I carry your heart

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

~ee cummings

I was thinking of trying a Sunday Scribblings this week, and the writing prompt was “I carry”.

I thought long and hard (OK, sort of long, sort of hard) about what I carry, and I wasn’t coming up with anything that I really wanted to say, that would mean anything to anyone out there. I carry Maya’s backpack for her in the mornings, because it is heavy and we walk 2 miles to her school…I carry deep love for my family in my heart…I carry too much bile and anger toward our current government in my spleen (that’s where bile lives, right?)…But what I kept coming back to was my favorite poem, by my favorite poet. I know Sunday Scribblings is supposed to encourage writers to write, so I’m not doing so well on that front. But this is a truly lovely, beautiful, heartfelt poem. I gave it to Ted once, all those years ago, when we were dating and all googly eyed. We’ve come a long way since then, but this poem still pretty much sums up how I feel for him.

Today is a trip to a local chocolate factory for a tour…again, jealous much?

Given that Sunday Scribblings is about good writing, I think your post is a winner. That is a wonderful poem! I’m glad you shared it today.

That is beautiful. So really and truly perfect. If you reverse it, that was Leonard and me. Thank you for sharing and I wish you so many long and happy years together.

When I peeked into my magic Google Reader and saw that you had posted this poem I felt that on some strange level we are kindred spirits (I love that term as used in Anne of Green Gables). This is hands down one of my favorite poems. It speaks of love across the miles and love in the same house. I have written this poem into each of my daughters letter journals, a compilation of letters I’m writing to them as they grow. What a great selection.
