  • Funk…The Good Kind…

Back in October, while listening (once again) to my beloved iPod, I learned of a group called Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.  They were featured on To the Best of Our Knowledge, and they sounded pretty interesting.  From the TTBOOK website: Sharon Jones is a black woman in her late 40s who fronts a band called the Dap-Kings. She tells Steve Paulson they make a kind of music that sounds like 60s Funk and even still record onto vinyl to get the sound they want. And of course, we hear lots of their music. I liked what Sharon had to say, about Funk, about vinyl, and I liked the sound…

  • Favorite Holiday Songs

I like Christmas music ok, but not when it’s played all day, every day, on the radio. Ugh. And I like a Hanukkah song or two, which is why I titled this, Favorite Holiday Songs, and not Favorite Christmas songs, though, really, they’re mostly Christmas songs. Sorry. And, even though I was raised atheist, and don’t really go in for Christmas being that much about Jesus, kinda think it’s more about pagans and the winter solstice, and it was coopted by the Catholic Church early on while trying to convert said pagans, blah blah blah, etc. etc., there is truly something so wonderful and hopeful about the more religious songs,…

  • 1984

I saw this on Gina’s blog. The idea is to take top 100 songs from the year you graduated from High School, bold the ones you loved, strikeout the ones you hated, and leave the others plain. I’m going to try to be honest here, and tell the truth about how I felt then, no matter how embarrassing that may be now. I mean, come on..Say Say Say? I bought the single. Sigh. 1. When Doves Cry, Prince 2. What’s Love Got To Do With It, Tina Turner 3. Say Say Say, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson 4. Footloose, Kenny Loggins (I did love the movie, though…) 5. Against All…

  • DVD Weekend…

I’m slowly renouncing my claim to her, and all that I had hoped for in the world. ~ Jules and Jim. There’s nothing like a good French film to give you poignant little tidbits like that, huh? But I’m getting ahead of myself. Friday, after going to Stockton to see my Grandma, and after the presentation I had to give on Thursday (which was really no big deal, but that didn’t stop me from getting very tense about it), I was ready to relax on the sofa and watch a good romantic comedy. Something frothy and light and sweet. Unfortunately, we watched “Must Love Dogs” instead. This film can best…

  • New Digs

Welcome to my new home. I still have some moving in to do…I’m going to try to bring over my HaloScan comments (maybe…that seems kind of daunting, actually), and then I have to go through my entire blog, post by post, categorize them, and clean up any broken pictures, that kind of thing. But I kind of thought, I would rather just move over, so I can get started. If you’re wondering WHY I moved, it was a combination of things. Blogger has a lot of problems, and I’m hoping to have better luck on my own domain here. Blogger beta has categories, but I haven’t tried it yet, so…

  • Sitcom Theme Songs I Can’t Help But Sing Along With…

This one is kind of embarrasing, but I can’t help myself. I totally ripped off the lovely Tracy at The Starshine Report, but really, I have no shame. 😉 I’ve decided to pump it up a bit for you, though, so you can watch the videos yourself, and see/hear the theme songs. Enjoy! (lost these when I   moved to WordPress.  You can go here to see them, or check them out at YouTube.) 1. The Jeffersons. I dare you not to sing along. I, too, want a piece of the pie. And remember the interracial couple next door? The black woman was my boyfriend Lenny Kravitz’s mom. Whew. 2.…

  • Domo Arigato

I’m sleepy today. I’m kinda thinking that I would like to climb back in bed and have a nap. Working from home, with my ‘office’ in my bedroom, doesn’t help matters any. Being stuck on my project and sitting here waiting for a coworker to get back to me with some info doesn’t help so much, either. So, while I wait, I’ll fill my time by telling you about the concert that Ted and I went to last night. You’ll get his side on his blog, which will be full of interesting information about the band and all kinds of cool tidbits, I’m sure, so I’m going to be really…

  • Happy (Belated) Birthday, Sesame Street

I have a couple of Portland related posts in mind…one is about the yummy and not-so-yummy restaurants we went to, one about books I read or bought there…one about the beautiful world of Forest Park. But I had to stop and do this, because Issa and Mom-101 did it several days ago, and it will soon be too late to jump on the bandwagon. Stupid vacation. So, this started on Mrs. Davis’s blog, where she talked about popular culture influences you had as a child, due to the new season of Sesame Street starting on August 14th. She gave out a bunch of linky love on the 14th, but I…

  • Mark Knopfler/Emmylou Harris concert

Last summer, Ted’s boss had 8 tickets to see Mark Knopfler at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, and then something came up, and he couldn’t use them. He knew how much Ted loved Mark Knopfler, so he very generously gave him the tickets. No $$, just tickets. NICE! So, we rounded up the family, and we all went. It was such a great concert, with SO MUCH energy, so much fun, wonderful wonderful. We had a great time. You all know how I feel about Dire Straits, and this was a great concert, because he played a lot of the old Dire Straits material for it. Friday was the last…

  • Why I Love Dire Straits

Saturday I went to the fabulous Dorothy’s house for her birthday party, where we wilted in the heat, got smart and came inside, drank margaritas and ate yummy food. It was a lovely time overall. Thanks, Dorothy! One of the guests, an across the street neighbor, had a DVD for Live Aid, which we popped in and watched. LOVED it. LOVED seeing my first husband back when he was younger (That’s David Bowie, and don’t worry, Ted was married to Michelle Pfieffer at the time, so he wasn’t jealous….and yes, when he sang, “I, I will be king, and you, you will be my queen” It only APPEARED that he…

  • Calling All Dead Heads

Any Greatful Dead fans in the audience? Ted did an awesome interview, just for fun, with a HUGE Dead fan who works with him. I’m not a huge fan, but it’s fun to listen to someone who is, and hear what a smart guy who loves the music has to say. Go check it out. 🙂

  • When I’m 64

Happy Belated Birthday to Paul McCartney, who turned 64 on June 18th. I’ll confess, Paul was the Beatle I had a crush on first. And come on, look at that face. That’s a face a 13 year old can love. He’s so…safe. And cute. 😉 John was the one who I had a crush on in High School (though of course he was already dead by that point, lending him an even greater sense of tragedy and mystery). I sometimes thought, personality wise, that Paul was the Heart of the Beatles, and John was the Soul. Not sure where that leaves poor George and Ringo. I like to picture Paul…
