Friday Randomness, now with Waffles!

Waffles

OK, this started out to be a review of a waffle mix I recently tried, but it’s fallen completely apart, and really, I should have separated this into two posts, but I didn’t.  So what?  My blog, my rules, even if they’re stupid.  So.

Here’s the waffle part
I recently found myself trolling Williams-Sonoma for some of their yummy pumpkin pecan waffle mix, which I’ve pushed on you before.  I didn’t see any on the floor, but they did have this Caramel Apple waffle mix, so I decided to try it.  I mean, the pumpkin waffles are awesome, and I love apples, and I love caramel, so I bought some.  It sounds like a holiday in a metal tin, doesn’t it?

A few mornings later, I whipped up a batch, as you can see in the blurry photo, above.  My food photography skills are clearly lacking.  Poured it into the waffle iron, waited a few minutes, and look, magic!  Sadly, the flavor was just so so.  Meh.  Blah.  I couldn’t really taste the apple, and the caramel came in little lumps which were very odd and crunchy.  They were perfectly light and airy inside and crispy nice outside, so it’s not like they don’t cook up well.  But for my money, I’m sticking with the pumpkin pecan mix.

Thankfully, while I was at the store, I asked if they had any I wasn’t seeing, and they said, yes, it had just come in that very morning!  A very nice person brought some out from the back of the store for me, and I splurged and bought both mixes.  Whew!  Now, I have my yummy pumpkin waffles to look forward to, and some caramel apple mix in case someone I don’t really like that much comes over to spend the night, and wants to be fed in the morning.

Now the randomness
This Just in:  Does anyone else find it odd and somehow disturbing that Borders has a wine club?  Come on, I don’t buy my books at BevMo, why would I buy my wine at Borders?

And as long as this is turning into a ‘what kind of world is this?’ post, while at Williiams-Sonoma, I saw that they have these creepy 3D Build-A-Bear cake pans.  I’m sorry, but if I had made Maya a cake that looked like this when she was younger, she would NOT have eaten it, she would have wanted to sleep with it.  It’s a cute idea, but I’m guessing some party guests might be traumatized by seeing their cute little bear friend cut into pieces and gobbled up.  Or maybe that’s just Maya, who cried at a party once when the piñata was shaped like an animal (A toucan perhaps? Or was it a unicorn? Update: Cherry just sent me the link to this video of a girl with similar sensibilities), and she hated to see it bashed up and murdered. I think we ended up bringing it home and taping it together for her. She had it for a few years, until I snuck it out to the garbage while she was at school. So you see, the cake would end up in her room, sticky and messy and attracting ants. Really a bad idea.  Gotta give props for the awesome cake decorating skilz on display here, however.  That fur and Santa suit are très cute. I do not posses these kinds of skilz.  If I tried to frost it, it would probably look like something that Genevieve squeezed out on her evening walk and tried to convince us was a sculpture of a bear dressed in a Santa suit.  She’s interesting that way.  Hmmm.  I wonder if Maya would eat it if if looked like a big bear-shaped pile of dog poop, rather than a cute little Santa bear?

Hussy HorseI thought that was it for this lame post, but then I went over to Scribbit, and saw this extreme weirdness.  I had to steal this one from her, because I think we have different readers, and I want my friends to have their coffee/milk/soda squirt out of their nose when they see this insanely horrid idea of a gift.  I’m calling her ‘hussy horse’, or perhaps ‘whore horse’, though of course her real name is ‘Sierra’, and she’s a ‘Struts Fantasy Fashion Model Horse Runway Magic‘, which actually isn’t that much better.  The hair and purse I can almost understand (not really, but I’m willing to roll with it in a ‘my pretty pony’ kind of way), but the heels?  And the dress?  And again, the heels?  Insane.

Which reminds me of the other night, when we were watching Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron.  Cute movie, whatever, but the end was all sweet and love story-ish, and gosh, don’t you just know that those two horses were going to end up married in a subdivision somewhere with 2.5 kids and a minivan? (No, dummy, they’re WILD, that’s the whole point of the movie!)  OK, point taken, but the lovey doveyness of it all forced me to open my big trap and say how stupid it was, because horses are NOT monogamists. (Also made me want to go re-read one of my favorite horse books of all time, Smoky the Cow Horse)  With horses that are not animated in a movie that anthropomorphises them beyond any normal person’s sense of what is decent in the world, the stallion has his harem, and he breeds with all of the mares as many times as he can, and when the colts get old enough to threaten his authority, he chases them away.  They roam the wild until they find another herd with an old stallion they can beat up and chase away, and they take over his harem. (Wait! Maybe that’s why Sierra the whore horse looks like such a tramp! She’s trying to get into the cool harem!)  Unless they can win against their father, which they usually cannot, they are exiled from the herd.  Which made me think of those fundamentalist sects of Mormonism living out in the wilds of New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, and Utah, who exile the boys so they can keep the pretty young girls for the creepy old men.  Which made me wonder, when does the new season of Big Love start?  Answer: January 18.  YAY!  God, I love that show.  Between that, Battlestar Galactica (January 16), and LOST (January 21st), it looks like the book reading is going to go way down around here.

Last but not least, I heard about this nifty invention on Wait Wait, Don’t Tell Me, and I had to share it with you.  For your enjoyment, the Speedfit Mobil Treadmill:

YOU DIDN’T SAY ONE GOOD THING ABOUT SPIRIT! EXCEPT THAT IT WAS CUTE, WHICH DOESN’T COUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    You should RESIGN YOUR BLOG.

