A Day of ‘Firsts’

Today was a day of ‘firsts in awhile’…I haven’t done any of these things since SIP started in March.

1. Got $$ from the ATM

2. Went to the Farmer’s Market

3. Went to a movie

I haven’t needed cash, really the place I spend it most is at the Farmer’s Market. I don’t know WHY I haven’t been going there, it’s obviously even more safe than the grocery store, but I did worry about being around too many people, and then there was smoke and hot days and blah blah blah. It wasn’t crowded, everyone was wearing masks (even though the guy selling grapes had his under his nose…) and it was nice to get really good produce.

For the movie, we saw Tenet at the drive in. It was OK as a film, not great but not bad. The drive in is kind of distracting, and I wish the screen were bigger. There were SO MANY PEOPLE trying to get in, the line of cars was really long, and it took us about 45 or 50 minutes to get in, and we missed about 20 minutes of the movie. It’s supposed to be a ‘visually stunning’ film, but I didn’t see that on the drive in screen. We came home and looked at some YouTube reviews on our TV, and it did indeed look visually stunning. BUT IT WAS FUN TO GET OUT AND DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

I miss restaurants and movies. A lot. Not sure when I’ll feel brave enough to go eat at a restaurant again, even outside.

I got money at the ATM a few weeks ago and felt like I was living large. Not the dollar amount withdrawn, but doing something wild. We’ve not gone out to eat since this began. Most places I don’t miss, but one local restaurant has the best crab cakes… and pear martinis… Those I miss.

Ally, what’s your stance on take out? Are they close enough? Maybe you could get crab cakes and pear martinis to go and eat them at home?

We didn’t eat out often, but when we did, we’d go to a local place that has truly excellent food. We know the owner and everyone in there, including the chef. It’s pricey, but absolutely worth it.

They’re open for carryout, but it’s of course not the same. And by the time it gets home, it’s not completely hot, and it’s a bit of a mess, and there’s no presentation, and yada yada yada. We do try to do it once in a while to support them. Now in Ohio, restaurants are allowed to open to (I think) 30% capacity, so there is some dining in. I won’t do it, however. A recent contact tracing study showed that a huge percentage of those with COVID had eaten at a restaurant in the two weeks previous to showing symptoms. No thank you.

What I miss most is Mindless Living. Just living without thinking of distance, where’s my mask, where’s my sanitizer, etc. You know–The Goode Olde Days.

Sigh. No, not the same. There is a restaurant in Oakland that I have written about before, I went there for amazing pasta with my SIL last October. I desperately want them to stay open. So I got take out once, and it was delicious, but no, not the same. The food wasn’t quite hot enough, as you said, and the presentation was less than perfect, though still very nice. We’ve been getting take out once a week, and I’m getting a little tired of it, but I do want our local places to stay open, so I keep at it.

I’m with you also on not eating at restaurants. We are open for outdoor only, with 6+ feet between tables, but that still makes me nervous, all of those people without masks, so I won’t do it.

And yes…bring on the Mindless Living. What a lovely thing that will be.
