Suite Française
Because I read mainly novels, the identity and experience of the author is usually immaterial to me. Of course, who they are and where they are from shape their words and the stories they tell, but seldom do I pay attention to these things. My belief is that the authors would want it to be so – that they would wish for their stories and characters to stand on their own, and to be authentic without our knowing anything about the artist who brought them to life. Sometimes, however, this isn’t possible. Having looked at the copyright of The Grapes of Wrath, for example, I know going in that John…

DoSoEvAyMo
Hopped on over to a new blog today (not a new blog, but you know, new to me, found her through the whole NaBloPoMo thing), and loved what she had to say about creativity and letting loose in her writing.  Went from there over to another blog, The Letter W (justsohappens this was Maya’s favorite letter way back when she was learning them), and saw an idea I’m going to incorporate. Do Something Every Day Month, aka, DoSoEvAyMo. So…I’ll post my regular posts, and at the bottom, I’ll add what it is that I’m hoping to do that day. By the way, this is pretty much NOT her point…her point, I…

Kool Thing
Some song on the radio reminded me for a brief moment of this song, from way back in 1990, Kool Thing, by Sonic Youth. There’s a bit in the middle when they get all political, and Kim asks Chuck D what he’s going to do for the ladies…is he going to free them from white-male-corporate-oppression? He’s all supportive and kool, saying things like “Yeah…tell it like it is”, that kind of thing. I always liked that song, but here’s the thing. I don’t want a big strong man to save women from white-male-corporate-oppression. I want us to save ourselves. Men can work along with us, but not as our…

The Name Meme
NaBloPoMo is the perfect time to pull out the memes…you need something to write about, and they’re fun, right? Saw this one first at Ms. Mamma’s place back in Oct. 1. YOUR ROCK STAR NAME: (first pet & first car) – Samantha Bug (with a name like that, I think I’m destined to be a rock star on Disney Channel. Not enough street cred anwhere else.) 2. YOUR GANGSTA NAME: (fave ice cream flavor, favorite cookie) – Cherries Jubilee Mexican Wedding (Yah, you scared of me now? ) 3. YOUR “FLY Guy/Girl†NAME: (first initial of first name, first three letters of your last name) – J ASR 4. YOUR DETECTIVE NAME:…

Player?
The Only Thing You Play is “Cool” It’s not that you don’t have the skills to juggle a few men… Nope, you just lack the desire. You prefer dating to be a simple one on one process. No games, no other people, no drama – just you and the guy you’re getting to know. When It Comes To Men, Are You a Player?

Nonfiction Books
I’ve been looking around for a non-fiction challenge. Anyone know of one? I certainly don’t have the energy or nerve to host one myself, but I find these challenges very motivating, and when it comes to non-fiction, I needs me a bit of a cattle prod on my flank to get me going. But there are a few books that I’ve been thinking about reading, and I’m waiting for a challenge to come along, maybe in 2008? My Sister, Guard Your Veil; My Brother, Guard Your Eyes I wrote about this book here, so I won’t go into it again, but it’s composed of essays written by Iranian women, discussing…

R.I.P. Ming, World’s Oldest Animal
Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made: Those are pearls that were his eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea change Into something rich and strange. Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell ~ Shakespeare I learned via Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me the other day, of the sad tale of Ming, the world’s oldest animal. Ming, so named because he is believed to have been born during the Ming dynasty, was between 405 and 410 years old, and was old enough that he could have been served to Shakespeare himself, had he been dredged up a bit sooner. Hearing the story…

The 41 Year-Old Tween
The other day found Maya and I shopping for clothes…her jeans had all gotten too short, and some of them mighty tight as well. Most parents do their major clothes shopping in August or September, for back-to-school, but we tend to wait, so I can see what size she’ll be when the weather finally changes, which is right about now. Maya loves Limited Too for her clothing purchases (usually…sometimes we go in, and there’s nothing she wants). Just the other day, we got a catalog in the mail, and it included a coupon for 25% off of your entire purchase. So, coupon in hand, off we went to the mall.…

Butternut Squash Ravioli
This is not a picture of our ravioli…I found this yummy picture here…it’s the work of Janelle at Talk of Tomoatoes. The other day, Maya and I saw Curtis Stone make a very yummy looking Butternut Squash Ravioli. Maya LOVES butternut sqash, especially the way her Ma makes it, which is curried ‘pumpkin’, and is everyone’s favorite sidedish when we’re having curry. Anyway, we decided we would try to make this yummy looking ravioli, so I found the recipe on the internet. I didn’t want to make fresh pasta from scratch (they didn’t do it on the show, either…they bought pre-made dough), so I went to a local Italian deli…

10-20-30 Virus
I saw this one over on Autumn’s Mom and Ms. Mamma, and thought I would do it myself. 🙂 The idea is, I tell you what I was doing 10 years ago, 20 years ago, and 30 years ago. Since I’m over 40, I added 40 to this meme. Feel free to join in and do this one as well, if you’re interested. 10 years ago – 1997 – I was working as an HR Assistant at a small local company, and not really loving it. Actually, I got passed over for a promotion I wanted, which led me to accepting a job that was a much better match for…

Jolene
Jess had a post the other day about being a dorky 8-year old, and taping songs off of the radio. Back in the day, we would take our cassette player, plop it in front of the radio, and tape our favorite songs, cursing the DJ if he talked over the intro or outro (that’s a real term, ’cause I live with radio talk, so I know!). That reminded me of how my friend Jennifer and I would spend our Sunday mornings…first, I would walk to her house, which was maybe a mile or two from my house…then, I would make pancakes for us (I was 5 years older than she…
