100 Foods Meme

Thanksgiving is known, not only as a day to share our thanks, but also as a day to feast. In the spirit of feasting, I thought I would take on this meme that RelaxedDad tried (he did it in two parts). Some of the foods are clearly European, as I didn’t even know what the heck they were. Here are the rules:
- Copy this list into your blog or journal, including these instructions.

So now to the foodstuffs!
1. Venison – I think mainly in the form of Summer Sausage
2. Nettle tea
3. Huevos rancheros – Hell yes. Whenever I can get my hands on it.
4. Steak tartare – Yes. Meh. I mean, if someone else at my table orders it, I’ll have a bite, but I’d rather order something else. Tuna tartare is a whole different ballgame though. I love tuna tartare.
5. Crocodile – I don’t think I’ve been anywhere that they served it. I guess I’d try it, if I were in the bayou or something.
6. Black pudding – NO. NO. NO.
7. Cheese fondue – First time I had cheese fondue, I didn’t like it. Tried it again recently, and thought it was pretty yummy. Then went to another restaurant even more recently, and yuck. So it really varies for me.
8. Carp – Maybe, but I’m not sure. Maybe not.
9. Borscht – I quite like beets, so yes.
10. Baba ghanoush – Yummy, yes please.
11. Calamari – Yummy, yes please.
12. Pho – Never tried it, but I would happily.
13. PB&J sandwich – Often. With a glass of milk. Mmmm.
14. Aloo gobi – Yes, probably my favorite way to eat cauliflower.
15. Hot dog from a street cart – With mustard and relish, thanks.
16. Epoisses – No thank you, I don’t like my cheese to reek.
17. Black truffle – Not yet, I don’t think. But maybe.
18. Fruit wine made from something other than grapes – Yes, I’ve tried this, but I’ve never liked it.
19. Steamed pork buns – Whenever we get dim sum, I want this. Mmmm.
20. Pistachio ice cream – I don’t think so, but pistachio pudding, yes.
21. Heirloom tomatoes – YES. In soup, in salad, in pasta, sliced with basil and cheese. Heck, just sliced up and eaten with good salt. Yummy.
22. Fresh wild berries – Double yes. Love them. Esp blueberries and raspberries.
23. Foie gras – I’ve tried it a few times. Disgusting.
24. Rice and beans – Yes, many times.
25. Brawn or Head Cheese – Ewww. I don’t really care for aspic.
26. Raw Scotch Bonnet pepper – No, but there might be some cooked in the hot sauce we use.
27. Dulce de leche – Not really interested, but if you order it, I’ll have a bite.
28. Oysters – Mmmm. Yes. My favorite way is on the half shell. We had shooters recently, with an oyster in a shot glass of bloody mary mix. Nice, but I like to taste the sea (as unRelaxedDad put it so well), so I like to chew them. I’ve also had smoked oysters on crackers, which can be lovely. Never tried Oysters Rockefeller, but I would try some if you ordered it.
29. Baklava – I’ve tried it. Too sweet for me. Ted likes it sometimes with strong black coffee.

32. Clam Chowder in Soudough Bowl – I love good Clam Chowder. The bowl is a nice touch, but with all of the calories in the chowder, I’m hesitant to add that much bread to the mix. It’s very Fisherman’s Wharf, though, so if I’m down that way for some reason, I’ll order it.
33. Salted Lassi – No thanks. Not a fan of the yogurty drinks.
34. Sauerkraut – Yuck.
35. Root beer float – Yum-ish. Not my favorite. Always sounds better than it is.
36. Cognac – Not so awesome.
37. Clotted Cream Tea – I’ve never even had clotted cream.
38. Vodka Jelly/Jell-O
39. Gumbo – Mmmm. Yes, please.
40. Oxtail
41. Curried goat – I think I’ve had this twice. Very tasty.
42. Whole insects – no, thank you.
43. Phaal/span – Not so into the painfully hot curries, so no thank you.
44. Goat’s milk
45. Malt whiskey from a bottle worth $120 or more – I don’t really like whiskey. I’d sneak mine over to Ted.
46. Fugu (aka puffer fish) – Not interested. Nothing against it, but just not interested.
47. Chicken tikka masala – Yes, recently actually. It’s OK, but not my favorite. A bit too rich for me.
48. Eel
49. Kispy Kreme original glazed donut – Overrated.
50. Sea urchin
51. Prickly pear
52. Umeboshi
53. Abalone – Maybe?
54. Paneer – Yes. I like paneer.
55. McDonald’s Big Mac Meal – Not often, though. I prefer a quarter pounder with cheese when I have a McDonald’s craving. Which begs the question, why does one get a craving for crappy food sometimes, when there’s so much GOOD food out there? No idea.
56. Spaetzle – Yes, once. I liked it.
57. Dirty gin martini – Don’t really like vermouth or gin.
58. Beer above 8% ABV – Don’t like beer.
59. Poutine – I think that’s something you have to grow up with to enjoy. Yuck.
60. Carob chips – Back in the 70s. Not worth it in my book.
61. Smores – I had my first smore earlier this year I think, on a camping trip with Maya’s scout troop. Meh.
62. Sweetbreads – Too gross.
63. Kaolin – Probably, as it’s used in toothpaste and medicine, but really, what?
64. Currywurst – Ewww. I suspect this is something you should grow up with to enjoy.

