Good News/Bad News

Good News:  Though Maya has been sick pretty much since last Saturday evening, she was feeling well enough yesterday to go on a field trip with her class to the Marine Science Institute in Redwood City, about 1.5 hours from here.

Bad News: Taking her was a tactical error on my part, because last night she was completely wiped out, and I’m going to keep her home again today to prevent a total relapse.  That makes three days of school she’s missed this week.

Good News: It looks like we may be able to swing a slightly larger overpriced piece of California Real Estate than we currently have, a townhome with 3 bedrooms rather than our current 2.  That’s VERY good news, because the office/bedroom setup we have right now is horrid and getting worse.

Bad News: The stress of how we’re going to manage it, and whether it’s the right decision to make, had me up at 3am yesterday, fretting.

Good News:  I’m going to see my dad and step-mom tomorrow- they’ll be down from Portland.

Bad News: The reason they’re in California this weekend is that my step-mom’s mother passed away last week.

Good News: The water from the leaking microwave isn’t toxic.  We know this for sure, because the reason we could find NOTHING anywhere telling us about microwaves that leak is that is turns out, it wasn’t the microwave that was leaking.

Bad News: Even though we were somewhat scientific in determining that the leak was from the microwave, moving it to other parts of the kitchen and observing that the puddles on the counter stopped, they were sporadic enough to make the whole thing very confusing.  In other words, though there were no more puddles on the counter, there were also no puddles in the new microwave location, causing consternation.  But then on Monday, there was a big puddle on the counter, even without the microwave.  We called a plumber, and it seems that the pipe underneath our bathtub (upstairs, above the damp counter) has sprung a leak, causing water to quietly slide down the drywall, pooling on the counter, right underneath the microwave oven, causing us much confusion about what could possibly cause a microwave to leak water. More bad news, they cannot access the spot with the leak, so today they’re sending out someone to take down our kitchen cabinets, cut a hole in the wall/ceiling, so the plumber can reach up there, and then hopefully patch that wall hole back up.  UGH.

Good News: Ted had the carpets cleaned yesterday, and they look about 100 times better.

Bad News: I have no bad news on that one.  Yay!

Good News: I’m enjoying watching Heroes, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica – Nice to have some good TV again.

Bad News: I’ve only finished two of my books for the Winter Classics Challenge.  I’m not at all sure that I’m going to be able to finish the other three in less than 2 weeks.  Too much TV = too little momentum in the reading.

Good News: When I first got my beloved iPod and started downloading podcasts, Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me wasn’t available…it is now!  Thanks to a post from Susan of Italy, I went to check it out, and now I’m enjoying one of my favorite NPR shows while I walk the dog.

Bad News: I suspect the other walkers out there think I’m insane, walking along and laughing out loud to myself…

Good News: It’s FRIDAY!  And a three day weekend to boot!

Bad News: There’s no bad news on that one, either.  Seems like I’ve run out of bad news.  And really, isn’t that good news?

I hope Maya feels better and does not relapse. Smart keeping her home to be on the safe side.

Congrats on deciding to get a larger home! Something like that is stressful, but worth the investment. Yeah!

Bummer on the leak 🙁 After having numerous basement floods, I’m very FRIGHTENED of water leaks. Just hearing a slight drip of water sends me into stress overload. Sometimes I think I’m just imagining the dripping sound.

Have a great long weekend 🙂

I like your clarity. I need to learn to think in a good news/bad news kind of way. I’m more of everything is shades of gray kind of thinker– and I drive myself batty.

That was fun. I’m glad there was more good than bad. I’m really excited for you about moving. I know it’s incredibly stress to go through it, but once it’s done you are going to be so happy. Sorry about Maya and your plumbing sitch. Hope that goes well and doesn’t take a huge bite out of ya.

I am really NOT looking forward to dealing with the contrator and the plumber today. I sure hope they can get this thing fixed by the end of the day.

I hope Maya is feeling better this morning.

And the real estate stuff is exciting! Hopefully, we’ll be able to swing it.

I’m sorry Maya hasn’t been well. We have two things going around right now, the stomach flu and a persistant cold from hell. D and I are still fighting the cold. It won’t seem to go away!!!!
We are also looking to sell our home late spring. I hope its not too stressful. Good luck with the new townhome and have a wonderful weekend.

Enjoy your three day weekend, my friend! Hopefully, with three days to relax and regroup, some of the bad news items will turn into good news items. 🙂 I’m an optimist that way!

I too am glad that the good seems to be outweighing the bad.

I try to tell myself when I have those 3:00 AM moments that worrying about it will not help the situation, but getting sleep will help me deal with it.

I usually just end up worrying about getting enough sleep. 😉

Your post reminds me of a Chinese legend my mom told me where a bit of what looks initially like bad news turns out to produce a happy result which in turn brings forth something bad. Pretty cool.

I just have to say, you’re brave podcasting Wait, Wait..! If it were me, I’d be afraid to be out walking the dog in public, sporadically bursting out into loud guffaws. Have fun!

Hope Maya’s feeling better 🙂 My Dad always said that in life there’s always two sides and you have to accept them both. One cannot exist without the other. He said where there’s life, there’s death…where there’s good, there’s bad… I suppose it’s his old school Chinese upbringing, but I must say, he’s a wise man, my Dad.

    Have a good weekend!!

Great idea for a post, J!

How is the market in your neck of the woods? I read that Bay area real estate was falling, and it is definitely falling over here. It’s so hard to know exactly when to jump in, though! Congrats on the possible purchase of another place!

Gina, the market here has definately cooled down quite a bit, thankfully. When we bought this place in ’98, the market was heating up, and buyers didn’t have much leeway, and not long after that it got insane, with most places going for well over their asking price. Now, if you’re looking to buy, you still have to shell out a ton of money, but at least you have time to breathe while looking.
