Maggie
Maggie; or A Man and A Woman Walk into a Bar ~ Katie Yee
The unnamed protagonist of Maggie has a lot going on. She has two small children, her husband no longer loves her and is moving in with his new girlfriend, Maggie, and our protagonist has cancer. In honor of her husband’s girlfriend, she names her tumor ‘Maggie’.
This book had some funny moments, and it was poignant in its own way, but mostly I felt like it skimmed the surface too much, and I never really felt engaged with the protagonist. I found her behavior to be somewhat ridiculous and unrealistic. For a quick listen, it was fine, but it ended pretty abruptly and was overall a meh. Recommended? I won’t say that I would try to talk someone out of reading it, like I would My Sister’s Keeper or A Little Life. But no, I wouldn’t recommend it. For once I remember where I heard of this book, so I will tell you that Nicole felt very differently than I did. Your mileage may vary.

I did love it! Hahaha books can hit us all so differently.

I loved the premise, and that she named her tumor after his mistress. It just didn’t hit right I guess.

I do plan to read this one but it’s good to go in with expectations that it might not work for me!
J
I hope you love it like Nicole did!

I’m expecting to have this conversation at Book Club in December. I’ll probably be the only one in the group who hated “My Friends.” There are books that I loved that other people didn’t like. We all have different tastes.
J
Exactly! I’ve never been part of a book club, but for Engie’s book club, the feedback has been pretty varied.

I’ll probably pass on this, and I appreciate your perspective. There are a ton of books out there right now that I’d like to read, so not gonna bother. It is true though that to each their own.
J
There are a lot of books, and not a ton of time, right?
Ernie
And not a lot of time- exactly!

The premise sounds amusing and heart wrenching, but I don’t know if it calls to me.
J
I loved the premise.

Another book I think I could not read. Also something I think I wouldn’t do. IDK. I think I’d like to protect myself from further hurt?
J
Probably not the best book for you, Maya. I could totally see myself naming my tumor over the other woman though! Especially if egged on by certain of my IRL friends. LOL.

I love that she named her tumor after the girlfirend – that alone might temp me to read it!
J
That is what tempted me for sure!

Well, glad I can move past this one since I just have too much to read these days, no time but more sadly no brainspace to keep enganged in most books.
