Nonfiction Books
I’ve been looking around for a non-fiction challenge. Anyone know of one? I certainly don’t have the energy or nerve to host one myself, but I find these challenges very motivating, and when it comes to non-fiction, I needs me a bit of a cattle prod on my flank to get me going. But there are a few books that I’ve been thinking about reading, and I’m waiting for a challenge to come along, maybe in 2008? The 41 Year-Old Tween
The other day found Maya and I shopping for clothes…her jeans had all gotten too short, and some of them mighty tight as well. Most parents do their major clothes shopping in August or September, for back-to-school, but we tend to wait, so I can see what size she’ll be when the weather finally changes, which is right about now. Maya loves Limited Too for her clothing purchases (usually…sometimes we go in, and there’s nothing she wants). Butternut Squash Ravioli
This is not a picture of our ravioli…I found this yummy picture here…it’s the work of Janelle at Talk of Tomoatoes. The other day, Maya and I saw Curtis Stone make a very yummy looking Butternut Squash Ravioli. Maya LOVES butternut sqash, especially the way her Ma makes it, which is curried ‘pumpkin’, and is everyone’s favorite sidedish when we’re having curry. Anyway, we decided we would try to make this yummy looking ravioli, so I found the recipe on the internet. Jess had a post the other day about being a dorky 8-year old, and taping songs off of the radio. Calling All Wordies!
I saw this over at the hidden side of a leaf.  A fun site called Free Rice, where they give you a word with a list of 4 synonyms…you pick the right one, they donate 10 grains of rice, which are paid for by advertisers to the page. Kind of like The Hunger Site, but with learning! For each correct answer, the next word gets a little harder. For each incorrect answer, the next word gets a little easier. Hey, you can show off (at least to yourself), learn something, and have fun, all while helping to alleviate hunger. Fun!

I saw an article on the Wall Street Journal about the huge increase in sales of St. Joseph statues spurred by the lagging housing market. Lore claims that if you bury a statue of St. Joseph in your yard, it will guarantee you a quick home sale. Um…ok, I’m tempted to give it a try. I find Attorney General-designate Michael Mukasey’s equivication on whether the interrogation technique called ‘waterboarding’ constitutes torture or not to be deeply disturbing. Waterboarding was considered a war crime when practiced against Americans in WWII and in Viet Nam, yet for some reason, Mukasey can’t seem to make up his mind as to whether the treatment involved is equal to torture.
