Heartwood
Heartwood ~ Amity Gaige
Valerie Gillis is hiking the Appalachian Trail alone. Well, sort of alone, as there are a lot of hikers on the trail, and people sometimes hike together for days or weeks on end, and her husband is following along in his car, meeting her every few days to give her provisions. When she doesn’t show up on time, he’s not too worried at first, but after a day goes by and she still doesn’t appear, he starts to worry.
The search is on, led by Beverly, the Maine State Game Warden with a perfect record for finding lost hikers. She doesn’t always find them alive, but she always finds them.
Lena is an elderly recluse in a retirement community, who would rather spend time with her online friends than with her fellow retirees. She is pulled into the story of the missing hiker, because for a short time she is afraid that it may be her daughter.
Heartwood is told through the lens of these three women, as well as interviews with other hikers and so on. Will Valerie be found alive? Why did she go missing to begin with? Is there foul play, or did she simply injure herself and take a wrong turn or three? I really enjoyed this book, including the sometimes complicated mother-daughter relationships of all three women. Highly recommended.

I really liked this one, too. I enjoyed the shifting narratives and the focus on mother/daughter relationships, and one of the protagonist’s decisions not to have children.

I liked all of those things about it too.

I liked this but not as much as many people – it seemed like this was a big fave for so many!

I’m not sure it was a fave for me, but I did like it enough to highly recommend it. Seems like I highly recommend a lot of books, doesn’t it?

In Book Club we read a book that took place on the Pacific Crest Trail. A woman writer whose name I don’t remember. It put me off long trails for life! LOL

Was it Wild, by Cheryl Strayed? I haven’t read it but I saw the movie, and yeah, I have no interest.

That’s funny, I read it but haven’t seen the movie, and have no interest.

It was really good. I love Laura Dern, and also Reese Witherspoon, so I was happy.

Yes, that’s the book. I didn’t care for it much.
J
Well now I won’t be tempted. 🙂

I am soooo far down the list for getting this book at the library but I’m excited because a) it’s so buzzy and b) I’ve read several memoirs about this trail.
Will report back when I get the book…sometime next year???

It took a long time to get to me too, which I like because when a comes in, I have no idea what it’s about and I go in blind.

Now I have that song from Dear Evan Hansen that has “hike the Appalachian Trail” in it stuck in my head. I’m pretty sure I have this on hold.
J
I don’t think I’ve heard that song. Is it about the politician who said he was ‘hiking the Appalachian trail’ when he was having an affair?

I also liked this one! I know it was fiction, but I enjoyed the details of the search for a lost hiker. I know a lot of people LOVED this one- I didn’t love it, but I did like it and I enjoyed seeing how all the stories came together in the end.
J
I enjoyed the wrap up as well. Very well done.

I found this one propulsive and fun. I was really into all the characters and found it very compelling. I’m on the Heartwood bandwagon.
J
Agreed, I was all in.

It on my TBR. Not sure who first posted about it.
Glad you enjoyed it. Your ratings are usually a good indicator for me.
