On the First Day of Christmas…

12 Days of Christmas

(image found here)

A Facebook friend posted this morning, “Happy First Day of Christmas”, which confused me, because I thought Christmas Day was the first day of Christmas, with Epiphany being the 12th day, and the day that the magi came bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.  But what do I know, I’m an atheist.

Thanks to the internet, all I had to do was search for ‘1st day of Christmas’, and I found this very informative page, which both agreed with what my Facebook friend said, and what I had said as well.  In other words, different traditions and churches celebrate it on different dates.  I don’t know about you, but I always enjoy learning about how different cultures celebrate similar holidays.  Like St. Nicholas Day on December 6th, or 12th night on January 5th.  Very interesting to me.  The article also went on to say that some use the song, “The 12 Days of Christmas”, as a way to remember basic teachings of the Christian faith.  In this view, the ‘True Love” is God, “Me” is all baptized people of the Christian faith, and each of the 12 gifts is a central tenant.  I’ll copy and paste, because I think it’s interesting, and you might not click over.  Full credit to Dennis Bratcher at The Voice website.

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me…

Day 1, Christmas Day, December 25
A Partridge in a Pear Tree
The partridge in a pear tree is Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, whose birthday we celebrate on December 25, the first day of Christmas. In the song, Christ is symbolically presented as a mother partridge that feigns injury to decoy predators from her helpless nestlings, recalling the expression of Christ’s sadness over the fate of Jerusalem: “Jerusalem! Jerusalem! How often would I have sheltered you under my wings, as a hen does her chicks, but you would not have it so . . . .” (Luke 13:34)

Day 2, December 26

The first Five Books of the Old Testament, known as the Torah or the Pentateuch:  1) Genesis, 2) Exodus, 3) Leviticus, 4) Numbers, and 5) Deuteronomy, which gives the history of humanity’s sinful failure and God’s response of grace in the creation of a people to be a light to the world.

I had no idea! I love this. 🙂 I also love celebrating a season of Christmas, and not just one day, so hearing about a real 12 days of christmas, or something like that, is nice. I’ll have to look more into it. Thanks!

Hmmmmmm….they didn’t teach me this in Sunday school?????
I probably wasn’t listening anyway. I was baptised twice and it didn’t take?
Rather funny learning this from an atheist. I’m leaning towards agnostic!
But I still like to wish you and everyone a Merry Christmas no matter what the deeper meaning!

    WM, I know, it’s interesting!

Jimmy, I like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, too! Never baptized myself, and don’t believe in any higher power, but still it’s the religious Christmas songs that I like best. I guess there’s just no getting around it…”Jesus is the reason for the season”, even if the Church did co-opt traditions from pagans and so on. 😉

Thanks for posting this, Jules! My pastor mentioned in his Christmas Eve sermon that this song was written as a catechism, so it was really fun to learn it here! 🙂

I love celebrating the 12 days of Christmas, which is why I keep my decorations up through Jan. 6th! Of course, in truth, Jesus was likely a toddler once the Magi arrived, but it’s fun to remember and celebrate Christmas and the arrival of the Magi once a year this way!

Love to you and your family and Happy 2nd Day of Christmas! (Since I’m reading this post a day late!)

With working with a team in the Ukraine, I learned about the their traditions as well. They celebrate Christmas on Jan 7th. So we get next week off, and they have the week off after that (they have A LOT of holidays in January so they don’t work much that month).

I live in my own little US bubble and had no idea there were other possibly different Christmas celebrations.
