Proust Questionnaire…

Who knew that Proust was into memes? Not me. I guess that’s because I don’t read Vanity Fair, where they have the famous Proust Questionnaire, in every issue, answered by a different famous person. I came across it over at Buffy’s blog. I copied a few of her answers, because they applied to me as well.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
Ted and Maya murdered and their bodies thrown into a mass grave. (Sorry, I’m reading a book about people escaping death camps in WWII right now…)

Where would you like to live?
San Francisco, but with parking, a washer and drier, and good (and free) schools.

What is your idea of earthly happiness?
People who love me, whom I love. Books that I enjoy to read. Warm afternoons and cool evenings. Good health, and enough money to enjoy all of the above. Also, a good meal. 😉

To what faults do you feel most indulgent?
Idleness.

Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?
Atticus Finch; Henry the 5th (Yes, I know he was historical, but not sure how the history stacks up to the fiction); The Dread Pirate Roberts; Tom Joad; Aslan; Bilbo Baggins.

Who are your favorite characters in history?
Harriet Tubman; Thomas Jefferson; Aristotle; Joan of Arc…gosh, there are many others…Karen Silkwood maybe, and the guy who stood up to the tanks in Tienanmen Square back in 1989.

Who are your favorite heroines in real life?
The many women in my family…my mom, my grandma, her mother, her mother, her mother, and many, many others who stare adversity in the eye and survive, and still have enough strength and love for friends and family.

Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer; Meg Murry; Scarlet O’Hara; Morgaine from Mists of Avalon.

Your favorite painter?
Can’t answer. Too many. Some are Chagall, Degas, and Picasso.

Your favorite musician?
Again, too many. I love the Beatles, Dire Straits, David Bowie, and many others.

The quality you most admire in a man?
To quote Proust when he took this test: Intelligence and moral sense.

The quality you most admire in a woman?
The same, Intelligence and moral sense.

Your favorite virtue?
Kindness.

Your favorite occupation?
I’ll let you know when I figure it out. I think it would be cool to have a pony farm next to a library, though.

Who would you have liked to be?
Maybe a literate pony farmer? The people I admire the most have all had pretty hard lives, so I don’t know that I want to be one of them. I’m lazy that way. Hence the idleness thing.

I was a little worried from the title of your post that you’d got all high-brow on us. 🙂 Actually that is a very thoughtful meme. I’m with Py, these questions could take a very long time to answer.

How alike are we, then. 🙂
Tubman was amazing wasn’t she. Hey, and let’s not forget Buffy. 🙂 Joss Whedon single handedly made me stop hating my name. And I’d have to add Bowie to the musician list as well…and Freddie Mercury.

I love the “pony farm next to the library”. That is so cool!
I would like to have a minature pony or donkey farm next to anything!

I’ll admit the Dread Pirate Roberts came as a bit of a surprise.

Thanks for your comment. Short version – I have to decide whether I can or should continue to care for both the girls and a sick husband.

I was having a hard time on the home computer with loading your blog and then trying to make a comment. At work I have no problem. I just want to say I copy-rated you on this meme. hehehehe. Library with a little pony ride business on the side would bring in some good money and a lot of crying kids when they had to leave. You would have to put in a Kleenex vending machine by the exit sign.

Atticus Finch is my hands-down favorite as well.

    I like this post.

And this may sound…..trite(?), but I think it takes courage to answer that first question so honestly. I think many of us may think that, but few would have the honesty to say it.
