Thankful Thoughts

  • Double Thursday Thirteen (Thursday 26?)

I was thinking the other day of things I would like to do if I had more money. Then I thought, that would be a good Thursday 13! So I daydreamed a bit, and started feeling kind of spoiled and selfish, and that I lead a pretty good life….so I thought of days when I had much less, and I decided to do a SECOND Thursday 13 of things I would do if I had less money. OK, so that’s TWO Thursday 13s. I considered using one this week, and saving one for next week, but next week, I’m on vacation (I know, Biff again) and I don’t know if…

Samantha 1972 – 1988 Dear Samantha, my sweet doggy love, Thank you, for letting me come into your house and watch as you gave birth to your 13 puppies… for being my ambassador when we moved – I made so many friends while taking you for walks, because they wanted to know about my dog… for jumping over trash cans (upright, even!) when I pretended you were a horse… for letting me dress you up in long frilly dresses… for sleeping in my bed and keeping me company… for defending me from the creepy cable guy that one time… for forgiving me when I treated you badly… when I bit…

  • Sweet Relief

Take a peek at this…it’s the view toward San Francisco, from the Lawrence Hall of Science in the Berkeley Hills. Maybe I’ll pull this post later, when the view changes, but right now, it’s all foggy foggy sky, which is sweet relief, and bringing cooler breezes out our way.

  • A Thankful Thursday 13

It’s been awhile since I posted 13 things I’m thankful for, and after the last couple of posts, which were pretty heavy, I thought it might be time to lighten up a bit. So here we go…13 things I’m thankful for right now. (I chose this picture because it looked so cool and inviting…not like the brown dead stuff that surrounds us in the CA summertime.) 1. It seems that it is finally, albeit SLOWLY, cooling off around here. Saturday: 111 Sunday: 115 Monday: 109 Tuesday: 108 Wednesday: 98 Thursday Forecast: 93. We’re hoping for mid-80s by Saturday. (Look what the heat did to my poor roses…) 2. Ted and…

  • Father Bob

The other day, I mentioned a poem by ee cummings, that was introduced to me by a teacher of mine, and I said I would tell you a bit about him someday. Well, today is the day. That teacher’s name was Bob Hanlon, and he was my Latin teacher, as well as my Composition in Literature teacher in High School. My first day of 9th grade, when I first saw him, all I could think was of the Beatles’ line, “I am the Walrus”, because he was kind of pale, kind of roundish, and had this big, walrus-like mustache. But the more I got to know him, the more I…

  • This Is Us*

A few nights ago, I was up watching Sex and the City DVDs, and it was the episode where Miranda and Steve get married. Miranda was saying that she didn’t want the cookie cutter wedding, didn’t want someone else’s idea of a wedding, that what she wanted was a wedding that represented them, and who they were. I liked that. I liked it, because it resonated with me. I felt like we had that, a wedding that represented us, 13 years ago today. When faced with the idea of a big white dress and a long walk down the aisle, I thought, “Well, that’s nice for other folks, but not…

  • Happy Father’s Day, Dado

I thought that maybe I could have a guest blogger today, to wish her father a very happy Father’s Day. She’s not as verbose as I am, but she loves him VERY MUCH. So, with no further delay, here’s Maya. Happy Fathers Day, Dado! I love you! You are the best! Love, Monkey

  • Weekend Wrap-Up

For some reason on Friday, I woke up at 4am with Ted, and couldn’t go back to sleep when he left for work. I usually sleep until about 5:30 or 6:00 lately, so this was odd. Well, that all caught up with me at about 1:00. Luckily, since I work from home, I could take a 30 minute power nap after eating lunch, and see if that helps. It didn’t. I woke up grumpy and feeling like I had a nap hangover. So when Ted came home and said he wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner, somewhere in the city with French food, I was bitchy. I didn’t really…

  • Grateful Today

This morning I am feeling very grateful. Yesterday, while getting ready to start my day, I received a phone call that my father-in-law was in the hospital. We weren’t sure what was wrong with him, but he had gone in because of extreme pain and very high blood pressure. On our way out to the hospital, we found out that he needed surgery right away, to remove his gallbladder. So, there we are. He had his gallbladder removed, which had ALREADY started to turn gangrene (I had no idea it could happen that quickly!). We didn’t get to see him after the surgery, because it was later in the day,…

  • A Good Problem to Have

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY! A couple of years ago, I was lamenting the cost of greeting cards, and that I end up paying out too much money around Mother’s Day. You see, I don’t only buy them for my mom, but for all of the “mother figures” in life, so they kind of add up. Then I stopped in my tracks, because I realized…this is not a bad problem to have. I have so many women in my life that I want to acknowledge as mother-figures, it ends up costing me some money (And I’ve tried a box of cards to save money, so I know, it doesn’t HAVE to be…

  • Is it a Thursday 13? Or a HNT? You be the judge.

Guess what? It’s 87 degrees here (or was last night at 6:00), and our pool is finally open! I knew there had to be a benefit to this condo livin’! So, in honor of the pool being open, and how happy that makes us all, I’ll do two posts in one day…I could play it safe and save the movie post until Friday, but I’m throwing caution to the wind! Here is my Thursday 13…13 things I’m liking right now… 1. That the pool is open! YIPPPEEE! 2. That I got a pedicure, and you get to see it. (That’s my HNT, if you hadn’t guessed) Try not to be…

  • Misc. Weekend Thoughts

It’s Sunday evening, downright balmy (almost 90 degrees) here, and we just finished dinner. Ted made cheese tortellini with a tomato sauce, and salad with lettuce, spinach, and pears. Mmmm. So, here’s a sort of weekend wrap up, mixed with a couple of thankfulnesses, and so on. On Friday, we went to our Parent Teacher conference at Maya’s school. The news is that she is a very good student, works hard, no problems. Good at math, good at science, good at reading, good at writing. I’m thankful for that. We know several people whose children have trouble with one subject or another, or many. Or behavioral problems, which Maya also…

  • Thankful Thursday 13

I’ve never done a ‘Thursday Thirteen’ before, and I’m totally NOT clear on the premise, so instead of trying to figure out the rules and make sure I do it correctly, I’ll just jump in and bungle it, ok? OK. The way I see it, forgiveness will come easily and quickly if I talk about things for which I am thankful, like I promised to do awhile ago. So, here we go: 13 Things for which I am Thankful 1. I’m thankful that my husband is easy going, and even though he wanted to go out for a nice dinner last night, went along with my desire to see a…

  • Small Things…

Last week I wrote a post about being thankful for the big things. I wanted to be thankful for the small things, but the big things were taking up too much of my mind. Well, I got on a tangent about health, and left another big elephant in the middle of the room, unmentioned. I’m thankful for my friends. I have always had such good friends in my life, and they have gotten me through times both sweet and sour, good and bad. I have friends that I’ve known since I was a kid, and friends I’ve met at work, and they are all dear to me and mean the…

  • Giving Thanks (and it’s not even November…)

One of my blog addictions is This Piece of Work (aka, POW). Yesterday, she wrote about some blessings in her life. She got this idea from Mommygoth, at What happened to my rock and roll lifestyle?. I like the idea. Seems like it’s about being thankful for the little things in life, and just talking about them on a weekly basis. Nice idea for a blog, right? For example, I can be thankful that we had the plumber come out last week, and now when I want water in the bathroom sink, I just turn the faucet, and I get water in the sink. Lovely. That kind of stuff. Not…
