Housekeeping – NaBloPoMo

Random photo from a lovely restaurant in Vincennes, just outside of Paris.

I’ve been enjoying participating in NaBloPoMo this year…it’s very different than in prior years. Years ago when I participated, that meant going and putting your url on a big website (like BlogHer), and that was it. I would check out a few blogs, and a few would come visit me, but there were hundreds of people participating, so it was a bit overwhelming. This year, San is hosting on her personal blog, and there are 16 people in total. 16 people is manageable. I haven’t been to every blog every day, and some have issues where I am supposed to log in to Google in order to comment and I can’t for some reason, so I can’t say hi, which is sad.

Having new people come by has motivated me to clean up the place a bit, which is welcome. My poor blog has been long neglected. So I removed the pages that I don’t maintain anymore (reading challenges, recipes), and I weeded through my blog roll…I have removed folks who haven’t posted in a couple of years, and I have added everyone in the NaBloPoMo. I’ve ignored my blog roll for ages, because so many people don’t blog anymore that it made me sad. So having a bunch of new blog friends has helped give me the kick in the butt that I needed. I haven’t made any other changes.

If you see your blog on the sidebar there, and I’ve done something wrong, let me know and I will fix it. Yay for the inspiration and motivation!

I absolutely agree, back in the day, NaBloPoMo was a bit overwhelming with hundreds of participants. I basically found a few new blog friends every year and mostly stuck with my “crew”… then, everything fizzled out and so many people that I loved connecting with stopped blogging. Some I still keep up with via social media, but it’s not the same. I wish they would still blog. Which is why I am so happy to have found a new little blogging community more recently and have been so excited that NaBloPoMo got a bit of traction this year after basically doing it with a handful of people for a few years. It’s been nice to see the community grow a little bit (but not too much – haha – because I agree, 16 people is manageable).

I am so glad you found me -us! – and have been inspired to clean up your blog a bit and let “old blogs go” and connect with new blog friends. Yay!

San, I too have some friends who used to blog and now I keep up with them on Social Media. Some whom I know in person, and some whom I only know online. I with all of them would blog again. For some it was a fun, easy way to keep in touch with day to day lives, and some were amazing writers, and some were both. Sigh. So glad that NGS lead me to your NaBloPoMo.

I know how you feel about doing the BlogHer iteration of NaBloPoMo. There was a feeling of aloneness doing it, so I did it twice then stopped. San’s approach, that I only learned about mid-November, is more personal. I’m glad you joined in. It’s been fun seeing your posts every day. Now whatcha gonna do in December?

    • J

Ally, what to do in December is a question indeed. I think I will try to be more consistent with my blogging, but I’m not going to aim for every day or anything.

I don’t know if this matters to you, but I’m not getting notification of your replies to my comments. I have to check back to see what you said– which isn’t usually how WP works. It’s not big deal for me to do so, but it is unusual.

        • J

Do you mean replies to comments here on my blog? That’s probably something I would have to set up. I’ve never done that. I’ll look into it!

          • Ally Bean

Yes. You write a reply here, but WP never tells me that you’ve replied. So I check back. Yours is the only WP account I visit wherein I never know if the author of the blog has replied to my comments.

Related, are you getting notifications that I’ve replied to the comments you leave on my blog? You should be, I think. As for how any of this happens, I don’t know. I just know your account behaves differently [which is okay if that’s what you want of course].

            • J

Ally, interesting. I have no idea how to make that happen. I just went into wordpress to try to find it under Settings – Comments, and nothing there.

I do get emails from you and some others when you or someone else likes or replies to my comment, yes.

I love that little bird working on its nest. It’s a charming little bit of bric-a-brac that I’d long to have and then remind myself that the last thing I need is something to sit on a table and collect dust. Much better to photograph it.

You’ve been admirable in your dedication to writing here every day this month. I’ve done it in the past, and it’s been a good experience overall. Nothing organized (you know I’m not one for big organized affairs), but my own thing. I really thought the discipline and routine would stick with me beyond November, but alas! it did not.

Nance, I think I may have participated (in my own little way also) due to inspiration from you in the past. I liked the prompt of following the alphabet one year (I think I did that for November last year), it gave me structure and at least 26 prompts.

That little bird IS cute. I really liked that restaurant.

I love that bird/nest photo! So charming!

And hooray for a new blogging community — although I still have hope that some of the old bloggers will retreat from Twitter and rejoin us here in blogland. There are so many I miss.

Thank you so much for adding my blog to your blogroll! For some reason, the link doesn’t work for me — I wonder what would happen if you removed the “www”? Now I need to consider adding a new blogroll to my blog! I removed mine a few years ago when it became too depressing to maintain.

    • J

      Hi Suzanne,

I don’t know how that www got into my link, but I fixed it and now it works. Thanks for the heads up!

Now if only I knew how to fix the issue I have commenting on some blogs. Sigh.

This is my second year doing San’s version of NaBloPoMo, and both times it’s been such a positive thing. I also need to clean up my blog- maybe that could be the December Project!

    • J

Jenny, it depends on how much you want to do I guess. My husband said, “Where’s the recipe page? How will I find my recipes?” I wonder if that means I am going to need to update and fix that page. Not yet. I hadn’t really maintained it in several years anyway.

This was my first year participating in NaBloPoMo and it has been wonderful! Mostly because it has led me to some terrific new-to-me blogs…including your lovely corner of the internet <3
