Thanksgiving Week

Today is shopping day for Thanksgiving week.  I need to get:

  • dinner for tonight (whatever that turns out to be)
  • ingredients for latkes, homemade applesauce, and chicken for Hanukkah on Wednesday
  • ingredients for apple cake, cranberry sauce*, fruit salad, and yams for Thanksgiving

I generally tend to go to the grocery store every day, or at least every day.  So planning on going to the store for enough food to cover 3 entire days is kind of crazy.  My goal, of course, is to avoid the insanity of shopping either the day before Thanksgiving, or, God forbid, actually shopping on Thanksgiving.

I predict this shopping will bring me to two grocery stores (at least), and the farmers’ market.  Meat I like to get at one store, a lot of other less expensive things at another store, and then apples and other timely produce at the farmers’ market.

I love Thanksgiving.  It’s a great holiday, and this year, my parents are coming to visit from Oregon.  Should be lovely indeed.

*I tried a new cranberry sauce recipe last year, which was very close to my regular (cranberries, sugar, water), but it added a pinch of salt.  The flavor was good, but it didn’t set very well.  So this year I’m going back to the tried and true, saltless version.

I’m back home from my extended vacation in Gettysburg, so today is my Thanksgiving shopping day as well. I’m trying to gird my loins, so to speak, and prepare for the Madhouse that the grocery store will be. Ugh. Tomorrow, I’ll have all day for leisurely prep. I’m not going to make anything new, and I will probably make the usual two pumpkin pies, sending half a pie and a tub of Cool Whip home with each of the boys. I’m not a fan.

I went to the grocery this morning and it was not crowded at all! I’m still reeling from the shock. I’m in charge of salad for 25 for our Thanksgiving get-together. Before today I’ve never in my life bought so much lettuce + fresh vegetables at one time. Rather fun to do.

    Have a happy Thanksgiving, J.
