A Random Post About Not Much…
This picture is of a Christmas Stollen, which is supposed to look like the swaddled baby Jesus, and which you enjoy for St. Nicholas Day, December 5th or 6th. (The 6th is St. Nicholas Day, but the eve is when you maybe eat the stollen? Not completely clear, though I do know it’s yummy.)
Not much to write about today, but I thought I’d say hi to let you know I’m still here. Last night was nice, went to dinner with my friend Neva, whom I’ve known since 6th grade. It’s funny to be two women in your 40s when you’ve known each other since you were in your early teens, because you still see glimpses of that pre-teen in there, and yet…the wrinkles, etc. Anyway, we talked a lot, about her pending divorce (a relief), her kids, my kid, our not selling the house (so over that whole idea anyway), etc. We did a bit of Christmas shopping, bought some lovely new face cream for myself, plus a new sweater to replace the one that’s so fuzzy and pilly and ucky that I don’t want to wear it anymore.
Today Maya has an orthodontist appointment, where they check to see that her 12-year molars are in enough to go forward with ‘phase two’ of the braces. We did take her to the third-party wonderful dentist, and he explained to us why this phase is indeed important, and worth the money, and so we’re girding our loins or whatever you’re supposed to gird or suck up or whatever, preparing ourselves for the financial hit, and for poor Maya to have to deal with the stupid painful pain again. Damn.
It’s a rainy day, and I love rainy days, so that’s a good thing. Woke up to the sound of it, and the smell of it. It’s stopped now, so I’m not sure if we should risk the walk to school or not. I don’t want Maya to have to sit through her classes with wet clothes (just the bottom of the jeans, since we would take umbrellas, but still). But we do enjoy walking in the rain. We’ll see.Â
I see a couple more states have published tax tables for 2008. That’s of no interest to anyone, not even me, but it’s part of my job, so I’ll get the information down and make sure it makes it into our software in a timely manner. Did I just write that? Could that perhaps be the most boring sentence EVER?
We didn’t have an open house on Sunday. Can I tell you how nice it felt to clean the house, and have it just be clean for us? Went grocery shopping, did laundry…just a cozy home-ish day, which was really nice. Maya’s BFF came over, and they had a good time playing with their Nintendo DSs, and playing on the X-Box. I wish we lived in a neighborhood where there is more to do outside, but we really don’t.
We have an appointment for someone to come see the place tomorrow evening. Our Realtor is excited about it, and very hopeful that this last minute interested party will make an offer and get us into our new place soon. I think the chances of someone coming along with the right offer, and being able to get financing, etc., is pretty slim. They do always say, “It only takes one”, but yeah, I’m not holding my breath.
Genevieve is suffering from stupid dog allergies, which make her snout itch something fierce. We have her on meds, which make her thirsty, so she pees a lot. Seemed to be getting much better, but then this morning, back with the itching. Sigh.
I’m getting my hair cut tomorrow. Yay! Needs it. Even more, the roots are pretty dark, so I need the foils on my head. I always feel 5 years younger when I come out all prettified.
Tonight is the first evening of Hanukkah. I don’t know if we’ll celebrate or not, since I think our menorah is packed anyway. By the time we get our things unpacked, it will probably be over. Thursday is St. Nicholas Day, and I was thinking of getting a Stollen, since it’s yummy and pretty, but I just know that 80% of it will go to waste, and won’t get eaten, so it’s probably not a good idea. Unless I buy one, and we eat a bit, and then Ted takes the rest to work on Friday. That’s what offices are for, right? A place to deposit your extra sweets?Â
Anyway, that’s enough rambling on about nothing much for one Tuesday morning. Hope your day is whatever you want it to be. 🙂

Tonight at the Stoneridge mall they are going to feature a menorah made entirely of Legos. 🙂

I’ve never had a christmas stollen before, but that looks pretty tasty. 🙂
Isn’t rain just most romantic? Sigh… I’m sure it’s even better going for a walk… with your little girl. That. IS. SO. Sweet.

I need to send a Hanukkah card to some friends. Thanks for the reminder. That stollen makes me hungry. Time for lunch!

Just think how Kate and I feel getting together at 65 and still able to see the 14 year olds inside! It is a wonderful thing — and think, when people lived in small towns for all of their lives, everyone had those glimpses of each other all their lives.

Well, we can cross our fingers for a St. Nicholas Day miracle, can’t we?

Happy Tuesday! 🙂
I feel badly that Maya has to go through the braces thing again 🙁

So many different things to comment on. Sometimes I like these more personal kinds of posts. A St. Nicholas Day miracle would be nice. Yes, Virginia there IS a Santa Claus!! haha Never even heard of a stollen. But it did look tasty. And I wish I didn’t live so far and wasn’t so beat, I’d like to see the menorah made entirely of Legos.
It’s nice to have a good friend fromf way back that you still get together with and giggle. I miss mine.
Happy Tuesday to you missy!

Oh, please, don’t get me started on Stollen (grin). My father absolutely adores the stuff and making it is my annual nightmare. As much as I enjoy baking, and as much as I am reasonably proficient as a baker, stollen remains in a category all its own. “Stollen Day” is the one day of the year I can actually tell my family that they need to LEAVE the house and they actually believe me!
Read more about it here on my knitting blog.

Oh, and your dog’s allergies? Mine has them, too, and in addition to oil supplements in his food, I find that weekly baths help a lot….

Wow Deb, I went and read your Stollen story! What an amazing labor of love. You just convinced me NOT to try to make it at home, though! If I decide we should try it, I’ll run over to Cost Plus and see if they have any. Seems like I’ve seen it there in the past.
AM, I’m guessing the menorah will be there for 8 days, so if you felt like seeing a big lego menorah, this weekend would work out fine! I’m thinking we won’t go down there, what with the ortho and all. But I did find the menorah, and I got some latkes! Mmmm. Fried potatoes=good.
ML, the braces thing does indeed suck. Since I suffered through them, I feel worse for her than I do for us, and we’ll be paying a lot of money. Sigh.
Gina, thanks, we’ll see about that miracle. 😉

Today, I was out this morning buying things for St. Nikolas. In one of the specialties stores there were mini Christmas Stollen. Just big enough for one person! Brilliant. Too bad it is too late to send you one. Still, keep it in mind.
