Friday Randomness

Nothing earth shattering today, k? As if there were anything earth shattering around here lately anyway. Sigh.

OK, first, I could have done without the stupid helicopters hovering around in the stupid sky this morning, waking me up a whole hour before I needed to get up. Grrr.

Second, I kinda want to make some chili dogs for an upcoming girl scout pool party at our house, but I’m not sure if I’ll make the chili from scratch, or go buy some. What I’m looking for is an all beef chili, kind of like what you might find at Pink’s in Los Angeles. Anyone have a good recipe?

Facebook is killing blogging, isn’t it? I keep up with so many more people there. And you. You people don’t call, you don’t write, you don’t comment. OK, a few people do. Maybe that’s all the people who read nowadays, I don’t know. I gave up on Sitemeter.

I may give up on Kim soon. I’m just not getting into it, and the time it ticking by.

I ordered some Gilad – Ultimate Body Sculpt dvds the other day. I sometimes work out to his show in the mornings, but at 1/2 hour minus commercials, it’s not enough. Time to step it up a bit. Hope they’re good.

What about John Hughes dying? That’s pretty surprising. While having a heart attack in Manhattan doesn’t sound fun by any stretch of the imagination, at least it doesn’t sound like he suffered a long illness or anything crappy like that.

I’m looking forward to seeing Julie and Julia. Maybe this weekend.

While there are parts of working that I like (paycheck), it’s putting a definite cramp in my style. I need to get my hair done, and now I have to wait for the weekend to get it done. Dang.

We’re enjoying watching the last episodes of Battlestar Galactica on DVD, waiting for the new season of Mad Men to start on the 16th. Thirtysomething is coming out on DVD too…I’m gonna Netflix it, and see if I still like it.

I’ve been spending time thinking about pie lately. Not a lot of time, but some. Last weekend, I stopped at the Farmers’ Market, and I was wondering if they had a marrionberry pie. They didn’t, but they had an olallieberry and marrionberry pie. I was afraid to try it, because I’ve never tried the o berry. But I’ve been told since then that they rock. So…to try to the Farmers’ Market pie, or schlep myself over to Whole Foods in search of a marrionberry pie, because I know they have them, and they’re very good. What would you do?

Tomorrow is my horseback riding lesson. I’m making a bit of progress, I like it, but I wish there were a way I could practice all week at home. Most sports or things you learn, you can practice. But the lack of a horse gets in my way. Maybe I’ll stop at the Farmers’ Market that’s near the lessons for that pie on the way home, huh? Then go get my hair done?

Took Gen to the ophthalmologist on Monday. Still blind. The question is, is it Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome, in which case, we just need to get used to her being blind. Or, is it something systemic that’s causing it, in which case, we need to track it down before it causes damage to some other part of her. The ophthalmologist (and yes, that’s a hard word for me to spell) didn’t know. Ran a couple of blood tests, which seem to be negative (one negative, one we haven’t heard from yet), but he said that Cushing’s doesn’t cause blindness (?), and while she may have it, that’s not the problem. He wants to run a test to see if her retina work, but she would have to go under for that test, and I’m not sure that I want to put her through that, or our pocketbooks either for that matter. I wish we had some definite answer instead of all of this wondering and expensive testing, and in the meantime, she’s starting to adjust, though still bumping into things. Sigh.

Anyway. I hope you’re well. Looking forward to a nice weekend and enjoying the summer. What’s new in your life?

I don’t do Facebook, so I’m still here. But I know what you’re talking about. Facebook, Twitter, etc….all of those are such teeny tiny hits. I think my blog–and others’–are going the way of newspapers. Longer, more thoughtful posts–even humorous ones, are too much for people anymore. It’s too bad. I don’t use my blog, though, as a way to keep up with friends. That’s what I use email for.

Firstly, toss Kim out! haha If you are not enjoying it, then what is the point? I still like reading blogs. I just don’t enjoy writing them anymore. I’ve become more of a reader than a writer. I don’t really want anyone seeing the dark corners of my mind at this time 😉 I enjoy FB, it’s a distraction. I got in touch with someone I was friends with in 5th grade yesterday. Although, she couldn’t quite place me, I still remember some fun memories of her.

I wish I could take a day and go get my hair done, see a movie and go to a Farmer’s Market. Sadly, none of the above are on my horizon for this weekend. Sigh Give Gen a kissy for me. Poor darling…she’ll figure it out and memorize your house. Just don’t move anything! Hugs

Ha, I knew Facebook was going to kill blogging! For the record, I eschew Facebook and I enjoy your blog. I considered not seeing J&J purely for the lobster-murder scene (as described in reviews; could there be any way no lobsters were actually harmed?), but have added it to my Netflix list. Wishing the best for Genevieve. Yes, that word (I won’t try it) is hard to spell!

I’ve noticed a decrease in readers and certainly, a decrease in comments in the last half year or so. Maybe it is Facebook and Twitter, maybe we are all just going through a “phase”. Who knows. I still enjoy reading blogs, especially of the storytelling types. Do you think we all just have to redefine why we blog and what we blog?

I remember Doris Lessing once said something about being old enough to give herself permission to not finish a book she didn’t like. Or something like that.
Decreases in readers…I think it’s also part of a natural fluctuation in communities. I wonder whether, as you become more established as a blogger, you kind of settle down with a core readership (unless you’re approaching it as a kind of business in which case you’re constantly in a state of outreach) and that the initial core one gathers tends to shrink rather than grow.

Thanks for continuing to keep up with your blog! I love coming by and reading although I tend not to comment. I think that you are right, facebook does impact blogging. I too am on fb and find that I get ‘sucked’ in and spend too much time on the site and by the time I’m done there I am not always inspired to write on my own blog. I guess it is a phase as someone else commented.

I’ll be looking forward to hearing more about your riding lessons and progress with Kim as well as Gen.

    Be well!

    Peace.

    Hello,

I’ve just been reading random blogs, trying to cheer myself up, and I found yours. I really like it and so thought I’d leave a comment.

I love writing mine and getting comments always makes me feel appreciated but actually the therapy of writing it all out is the main driver for me.

Anyway, I love the way you write and will be back for more.

    Take care,

    Selina

Thought I better comment so you keep blogging. Don’t know why I haven’t before we are nearly related…half-step-sisters….or something. Pats to Gen!

J, I have a hellacious chili recipe, but it is labor-intensive. It calls for quite a variety of spices, takes an afternoon, but freezes well and is food for days and days. Shoot me a msg and we can coordinate–it’ll take a while to transcribe, if interested.

Also, my folks saw Julie & Julia and liked it very much. We’ll probably Netflix it.