66. Frogs legs
67. Beignets, churros, elephant ears or funnel cake – I’ve had churros, but if I ever find myself in New Orleans, I intend to try beignets.
68. Haggis – Don’t tell Kate. She’s the Haggis lady. Or, she was. She retired from that job.
69. Fried plantain – I’ve had fried bananas though, does that count? Mmm. Fried bananas. Oh, recently had bananas foster. Really yummy.
70. Chitterlings, or andouillett – These remind me a bit of something they had in Philly, called scrapple. I was unwilling to try that, also. Blech.
71. Gazpacho – I love tomatoes, and cucumbers, so gazpacho is lovely.
72. Caviar and blini – I’ve had caviar without blini, and I quite like it. Good caviar, that is. Yucky caviar is, well, yucky.
73. Louche absinthe – I might taste it if someone else were drinking it, but I’m not the least bit tempted, really. For some reason it reminds me of a book I read in college, a novel about some hyper aesthete group of people.
74. Gjetost, or brunost – I doubt I would try this. But one never knows.
75. Roadkill – Does corn that’s fallen from the back of the farmer’s truck count? Because then I may have.
76. Baijiu – Probably not.
77. Hostess Fruit Pie – Yes, I’ve eaten them. No, not in the last 30 years.
78. Snail – Several times. Ted and I used to go to a resaurant that served snail in a mushroom cap, with a yummy garlic butter sauce. Really good. I seem to remember having snails in ravioli in Paris. Also very good. We once went to a restaurant in San Francisco that had some totally foul tasting snails. Ugh. Just the snails in the little ramekin with garlic and butter. I’m not sure if I don’t like them straight, or if they were spoiled or something. But ewww.
79. Lapsang souchong – I would try it, though.
80. Bellini – I prefer my champagne straight rather than with juice, but if I were at an outdoor brunch in late spring and someone offered me one, I’d try it.
81. Tom yum – No, I haven’t had this before, but it sure looks good. Perhaps I’ll order it next time we go out for Thai food.
82. Eggs Benedict – I enjoy eggs benedict, but I’m a bit afraid of the hollandaise sauce. Ever since I read in Kitchen Confidential that it’s a breeding ground for bacteria, I’m afraid. Ted eats it often at one particular restaurant, and he’s never gotten sick, so I should relax.
83. Pocky – No, but I would if I got the chance. They look yummy.
84. Tasting menu at a three-Michelin-star restaurant – I don’t think I’ve ever been to a three Michelin star restaurant. I’ve been to some really good ones, though.
85. Kobe beef – I would eat it if someone else paid for it. But I’m not interested in paying that much.
86. Hare – I’ve had rabbit a few times, does that count? Or does it have to be wild? Anyway, it’s not my favorite meat by a long shot.
87. Goulash – We used to have a roommate in Alaska who made goulash, and I use his recipe sometimes. I don’t know how authentic it is, but it’s good.
88. Flowers – In salad, I guess.
89. Horse – EWWWWW. No. No. NO.
90. Criollo chocolate – Maybe. Not sure.
91. Spam – I don’t really care for it, but I’ve had it.
92. Soft shell crab – Oh, yes please! My favorite place for this is a restaurant we sometimes went to in Philly. It was a Mediterranean place called Dmitri’s, and they had a lovely soft shell crab. Really good. People claim you can’t get it in California, but I’ve had it in San Francisco. And I’ve seen it at the grocery store. So people lie.
93. Rose harissa – I think so, at a Moroccan restaurant.
94. Catfish – I’m not sure. I don’t THINK so.
95. Mole poblano – Though I have made a nice vegetable mole soup.
96. Bagel and lox – Now you’re making me hungry.
97. Lobster Thermidor – I’m not a big fan of lobster. It’s too rich for my tummy. So putting cheese on it just seems bad all around to me. I would eat a bite of your lobster if you ordered it, but sans cheese, please.
98. Polenta – Usually I don’t care for it. But once or twice, I’ve had really good polenta at a restaurant. I don’t like it fried, only soft. And when I try to make it at home, it never comes out as delicious as at the restaurant, so I don’t bother.
99. Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee – I don’t drink coffee. Hurts my tummy.
100. Snake – I don’t think I’ve ever had the opportunity to eat snake. I guess I would, if I had the chance. Tastes like chicken, right?

We’re not ‘black Friday’ type people, so I doubt we’ll venture out trying to find bargains. Maybe read and watch a movie, maybe take the dog for a long walk, we’ll see where the day takes us.

Glad you are back online Hope you have a relaxing weekend. My brain was a little too fried to go through the list. But I did notice Oysters. I like clams but I don’t know why I’ve never tried Oysters.

AM, oysters are lovely…they taste like the ocean, sort of, without all of the salt. The texture bothers a lot of people, though.
Cherry, I’ve never had Aka Unagi, and I don’t like cream in my tea, so no, I didn’t try that. It’s a fun meme, though it takes awhile.

I’ve never actually had tuna tartare (though I’m no stranger to raw tuna, obviously – what a nice idea!

Re: number 84, I just replied to your comment over at my blog, recommending a 3-star place near you.
I grew up eating clotted cream – it comes from Devon, where I was born. I’ve tried, and I’ve never been able to find the real thing outside of that county, even in other parts of England.
I might get around to doing this list myself later this week…
