Asmara Ethiopian Food
The picture above is not mine, I grabbed it from Trip Advisor.
Today, Maya went out with a friend, and Ted and I went into Oakland. We had no big plans, but I wanted to go to a gourmet grocery store to get some fancy Italian chocolates for Christmas gifts, as well as a couple of birthday cards. After buying the chocolates, we wandered up the street to a local independent book store, where Ted bought a book for a gift, and I bought the birthday cards. Then we started walking around, looking to see if we might find something for a late lunch. We didn’t have any luck, nothing appealed to us, so we got in the car and drove to our favorite Ethiopian restaurant, Asmara. Yay! I neglected to take a picture of our meal, so found one that looked similar. My favorite item on their menu is the red lentils (#8), but I like the variety of the combination vegetarian meal.
Ted wanted some meat, so he ordered the lamb, also the Chef’s favorite!
Your meal is brought to you family style, as you can see in the picture above. You eat it with Injera, which is a fermented flat bread, more like a pancake in texture than a naan or roti. You tear off bits of Injera, and scoop up the various stews or salad. It is so, so good. If you ever find yourself in Oakland, and are in the mood for a delicious, low key, flavorful treat, give it a try.

I love Ethiopian food! Years ago, I used to go to an Ethiopian restaurant in Tampa (I don’t think it’s there anymore.) We used to order a vegetarian plate which was probably very similar to this. So good- and I love the injera.

This looks amazing! I have family that live near Oakland and definitely need to have some Ethiopian food when I visit them next. I love Ethiopian but sadly there isn’t much historical Ethiopian immigration where I live now… fingers crossed someone will set up an Ethiopian restaurant here soon.

There are quite a few Ethiopian restaurants in this area, there must be quite a community. But this one is by far my favorite. Not fancy, but delicious!
