Enchanted

Monday evening we were fortunate enough to get tickets from Ted’s work for an advance screening of Enchanted, the new Disney movie. The premise of the film is that a fairy tale princess, ala Sleeping Beauty or Snow White, falls in love with her prince charming, and on the way to get married, is duped by his evil stepmother, and she finds herself in Manhattan. The fairy tale parts are in 2D animation, and the Manhattan parts are real life, with just a bit of CGI for animals and such.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Disney has a big hit on their hands this holiday season. They struck the right balance with sweet and modern, naive and somewhat jaded. The actress who played princess Giselle, Amy Adams (last seen by me in Junebug), struck the right note of zany cartoon character and real live, flesh and blood human. It was nice to see her character develop that way. For any fans of Gray’s Anatomy (or Can’t Buy Me Love), Giselle meets up with Patrick Dempsy, a single dad about to get married, but still not real clear on the romance aspect of it all. He and his daughter help Giselle out, while she patiently waits for her Prince Charming to appear and save her. And appear he does, followed by the delicious Susan Sarandon as the real life incarnation of his evil stepmother.

I confess that a few of the scenes in this movie were so charming and fun, I found myself grinning like an idiot in the theater. It was really fun. A good movie for kids of all ages..I don’t think there’s anything in there that would scare anyone over the age of maybe 4 or 5, if they are a sensitive child. If you don’t have a child, come borrow mine, because she laughed out loud throughout the film, and declared in the car on the way home that she wants to buy it as soon as it comes out on DVD. Pretty good, huh?

I’m thinking I’ll start some of my cooking for Thanksgiving tonight, including Indian  Pudding, a recipe Maya found in one of her magazines and wants to give a try this year.  Hopefully today will be a short day at work.  Yay!

    Yeah! Thanks for the heads up because this sounds like the perfect movie to take my 7 year old too. I’m also a fan of fairy tales and have a collection of fairy tale books and it sounds that this would be right up both of our cinematic allies.

    Thanks for the review – I’m glad you liked it because I really wanted it to be a good movie! I’m hoping I can persuade my 12 year old to go with me instead of her friends! Otherwise, I’m coming for Maya!! 🙂

    I was wondering about the movie. I was thinking that if they just struck the right balance it could be REALLY good. Glad to hear they did a good job.

    Wow, after your review, I’m thinking I might want to see this! You never know, with all the biases that commercial reviewers have, whether they are being straight with you. Rosie (who just turned 5!) really enjoyed seeing Shrek 3 in the theatre; maybe my sister and I can take her to this one!?!

    My daughter really wants to see this movie. I loved Amy Adams in Junebug (filmed near where I live) as well as her guest role in The Office.

    I just read an article about the movie, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it. Don’t know if my little guy will go for it though, doesn’t involve any fighting or transformers.
    I do so like the main character’s name, though. Wonder why 🙂

    My husband and I are thinking of watching this one tomorrow. I’ve been worried it would be too sappy, but your review makes me eager to see it. I think I’ll really try and push hubby in the direction of this one. Thanks so much!

    We went to see this on Saturday and like you, BOTH of us were found with big grins on our faces. So cute and did you catch the head bobble during the big bollywood-like number?
