Weekend Wrap-Up
For some reason on Friday, I woke up at 4am with Ted, and couldn’t go back to sleep when he left for work. I usually sleep until about 5:30 or 6:00 lately, so this was odd. Well, that all caught up with me at about 1:00. Luckily, since I work from home, I could take a 30 minute power nap after eating lunch, and see if that helps. It didn’t. I woke up grumpy and feeling like I had a nap hangover. So when Ted came home and said he wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner, somewhere in the city with French food, I was bitchy. I didn’t really…

Grateful Today
This morning I am feeling very grateful. Yesterday, while getting ready to start my day, I received a phone call that my father-in-law was in the hospital. We weren’t sure what was wrong with him, but he had gone in because of extreme pain and very high blood pressure. On our way out to the hospital, we found out that he needed surgery right away, to remove his gallbladder. So, there we are. He had his gallbladder removed, which had ALREADY started to turn gangrene (I had no idea it could happen that quickly!). We didn’t get to see him after the surgery, because it was later in the day,…

A Good Problem to Have
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! A couple of years ago, I was lamenting the cost of greeting cards, and that I end up paying out too much money around Mother’s Day. You see, I don’t only buy them for my mom, but for all of the “mother figures” in life, so they kind of add up. Then I stopped in my tracks, because I realized…this is not a bad problem to have. I have so many women in my life that I want to acknowledge as mother-figures, it ends up costing me some money (And I’ve tried a box of cards to save money, so I know, it doesn’t HAVE to be…

Is it a Thursday 13? Or a HNT? You be the judge.
Guess what? It’s 87 degrees here (or was last night at 6:00), and our pool is finally open! I knew there had to be a benefit to this condo livin’! So, in honor of the pool being open, and how happy that makes us all, I’ll do two posts in one day…I could play it safe and save the movie post until Friday, but I’m throwing caution to the wind! Here is my Thursday 13…13 things I’m liking right now… 1. That the pool is open! YIPPPEEE! 2. That I got a pedicure, and you get to see it. (That’s my HNT, if you hadn’t guessed) Try not to be…

Misc. Weekend Thoughts
It’s Sunday evening, downright balmy (almost 90 degrees) here, and we just finished dinner. Ted made cheese tortellini with a tomato sauce, and salad with lettuce, spinach, and pears. Mmmm. So, here’s a sort of weekend wrap up, mixed with a couple of thankfulnesses, and so on. On Friday, we went to our Parent Teacher conference at Maya’s school. The news is that she is a very good student, works hard, no problems. Good at math, good at science, good at reading, good at writing. I’m thankful for that. We know several people whose children have trouble with one subject or another, or many. Or behavioral problems, which Maya also…

Thankful Thursday 13
I’ve never done a ‘Thursday Thirteen’ before, and I’m totally NOT clear on the premise, so instead of trying to figure out the rules and make sure I do it correctly, I’ll just jump in and bungle it, ok? OK. The way I see it, forgiveness will come easily and quickly if I talk about things for which I am thankful, like I promised to do awhile ago. So, here we go: 13 Things for which I am Thankful 1. I’m thankful that my husband is easy going, and even though he wanted to go out for a nice dinner last night, went along with my desire to see a…

Small Things…
Last week I wrote a post about being thankful for the big things. I wanted to be thankful for the small things, but the big things were taking up too much of my mind. Well, I got on a tangent about health, and left another big elephant in the middle of the room, unmentioned. I’m thankful for my friends. I have always had such good friends in my life, and they have gotten me through times both sweet and sour, good and bad. I have friends that I’ve known since I was a kid, and friends I’ve met at work, and they are all dear to me and mean the…

Giving Thanks (and it’s not even November…)
One of my blog addictions is This Piece of Work (aka, POW). Yesterday, she wrote about some blessings in her life. She got this idea from Mommygoth, at What happened to my rock and roll lifestyle?. I like the idea. Seems like it’s about being thankful for the little things in life, and just talking about them on a weekly basis. Nice idea for a blog, right? For example, I can be thankful that we had the plumber come out last week, and now when I want water in the bathroom sink, I just turn the faucet, and I get water in the sink. Lovely. That kind of stuff. Not…

Rockin’ Good News!
Some of you know that my mom has had some bad luck this past year…poor health, which led to a pretty invasive surgery, and the loss of her job, all in a few months time. Well, she called me tonight, and she has a new job! YAY YAY YAY! She starts Monday. She works/lives in Juneau, Alaska, and she’ll be working somewhere where they work with teenagers to create anti-alcohol media, at least that’s how I understand the job. YAY! Tomorrow was her last day of Unemployment Eligibility, so things were about to get a lot more stressful in her neck of the woods. Now, this past 6 1/2 months…

Yay, More Cake!
For my birthday party, you saw the big beautiful white cake, below, which was SO yummy, and I wish they had cut thicker slices for everyone….but for my ACTUAL birthday, Cherry baked me this BEAUTIFUL and oh so yummy Princess Cake. 🙂 Cherry, you ROCK! So we ate cake, drank champagne, and watched some Sex and the City. Now THAT’s a good birthday.

Happy Birthday to Me!
So here I am, 40 years old…crazy. 🙂 But so far, it’s GREAT. Ted threw me an AMAZING party at Massimo’s Restaurant last night, and so many friends and family were there. It was truly great. Having a birthday right after Christmas means often that people are broke and partied out by the time your birthday comes around…Having a birthday on New Years Eve means that if you want to go out to celebrate, there is a bigger expectation that it be amazing and fun and crazy and expensive. So my birthday has always been kind of quiet and nice, but not that amazing, with the exception of a few…

Who’s Spoiled???
Maya, for getting her doll? Me, for getting a nice ‘dock’ for my iPod? Or Ted, for getting his DVDs that he requested? I’m thinking, ME. Most spoiled. That’s as it SHOULD be. 🙂

Happy Anniversary!
So 18 years ago tonight, Ted and I went on our first official “date”. We had pizza once before, but we never counted that as a date, because it was just an after school thing and we didn’t really hit it off too much…. Anyway, 18 years ago, Ted came to my house on Fulton Street in SF, and we went to a party at his friend’s house….I don’t know who the friend was, or if I actually ever met him/her, because another friend, whom we’ll call….Tim….because his name was Tim, came out and told us the party was pretty much over and we should go get a drink. So…

Singing to my baby
It’s a rainy, blustery day today, which for some reason puts me in the mood for mellow, quietish music. So I was walking the dog this morning, listening to Simon and Garfunkel on my iPod (yay!), and this song came on, “For Emily, Wherever I May Find Her”. That’s one of the songs I used to sing to Maya when she was a baby. That and “Kathy’s Song”. She used to sing along with me, in her sweet little toddler voice, well before she knew what the words meant. Then I would tuck her into her crib. I kind of miss those days sometimes. Such sweet memories. I wonder if…

Thanksgiving
I think that Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday now…interesting because I used to hate it. When I was a teen, Thanksgiving meant going to my grandparents’ house. My grandfather would criticize everyone, scold, and generally be mean. My grandmother believes that anything you cook should come from a box or a can, so the only things that were fresh and homemade were the turkey and the fruit salad. My grandma makes a mean fruit salad, and mostly that’s what I lived off of. Her turkey was SO dry, your teeth would stick together trying to chew it. The bones of the turkey would fall apart. I kid you not. The…