    How DARE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hehe.

    🙂

  • Michelle at Scribbit

I clicked through from my feeds solely because of the waffles–that caramel stuff had me drooling–and then I notice the Struts 🙂 Horrific isn’t it? I saw them called “whorses” but couldn’t quite bring myself to write it in the post though it cracked me up.

  • patois

Too much to comment on. I’ll stick to the cake: I can visualize my daughter trying to take it to bed and getting icing and the like all over it.

  • Nance

I’m still not over the facts that:

    1. Maya yelled at you on your blog in front of everyone
    2. Autumn’s Mom stole my signature “Holy crap”
    3. Michelle mentioned “whoreses” which was what I was going to call them
    4. You are going to save the waffle mix for people you don’t like
    5. Creepy Mormon sects practicing polygamy led you to then ask about Big Love, which all originated from a discussion about Smoky the Cow Horse…!?

  • J

    Nance,

    1. I KNOW!

    5. Actually, the conversation started with Spirit, not Smoky, but my mind went to Smoky while watching the movie. Mostly because it’s about 1,000 times better of a story.

A toy pony. In a tutu. Wearing earrings (Please tell me that’s not actually a tiara). With a purse (carried how, exactly?). And high heels. High Heels.

Where exactly is the boy pony? You know, the one with the big cowboy hat and a belt buckle? Wearing jeans, perhaps with chaps?

No wonder kids these days have absolutely no clue about the environment.

  • J

ShortWoman, I think those are big slutty hoops she has on, to match her lovely bangles at her ‘wrist’.

The high heels were what got me the most, too.

  • Karen MEG

    LOVE IT!!!

Now I’ve seen everything… that treadmill is hilarious!
    And a Whore Horse?

Perfect randomness for a Friday 🙂

Oh, and BTW, just for the record, I ALSO wear corrective shoes, just when I was about 4 LOL!

  • ~sis~

lol @ the hussy horse….i just don’t even wanna go there.
and what is with everyone and williams sonoma, i guess i need to get out more….or travel FAR! 😉
but mostly i’m here to comment on HURRAY for BSG and LOST returning…and missing Big Love!

  • ybonesy

I’ve been meaning to get over here to comment for a week now, but travel and poor internet connections have kept me from doing so (although I’m still in a hotel but finally with time and a GREAT connection). I love Spirit. I still well up when I watch it, and I’ve been watching it for years.

Also, the waffles look yummy. I’m craving something like that for breakfast. Suddenly I feel like I’ve eaten too much salt.

I wouldn’t buy wine from Borders either, and actually, I stopped buying books from there and have gone back to the one independent that I fear might go out of business if I don’t join the few others and buy from there.

Lots of good stuff in the post. Wish I could stay longer.

Wow! I LOVE all the randomness! BTW, I’m going to have to send you some of our homemade maple syrup…umm…as soon as I get back home to the Island. I didn’t realize that I haven’t been in my home since Oct. 16th! Bed rest during pregnancy began on that day! *sigh*

I tried to get Hubby to send off some stuff for you guys, but I think he’s been pretty preoccupied since I was sent to the hospital. I will return home soon…with the baby. I wonder if I’ll get more blog time in then or even less? LOL!

Oh, how I’ve missed your blog soooo much, J! Thank you so much for all your support, encouragement, and wisdom. I simply adore you! XOXO

    Mmmmm… pumpkin waffles…pecans…maple syrup…drool…

My Mom had a creepy panda bear pan. She would dress him up in different outfits depending on the occassion. She was a little odd… my favorite was when he wore a pink tutu for my neices b-day party 😉

So there will be more Battlestar Galactica? I wasn’t sure on that. Some friends told me last season was it, but I thought it was too popular for them to quit yet.

I laughed a good bit at this part, “Now, I have my yummy pumpkin waffles to look forward to, and some caramel apple mix in case someone I don’t really like that much comes over to spend the night, and wants to be fed in the morning.”

and clicked on the pinata video. That little girl’s mode of expression is funny, but the video is heart-breaking, really. She considered that dog a friend, and it seemed kinda sad to watch that with a laugh-track while other little kids smashed the hell out of something she loved.

That little kid had so much humanity. The world will probly hurt her.

(but, lol kids are still pragmatic. Even torn up and howling, she was sensible enough to get a bag and collect some of the candy.)

Amurin, your friends were right in a way…season 4 is the final season of BSG, but the writers’ strike cut it in half, so the first half of the season was last year, and the second half will be this year. 🙂 And actually, when they filmed the last episode that showed in the spring, they weren’t sure if they were going to be able to come back and complete the season, so it was all up in the air at that point.

Yeah, the pinata video was sad. And that’s how Maya felt when they beat up a pinata while she was little.

That was utterly demented. I loved it to bits, especially when you got off waffles and on to horses in pole dancing heels (I saw an article in the style section of a perfectly respectable woman’s magazine in the doctor’s. That’s how I know what a pole dancing heel is. Okay? And you knew that all men read the women’s mags in doctor’s waiting rooms, right?) Anyway, Battle Star Galactica – we’re waiting till the DVDs come for both hlaves of the last season – I can’t handle the possibility of a DVR screw-up.
