Idaho? No thanks.

Not to lump a whole state into one nutty town, but I’m thinking no. Has anyone read about this news story? Here’s the gist. The tiny town of Greenleaf Idaho has passed a law that residents “who do not object on religious or other grounds…keep a gun in the home.” What? OK, don’t worry, all you have to do is object on any grounds you want to be exempt from this law, so it’s pretty much gutless. But what is the reason behind this law? “…citizens should be armed in case Greenleaf, which sits on high ground, is overrun by refugees in a Katrina-like flood.” Get that? Because when your neighbors are destitute by an earthquake or a flood, and need refuge, the best instinct is to be ready to shoot them. Nice, huh? How many of you think that the pictures of all of those black people on roofs and the rumors of crime in New Orleans had something to do with this? How many of you think that if the pictures had been of mainly WHITE folks, this town would be opening their arms, rather than arming themselves against the marauding hoards? Ironically enough, the town was named after Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier . Nice, huh?

(Sorry to use this same picture of Genevieve…but it’s the only one I have with my shotgun in it, and besides, she’s so darned cute!)

So is the idea that if you were a refugee and came to a town for help you would be violent and only held off with guns? Also, don’t most people with no objection to firearms own one anyway, why would it need to be legislated? Our town is several hundred miles from the Katrina disaster but we saw an influx of survivors and the town and its people embraced them. It is hard to enough to believe people think this way and even more so that they would be so sure of its validity to pass a law.

The idiocy of some people is just amazing.

We got a few Katrina refugees here in Juneau — and they were welcome. If more people had wished to move from the Gulf Coast to Alaska, they also would have been welcome.
