How Do You Feel About This?

I’m sure that by now anyone who cares knows that there’s a Sex and the City film in the works…that the salary negotiations for Kim Catrall were finally worked out, the script long finished, schedules cleared, and the film is currently in production.  This knowledge pulls me two different ways.  1st off, YAY!  I love the girls, I love the relationship between the four of them, I love their friendship, the writing, the stupid situations they get themselves into, etc.

However…I kind of liked how the series was tied up into a pretty little bow.  They were all happy.  Charlotte had Harry, and had her baby on the way.  Miranda and Steve were married and doing well.  Samantha had finally settled down with Smith and let him into her heart.  And Mr. Big had finally come around and realized that happiness could be found in the arms of Carrie.  Their careers, a feminist might ask?  That particular feminist never watched the show, then, because their careers were always just fine, never needed much story time…the story is the 4 girls, their men, and their relationships with each other.  How they are there for each other, how they are the backbones for each other.  How their love for each other triumphs over all.

So, now that they’re all actually happy…where can the story go?  How can we have an interesting film?  Oh, I know…take away that boring security.  Damn it.  THAT’S what I’m not thrilled about.  To have an interesting plot, we need to throw some flies in the ointment here, and make them at least a little bit miserable.  To those of us who loved these characters, and wanted more than anything for them to be happy, that’s gonna suck, at least a little.

Not having cable, I missed out on the entire SATC phenomenon. So, I could take the movie, or leave it although I know what you are saying.

I think you’re right about needing conflict to keep the drama going. You can’t really have a 2 hour movie about people being happy and satisfied all the time ’cause that would be boring.

I saw this show via netflix and in chopped up reruns. I can see why you’re not so happy about them ruining a happy ending. Can’t leave well enough alone, I guess.

Gina, we don’t have HBO either. We got hooked via the DVDs, first at our local video store, then via Netflix. That’s how we watch Big Love, Six Feet Under, Dead Like Me…all of the shows on the channels we’re too cheap to pay for. 😉

I wasn’t a crazy SATC fan. I saw a few and they were funny. Totally not interested in a movie. Especially when it seems to be only being done for money. Which in general I know why people make films…

I’m also not interested in seeing a movie of this show. I loved the show and watched it faithfully, but you are right J-, it was all wrapped up by the finale. I don’t want to see any of that torn apart. Seems like a money grab, to me.

J- I agree with you. Why screw up an entirely good thing. I’d rather live with the memories that led up to their bliss.

That is true, I wonder what is going to happen to make the movie interesting. May be Big will wonder off again, and Carrie finds the ultimate shoes. How about Charlotte becomes a Good Will Ambassador like Angelina Jolie, and Miranda gets pregnant again and Steve’s Moms’ dementia is driving her nuts. Samatha dumps Smith for a younger guy, and they go to a fabulous restaurant and eat wonderful food wearing only the cutest of clothes and shoes. I don’t know some times I let my imagination go loco..

I feel it’s been too long for the movie now. Sure I might have been more interested before, but now it seems forced. I agree with you that they finished off the series perfectly, and in order to have a plot for a movie, they’ll have been F is up for some of them, if not all. There’s no way it’ll just be this sweet little narrative about how hunky dory things have been.

I’m curious if they will start a few years later, or right after the series has ended….yes, I’ll watch the movie, but I’m not gonna like it!

I don’t have any interest in watching it. I use to watch X-Files. They did the same thing – make a movie. I didn’t go see it either.

    I DON’T WANT IT!

I feel like a toddler throwing a fit, but I really don’t want this damn movie. There is no need for it. I loved the wrap up of the series. Done. End of story. I simply cannot imagine how they could EVER make a good movie out of the series at this point.

    I want to cry.

I wish they would leave well enough alone! I loved the series and I firmly believe a movie would ruin things.

Movies for great shows like this usually are atrocious, but I can’t deny that I’m curious. I really liked the way they wound things up too, so it is a shame that they would mess with it. I hope the storyline is better than I suspect it might be.

I only started watching this in reruns and unfortunately they jump around quite a bit (several stations run them). I like the later episodes later but there is still a lot I’ve missed understanding. (I just the other day saw the episodes where Charlotte marries Trey). I know I should probably watch the series on DVD but there were a lot of them, afterall. Maybe I’ll get that final season and watch it before the movie comes out.
