Sunday Musings – What the Hell is Wrong with Me?

This is the outlook on my weather app. It’s Sunday morning as I write this, and it’s raining right now. We’re going to get a break for a few hours, in which time we will take Mulder for his walk. It is going to start again this evening, and we have a storm tomorrow. Then it is supposed to calm down, no more rain in the forecast for the next 10 days at least. Which I will admit, stresses me out. I mean, I WANT IT TO DRY OUT, but at the same time, if this is IT for the year and we don’t get any more rain (it has happened SO many times…), then where will we be? Our snowpack is really good right now, but if we don’t get any more, where will that have us in April? If he get a high pressure system that warms things up too much, then snow will melt too fast, and our reservoirs will be too full and they will have to release water. Flooding and then drought. Ugh.

As I have mentioned many a time, it is difficult to make a Californian happy when it comes to rain. I am a perfect example of this. My hope is that this is the end of the storm after storm after storm BS, no more downed trees and flooding. But that we get some reasonable storms in February and March, with reasonable drying out periods in between. Too much to ask? Time will tell.

In other news, our next door neighbors’ tree came down last week. (Actually, the tree you can see on the other side of the fence came down too). I miss the privacy and shade it afforded us. However, the blooms it produced gave Ted asthma every year, so in a way it is good news. Now we’re thinking that we might plant a tree in that corner, since we will have more light. What kind of tree? Not sure. Perhaps a Japanese maple would do well? It would have to be something that doesn’t need full sun, or afternoon sun, but that can handle SOME very bright hot sun. Research will ensue.

“I WANT IT TO DRY OUT” I understand that. I felt that way all last summer when we had too much rain. Trees fell over around here too. Disconcerting, but if it helps Ted breathe more easily maybe a blessing?

You’re bringing back memories of how we ended up getting a new roof last summer. We had a freak storm that caused a huge branch to come down on the roof – when I say “huge” I mean the branch was longer than the length of the house and it took a crane to get it off.

Yes, moderation in all things, especially weather!

Weather is such a weird thing. We always want what we won’t get. However. I do hope that the rains spreads out a bit. It seems like California really could use it.
The fallen tree looks scary specially since it seems to be a tight spot to come down.

Thanks Tobia, yes, we need a break. It was a tight space to be sure. We live in a townhouse with small patios/yards, so not a lot of room for anything.

It’s too wet here too and I worry about flooding, mudslides and avalanches (when it’s too warm in the mountains). We need a substantial snowpack too and I’m not sure that ours is up where it should be.

I so hear you on the rain. It’s kind of cozy to sit inside and hear the patter of rain on the roof but it also stresses me out because of all the flooding you see on the news and I want to be able to go on a walk again without getting wet feet. Fingers crossed at least the drought will let up a little this year.

Thanks Meike! It looks like the prediction has changed a bit since I took that screenshot, and now we are supposed to get some rain on Wednesday, and then nothing for at least a week. I am going to try to really enjoy that sun and not having to worry about a wet dog walk!

Yes indeed! I am in no danger of flooding here (I don’t think), but I hate to see it happening to other folks, and of course the trees are a big worry!

Sigh. I understand completely. I am an almost chronic complainer about the weather here, which is pointless considering I live in northeast Ohio, where the weather is almost always terrible. And unpredictable. I am constantly trying NOT to do it and be grateful, for example, today when there is almost no snow in January, or in the summer when yes, the humidity is insane, but at least it is good for my herb garden.

A Japanese red maple is a wonderful tree that will reward you over and over again with its beauty. It doesn’t like a full sun all day bleaching its leaves.

Solidarity, Sister! Thank you for understanding my grousing.

I am looking forward to doing a bit of research and deciding what tree might go best in that spot. It will be a fun project, to be sure.

I absolutely relate, J. As much flooding and destruction these last few storms has caused, I was inwardly thrilled to finally have a “wet winter” again… last year was awful, when we had one storm and that was it for the winter! We do need the rain/snow pack. I am hoping that we get a break and that more rain will come in longer waves. Fingers crossed.`

It’s nothing like California, but we have been getting rain here for about a week and I am SO tired of the rain. I hate snow, but feel like the rain might be worse. We just sit inside and watch it rain, and then it gets cold and icy and turns to freezing rain.

    Why can’t I just live in a temperature-controlled biodome?

    • J

Elisabeth, YES, I just want it to be perfect all of the time. Is that so wrong? I love the rain, but freezing rain and ice are dangerous and horrible.
