This Week I….

once again, for the umpteenth time, gave up soft drinks.  I’m coming to accept that I have a problem (1st step), and I cannot just have 1 a day.  I’ve tried so many times to cut back to one a day, trying the idea of moderation, but somehow, it just doesn’t work.  I keep reading about how horrid soft drinks are, with all of their chemicals and so on.  The soda I drink happens to be diet, which brings its own set of medical challenges.  So I decided that I don’t want to drink them anymore.  Rats.  I happen to LIKE soda, diet and regular, so it sucks that I should need to quit them.  I mean, I don’t smoke, I exercise, I eat a fairly healthy diet.   Can’t I have SOMETHING?  The answer seems to be, yes, perhaps, but not this.  So I have to find something else.

I didn’t really want to give up caffeine at the same time, but coffee wreaks havoc upon my stomach, and I cannot seem to make myself enjoy tea.  So I just quit.  I did have headaches for a few days, but they felt like sinus headaches, which I have with caffeine as well, so who knows.  It’s Sunday now, and Tuesday was my first day without.  Me no likey.   Why?  Why do we have to give up things that I like?  Sigh.  I’m hoping I’ll get to a day when I don’t look longingly at the soda aisle whilst going through the grocery store.  Perhaps I never will.  Ted suggests that I might join a 12 step program and have support going through my troubles.  How long do you think I would need to attend meetings?  6 months?  A year?  The REST OF MY STUPID LIFE???

Rats.

I don’t even keep them in the house. Truly. Soft drinks are SO not my issue. It’s salty stuff. Nuts, popcorn, kosher dill pickles and even chips, if they are in the house. I need help for sure.

Well, for me, the soda goes SO WELL with the salty stuff. So if I don’t have the soda, I’m not so interested in chips and so on.

I had to give up soda Cold Turkey. I take Topamax for migraine prevention. Anything carbonated with CO2–anything–foams up horribly in my mouth and tastes terribly metallic. It’s a side effect. So I haven’t had a drink of soda since 2003. There are days that I yearn for an icy root beer or a cold Dr. Pepper. I don’t crave colas. I seem to want the unusual flavors of those two particular things. Now, all I drink is water. Just water. I can’t really taste tea; another side effect, I guess. I do drink coffee in the morning, but I could never drink it cold, as in iced coffee. Ugh. And I have to avoid all those fake sweeteners. It’s not too big of a deal, really. It’s not like I had to give up pasta or beef. Or wine or vodka. (Although those come with their own set of migraine issues.)

I’ve mostly been OK, though last night I dreamed that I cheated and had a coke. Wow, it was good, as only an illicit thing can be. Your medication sounds horrid, though not as bad as a migraine, as I’ve had a few of those and they SUCK.
