes, I just want to
Let me lie here on
(I could lie here all day long)
Let me lie here on the sofa
(The sofa, the sofa)
On the sofa
Sometimes, I just want to
be no one thing
(Ah, ah) the intellectual beauty queen
Didn’t make it out to California
Where I thought I might clean the slate
Feels a little like I’m stuck in Seven Sisters
North London, oh, England
And maybe that’s okay
Maybe that’s fine, I’ll be okay
I feel kind of lucky right now and I’m not ashamed to say
I can be happy, I can be sad
I can be a bitch when I get mad
I wanna settle down, oh, to fall in love
But, sometimes, I just want to fuck
I love my life, I love my life
Sometimes, I just want to
Let me lie here on
(I could lie here all day long)
Let me lie here on the sofa
(The sofa, the sofa)
On the sofa
Sometimes, I just want to
be no one thing
(Ah, ah) the intellectual beauty queen
And the wild thing
Let me lie here on
(I could lie here all day long)
Let me lie here on the sofa
(The sofa, the sofa)
On the sofa
Hope I can accept the wild thing in me
Hope nobody comes to tame her
And she can be free“

I really only hear the music. I have trouble processinig the words these days, probably a combination of hearing and brain function.

I like the melody of this song, and even if you don’t hear the words clearly, you can enjoy her voice. Though maybe it’s not enjoyable for you since you don’t hear the lyrics.

I miss out on a lot because I’m not a lyrics person. I mishear or don’t hear the words although my hearing is, I think, fine.
J
Misheard lyrics is real! Sometimes they can be pretty funny.

Oh, thank you (and Ted)! Off to give this a listen now.
I like “Blush” and “Teenage Headache Dreams” so perhaps I’ll like this too…
“stare at each other like TV” still gives me goosebumps.
Also, I heard Jewel in the store the other day, and thought of your little one :)!

I’m not really plugged in to Wolf Alice, so now I’m going to listen to the two songs you mention. <3

I love a good pop hook or lyrics that read like poetry. I do often have to look up text versions to “hear” and understand lyrics accurately/precisely bc just listening, I’ll miss them or think a word is different than it is. I was reading a review of Jensen McRae’s new album recently and the critic cited a slight issue with “lyrical oversaturation”… first time I’ve heard that term but I knew instinctively what they meant bc I do think that’s common these days, esp with the more diaristic songwriting styles. I don’t think this song suffers from that! I like it a lot.
J
I haven’t heard that term, lyrical oversaturation. Interesting, and it got me thinking.

Oooh!
I absolutely am a lyrics person, to the point that I know the lyrics to ALL THE SONGS. I mean, not this one, because I never heard it before. But lyrics stick with me for life!
J
I wonder if you will find yourself singing about your sofa now?

I listened to the song and read up on the band. Very nice!! The lead vocalist’s voice reminded me a little of Dolores O’Riordan from the Cranberries…RIP Dolores.
J
Oh, I love the Cranberries, and now that you mention it, I can hear it too.

I am most definitely not a lyrics person. I can love a song only to learn its about waeful things.
Sometimes I love a song and then suddenty grasp the lyrics and it becomes an even better song.
J
I’m a lyrics person for sure. My husband is more into the music, though he does like lyrics as well.
