What’s in YOUR Freezer?
Part of getting our place ready for an open house has been cleaning and decluttering all of the places that nosy people might peek. Since the refrigerator and freezer are included in the sale of the place, I suppose they have a right to peek in there to see what kind of science experiments we might be growing. The answer? None. That is one CLEAN fridge and freezer, let me tell you.
After cleaning out the freezer, and throwing away a lot of half eaten boxes of Popsicles, things like that, I was making Maya’s lunch yesterday, and I saw this lovely box of popcorn chicken.
“Hey,” I thought, “I haven’t made her any kind of chicken nugget type thing in a LONG time. I could put together a little dipping thing of catsup or honey, and she would be golden.” So here’s how it looked…
But then, as I was cleaning up and putting things away, and looking at the directions on the box of chicken so I could tell Maya how long to microwave them at lunchtime, I saw the back of the box…
I wish this picture weren’t so dang blurry…what is says is that you can watch the 2003-2004 season of some sport or another on ESPN, and gives the schedule. “How odd,” I thought, “I wonder why they would put something so OLD on a box of popcorn chicken?” Then I put it away, and went to take my shower.
As I was washing my hair, which doesn’t take as long as it used to, thanks for asking, I suddenly figured it out (I know, it took me long enough, didn’t it….), the reason that they had something so OLD on that box was…it was a really OLD box of chicken nuggets. Hmmmm.
So here’s the dilemma….to leave it as is, or fix it? SHE doesn’t know they’re old….they’ve been in the freezer the whole time, the box had never been opened, so it was surely FINE. I thought that way for about 3 whole minutes, and then I started thinking…”What if…I don’t know what if WHAT, but what if…I don’t want her to get sick. Heck, I don’t even want to pack her a lunch that she finds disgusting because it’s so dang old and dried out tasting or something.” So, I replaced the chicken with a nice FRESH sandwich, and I replaced the ketchup with a brownie. That’s against the school rules, by the way….no sugar in their lunch. What the hell, I thought, we’re living on the edge. After all, it WAS her father’s birthday. 😉
Happy Friday everyone, and I hope all of your food is relatively fresh this weekend.

i’m sure i have equally as old things lurking in the back of my brand-new freezer that migrated from the old freezer.

Beenzzz, thanks. 🙂
Melissa, that’s her groovy little bento box, which fits into her lunchbox. Cool, huh? She loves it. Sometimes though, like today for example, we just throw things into a lunchbox and call it a day

Can you pack my lunch from now on? 🙂 Good idea chucking the chicken nuggets. Better safe than sorry, huh?

I miss someone packing my lunch! I’m glad you snuck the brownie in there!!!
Maya's Granny
It looks like a lovely lunch. Every little once in a while, it is necessary to bend the rules and send a brownie.

The great browie rebellion of 2007! I love it!

I dug some frozen strawberries out of the freezer and fed them to Mr. P because we had run out of fruit. I swear those things were at least three years old, but he ate them just fine and had no stomach issues, thank god.

My freezer doesn’t bear thinking about.

I still have a couplah spinach pies I made and froze a month ago. Other than that, my freezer is pretty much cleaned out.
which reminds me, I need to do some grocery shopping.

J, I am most impressed with Maya’s lovely lunchbox and how neatly you arranged her food in it. I think my kids would be more likely to eat all their lunch if I presented it as well as you do for Maya. One question…do the cut bananas not get brown by the time she gets to her lunch? And nice that the school has a microwave for them to use.
J
Lotus, if you put a bit of OJ or something citrus, they don’t turn brown. Also, the little bento box thing is pretty close to air tight, which helps. I’ll have to ask her if they turn brown or not…she’s never complained about it….

Thanks, J, going to have to look for one of those Bento boxes!

Lotus, I got Maya’s here: http://www.laptoplunches.com/

That is one neat Bento box!!!
We have three freezers. Two big ones and the little freezer compartment above the fridge. Why three freezers? My husband’s a farmer. LOL! One fridge is for our frozen produce from our garden (fruits, veggies, etc) and one for meat (sorry if anyone reading this is vegetarian 🙁 . Hubby’s a beef farmer). The last freezer (the one attached to the fridge) is for freezing bread and ice. Yeah, when I bake bread, I freeze some and just take it out when I need it. That way, we always have homemade bread around.

My parents loved to save money by buying in bulk and they also had a garden and froze vegetables. We had a big freezer that was always packed, but I got so tired of eating OLD FOOD that tasted stale or had freezer burn that as a teen I vowed never to hoard food as an adult.
The oldest items in my freezer compartment have only been there about 2 months. We stock the freezer, than eat until it’s nearly empty and stock it again.

I can see not providing sugar in the foods they sell at school, but to prohibit parents from sending it in their lunch???? Who died and made them Mayor McCheese?

This post did get me thinking about my freezer. Her lunch looks great.
