Recipe Wednesday
Back when I first moved to San Francisco in 1987, I moved there with Troy, who was ready to brush the stench of Stockton off of his shoes as much as I was. He found us a great flat in SF, at Fulton and Masonic, for only $850 a month. Boy, what a deal. Anyway, Troy was a great guy, he used to work at a hotel down near the airport on the graveyard shift, and I worked at a hotel in downtown SF on the 4 – 12 shift, and we both went to school in the mornings. A few times I woke up and found flowers on my…

I Voted….Did You?
Several states around the nation are having primary elections today. We just went and voted (not for Arnie, in case you’re wondering…), and boy, the turnout was BAD. We were voters #12 and #13 for the day, so far. Ted got to try some fancy new computerized system, and I had to do a provisional ballot, because I requested an absentee ballot, but then forgot to fill it out and send it in (and I also lost it…). So at least we provided a little bit of excitement for the folks at the community center. 🙂 If you haven’t voted yet, and you’re in a state holding elections today, get…

Go Ask Alice?
I was talking to my niece recently, who is just finishing up her freshman year of High School. She was reading “Go Ask Alice“. Did any of you read these fake annonymous books back in the day? Remember the horror with which you followed her decent from a ‘good girl’ to a ‘druggie’, remember how quickly it seemed to all go wrong? I never read “My Name is Davy, and I’m an Alcoholic“, but I’m assuming it’s pretty similar in that way, as was the anorexia horror, “Goodbye, Paper Doll“. What is it about teenagers that makes them so fascinated with reading about others who are dealing with tragedy? Books…

Weekend Wrap-Up
For some reason on Friday, I woke up at 4am with Ted, and couldn’t go back to sleep when he left for work. I usually sleep until about 5:30 or 6:00 lately, so this was odd. Well, that all caught up with me at about 1:00. Luckily, since I work from home, I could take a 30 minute power nap after eating lunch, and see if that helps. It didn’t. I woke up grumpy and feeling like I had a nap hangover. So when Ted came home and said he wanted to go somewhere nice for dinner, somewhere in the city with French food, I was bitchy. I didn’t really…

Please Stand By…
I’m working on a “Weekend Wrap Up”, but I have other things I have to do first…like feed the child, get dressed, take her to school, etc. Enjoy this picture while you wait. BTW, look closely, and yeah, there’s a parrot in there. *Picture courtesy of SFGate, Day in Pictures. Thanks to Maya’s Granny for telling me about it.

Virginity
For some reason this story reminded me of a question I asked my mom when I was about 7 or 8. I had been arguing with my best friend, Amy Derocher (I just realized I have no idea how to spell her last name), whose parents were pretty religious by our heathen standards, and I came into the house to settle the matter. Went and found my mom, who was taking a bath. Me: “Mom, do you have to be a virgin to get married?” Mom: “No.” Me: “Are you sure?” Mom: “Yes, I’m sure.” Me: “How can you be sure?” Mom: “Well, I wasn’t a virgin when I got…

Money money money….
Now that I’m working from home, I am even more horrified by the number of charities and political calls that we receive than I was before. We are on the “Do Not Call” registry, so we don’t get the sales calls, but charities and politicians are exempt from the rules, there. Part of me would LOVE to give them all some money. They are all worthwhile organizations, out there doing good work. But I have a couple of issues. What percentage of the money I donate goes to the telemarketer? I have read that for some of these charities, 75%-80% of the money goes to the expense of raising the…

Why I LOVE me an Angry Black Bitch Once in Awhile
Because I have this thought in the back of my head, which goes something like, “Why would we want a Constitutional Amendment outlawing Gay Marriage, which will be overturned someday when our ideas of Civil Rights are a bit more defined and humane, and when we have bigger fish to fry?”, and she writes this, which talks about so much more…about how our Congress is a bunch of mamby pamby asshats that worry too much about stupid shit and not enough about REAL issues. Like poverty. Like health care. Like education. Here’s a quote of her brilliance: “Tell me how a bitch prepares to look the desperate, denied, hungry and…

13 Things I Love About France
I should have saved this post for July, I suppose, since the only time I’ve ever spent in France was on our Honeymoon, way back in July of 1993. But for some reason, I’m thinking of it now, so we’ll do 13 things I love about France today, and see what comes up in July. 🙂 La Perouse. Without question the best meal of my life. They eat whatever they want. (Although I find this book to be a bit disingenuous, since it talks about how French women don’t diet, don’t need to because they don’t overeat, they just enjoy their food…and then it talks about how to start off…
