The 41 Year-Old Tween
The other day found Maya and I shopping for clothes…her jeans had all gotten too short, and some of them mighty tight as well. Most parents do their major clothes shopping in August or September, for back-to-school, but we tend to wait, so I can see what size she’ll be when the weather finally changes, which is right about now.
Maya loves Limited Too for her clothing purchases (usually…sometimes we go in, and there’s nothing she wants). Just the other day, we got a catalog in the mail, and it included a coupon for 25% off of your entire purchase. So, coupon in hand, off we went to the mall. And guess what? While most kid/tween stores stop at about 14, Limited Too goes up to a size 20. That’s right, big enough for an adult to wear, should she be so inclined. And I was so inclined. So I bought this top for myself. Also a spangly type cami to go underneath, but that was TOO tween for me, so I put it away to save for when Maya’s old enough. I’ll wear a plain cami for now. Cute, huh?
I think that at this point, we either need to start putting initials on the tags of our clothes, or Ted is no longer required to put our clothes away for us when he does laundry. We already find her socks in my drawer and visa versa, we don’t need to torture him by making him try to figure out which shirt belongs to whom. 😉

My 10-year-old daughter is tall for her age and can wear some of my tops. She’s been wearing my socks for years, and she hijacks my clogs and flip flops.

but I must ask… How do your boobs look in your tween shirt? Would Stacy and Clinton give you the eyes?
although these day most teens have bigger boobs then I do, ok most men have bigger boobs then I do, but that’s besides the point. I have some tween shirts myself that even my boobs don’t quite fit in. I find it hilarious!

Cherry, the boobs are fine. The shirt is clearly not meant to be worn alone, though…needs a cami if people aren’t going to see a bit more clevage than any tween should be showing. 🙂

J, this post reminds me of my mom and me when I was growing up. There was a point where we used to swap/borrow each other’s clothes. Okay, I used to borrow/steal her clothes! Mom was 75 lbs when she got married and has stayed at 95 lbs for the past 30 years! Anyway, we used to be able to wear each other’s clothes…or one of us would conveniently misplace a favourite article of clothing or two!

I have a lot of students under 16 who probably wear a size 16, 18 or 20, so I’m really glad to hear they’re probably able to find the cool kids’ clothes in their sizes. I personally can’t stand how impossible it was for a while to find any pants that covered my pubic hair, not to mention how gross it was seeing students’ hipbones sticking out of their pants, but things are a big better now. The longer tops that are in style now (like yours!) at least cover their midriffs even if their pants are low riding.

I was so hoping that you and Maya would have different styles of clothing. She seems to think the two of you do ’cause she often says “Look, there’s a Mama shirt!” But me? I’m really confused now.

I was interested to hear that Limited Too is stocking up to size 20. I own an independent tween boutique (for boys and girls), and find that many kids who might fit into a size 14 insist on shopping elsewhere, in the junior department…because they want to be grown up so badly, even if they’re only 12 or 13. So I have a feeling that most of Limited Too’s buyers for the larger sizes will be moms, just like you! I do know that in my store tiny women love when they can wear our size 14’s or XLs because the prices are so much lower than in women’s boutiques!

That’s SOOOOOOOOOO CUTE. You know, my mom (she’s older than you FOR SURE, but I won’t reveal it since it’ll reveal MY age as well… 😉 ) would buy clothes like that and actually wear it OUT. She would. She doesn’t care as long as she likes it — and I think that’s great. She’s her own person and doesn’t matter what other people think fashion is supposed to be, as long as it’s not too revealing or political, as long as you’re happy and comfortable (and the price is right) – you should wear whatever you want.
Then again, coming from a fashion-obsessed individual like me. Eesh. I should follow what I preach.

P.S. I meant to also add – I don’t think this top is TOO tween… it’s quite adorable, and not too schmancy. Good enough to wear for most women. Really. Unless of course, the picture looks different from the actual shirt.
